There is a proposal on the table from HRM Traffic to eliminate the 4 lanes of traffic on Herring Cove Road and go to 2 lanes but add bike lanes… I’d like to know who comes up with this shit… HRM Traffic claims that it will not affect traffic flow.
They must have a lot of rocket scientists working there who don’t drive cars, they must drive bikes only. The real question here is “how does shit like this even get to the table”? —Badger One

Dear god, can’t they just pave the shoulders? I think you only need 5 or 6 feet for a bike lane… not a whole car lane!
That’s awesome. After moving out that way I sent my councilor asking for bike lanes on as much of the Old Sambro Road stretch as possible. This is going to be sweet. I just wish people weren’t able to park in them.
I would like to put forward a motion to build a wall and blockade around all of Spryfield. Will someone second that…
I’ll second that. It would end up resembling a war zone, not unlike Kowloon.
GOOD! I’m glad the city is actually listening to a large percentage of the population who chooses not to sit on their fat asses guzzling non-renewable resources in their single-person exhaust-mobiles!
On top of that, there are a ton of cyclists in the Herring Cove area who are nearly killed each day by impatient and selfish individuals on the already over-congested Halifax roads.
YAY BIKE WEEK!
and then the locals will start bitching and whining about too much traffic and not enough lanes to handle it.let’s take a vote here and now. how many people in this city, ride or use any type of bike daily, or even weekly? now how about cars, trucks, vans, semis, get the fucking picture peter kelly.
Wait a minute – while I’m all for bike lanes, I think Hali10 you made a point: “impatient and selfish individuals on the already over-congested Halifax roads.” If the roads are congested now, taking 2 lanes won’t make them less congested! Unfortunately you would have bike lanes used by a small percentage of people and even more “impatient and selfish” drivers. I’m sorry, but sometimes the reality is people need to drive. Bike lanes are cool – but not to sacrifice 2 lanes of traffic. Widening roads would be the way to go in this instance.
I bike the Herring Cove Road every day, and drive it probably a couple times a week (but never during ‘rush’ hour) and don’t notice any congestion or back ups. Sometimes in the morning the traffic will be backed up past cowie hill a bit but it seems to be moving pretty good. It helped a lot when they got ride of the traffic light across from Chocolate Lake (proving that the traffic people aren’t completely stoopid).
To sum up: there isn’t enough traffic on Herring Cove road to necessitate 4 lanes. Get ride of a few and drop a bike lane on that sucker.
Where we really need one is between the Rotary to as far as Gaudet Optical on Quinpool, but thats another bitch.
What would be a good compromise is what they did with the widened area of Chebucto. Three lanes of traffic governed by lights (two lanes inbound during the morning rush, two lanes outbound for the rest of the day) and sacrifice a lane to add two sizable bike lanes on either side. Best of both worlds.
Shhhhh! OP!! You are not allowed to criticize bile lanes in this town. That way Kouncil can continue to kowtow to politically-correct special interest groups and give the 6 people who actually are loony enough to bike to work their own dedicated lanes while 99.9% of people sit in a gridlocked lineup.
I agree with Fever man, that sounds like a good idea. Reversible lanes are sexy! Hey, why not make one of them a dedicated bus lane?
After seeing it on the CBC news tonight I did some research. This idea was first proposed in 2005, so um, take an interest in your surroundings. I found it funny that businesses are against it. Other than the Sobeys and NSLC I didn’t know there were any businesses in Spryfield, I’d rather just ride/drive through to get to the real city.
