Haligonians can’t get to work. Flights are in question. Ontario loses another 700 manufacturing jobs (the new have-not prov). Athens is burning. My semester might be invalid? Get over yourselves.
I’m willing to put up with traffic, I’ll (sadly) forgo my plans to meet my family in the tropics (but really… plleeaasee Air Canada), we’ll pay the extra taxes in Ontario for retraining and EI to those factory workers (not much choice there)… but if the university goes on strike that’ll send a pretty clear message to us students. You don’t give a shit about us. We already pay the highest fucking tuition, and we put up with underdog Uni status for your charm… but if this strike goes through I’ll have you know that my transfer app to three other Unis are pending.
This will sound arrogant but I don’t give a shit. I’m one of those Ontario kids that doesn’t take scholarship money and does his part to support the Halifax economy (not just downtown, but rent ain’t cheap either… as one example). Just one of three kids that my parents sent out here and we might be in a position to make contributions to Dal in the future… if you think that wasting a year of my life (co op) is going to keep me in your favour then you’re crazy. I can forget about this place and your “Bold Ambitions” in a heart beat.
Now, I realize that the province is stretched thin and I don’t harbour any of these notions about education being a ‘right’… but I think we’ve paid a fair price financially and in terms of effort (I’m a good student), to stiff us now would be pretty freaking selfish.
Anyway, I’m kind of slow burning over this one but just think when you’re voting about the faces that you won’t be seeing in September if you choose to put yourselves first. Hopefully you’ll see what’s better for you, us and our beloved institution. —I Love Midterms

“I Love Midterms” Oh EWWWW.
ooo, big talk…
I bet I’ll still see ya partying when classes are stopped.
newsflash… as you surmise, they don’t give a shit about you.
The fact that Dal’s tuition has surpassed Acadia’s is ridiculous.
Dal tuition for arts and social sciences is 6845, while acadia’s (including the tech fee and the athletic and health services fee — which is complete bullshit because doesn’t MSI cover health services? sounds kinda sketchy there) is 6384.
HOWEVER that price doesn’t include the cost of the laptop you are required to purchase when you start, and possibly replace later on if you buy a shitty PC.
sung t the tune of, “oh macronald’s charm”.
You dummies are still buying into that university crap. It’s like a drug dealer. You get a little free or cheap and then the price rises! It used to be the hight school education was all you neded. Then the universities stepped in. Next it was a bachelor’s degree. Now is a Master’s degree that opens the doors. And what happened? The cost rose. And rose. AND YOU STILL PAY! ummmmm…
Anyone who doesn’t take advanage of a scholarship has rocks in their heads. Why wouldn’t you do something that would lessen your financial responsibility?
Look at it this way, you (and the rest of the students) don’t have worry about how you’re getting to school during the MT strike.
I thought they got rid of the laptops at acadia…
though this page is pretty cryptic.
http://www.acadiau.ca/advantage/
still, not adding the cost of a laptop to tuition should definitely bring it down below Dal.
I’d still go to acadia though… such small class sizes were WAY better.
Fingers crossed for You OP!!
You have to buy an ‘approved’ laptop. They have a series of them you can buy through them that have the appropriate specs. They even included apple in there! 🙂
Basically, you still shell out for the laptop, but instead of handing it back when you graduate, you get to keep it — none of this “you can buy it at a special grad rate of $800 and oh hay because we’re awesome, here’s a free copy of office 2003!” bullshit.
