What is the deal with people driving their ATV’s on the roads and highways?! Where are the police? I live inTerrence Bay , what a nice spot except for the the hicks that have to make more noise than a freight train speeding up and down the road. Then there are our neighbors (nice folks) but they have dogs penned up in the back near our house that are NEVER walked. Of course they howl away all day and night. I would too! Wouldn’t you? What is the deal? Why can’t the country life be peaceful? Do you have to have constant noise to prove that you are alive?!! So fed up with folks that can’t just be calm and enjoy the serenity. Anyway. It’s still pretty out here just the same.

i am a biker, and i do not make people’s life hell. in all areas you will find assholes. best thing to do, is get a bike yourself, all legal, and tear around their place for awhile. but keep in mind the buddy that got shot the other day. the cops are too busy, fighting real crime, like ticketing people for smoking in their own semi, or on the lookout for people dumping the truckloads of butts on beaches. where little johnny and janie eat them for dindin.or you could just get a thicker skin, and say fuck it all, and not let it show that you are bothered.
Let me guess, new to the area, a former city dweller that moved to the country to find isolation and complete silence and serenity. I’m guessing that these people are transiting from one trail to the next, and are in no way intending on pissing you off. Some people like to take a ride in the woods to relax, each to their own. Sounds like life is good, and you’re sweating the details. Volunteer to take your neighbors dogs for a walk if you’re that concerned with their health and welfare. If you want calm and serenity, put some headphones on and some boring ass classical music. If you want peaceful, buy an isolated island, that’s the only guarantee you’ll be totally alone, unless you wanna bitch about the jets flying overhead.
Life sucks is a biker? I never saw that one coming. Don’t tell me, let me guess, it’s a fat ass harley with sawed off pipes and a deck of playing cards clothespinned to the spokes. What a fucking loser…
I kind of agree with Bullet – just because you live in the country doesn’t mean you get to expect quiet, at least, not as long as you’re living near other people. As long as you’re living near other people you’ll need to go a bit further and find places that are genuinely quiet, and settle for visiting them. Not everyone is in the country for “peace and quiet,” some people are just there because that’s where they live.
Bullet: I was born and raised in Terence Bay, am not the OP, but I can attest to what he/she was bitching about. The ATVs are NOT transitting from one trail to another, they are people aged 10-30 tearing up and down the road at top speed with no regard for those walking, biking, or driving on the same road. They race each other up and down the road. They are loud and often have no regard for the time of day. They are NOT safe and they know how disruptive they are. Several from the area have suffered severe injury or loss of life because they do not drive reasonably.
As for the dogs, there is a lot of “hunting dog” mentality in the area, with Nova Scotia Rabbit Dogs being kept in smelly pens, rarely to recieve human affection or even a warm shelter when needed. They figure because the dog has a utility they can be kept in pens round the clock. There are, however a lot of responsible dog owners in the area.
There are many redeeming features in Terence Bay – beautiful scenery, the ability to be completely alone within a five minute walk of your house, and a lot of AMAZING and generous people. But, like any place there are downsides – vandalism, ATV/dirt bikes monopolizing the roads, etc etc.
The OP is not exaggerating…I left when I was 18 and I could never move back.
I don’t get it, it’s an amazing place to live but you can never move back? I doubt the ATV’s are monopolizing the roads. Funny how straight piped Harley’s never get the same complaints, nor do cars with a loud exhaust pipe. Some people are just uptight about these things, I guess they forget the antics they pulled when they were kids. Now we want them to all disappear and stay indoors so they don’t make any noise. God forbid if they want to have fun at something you may not approve of. Maybe we should just ban it like everything else in this province lately. We should all just stay in our homes, quiet as church mice and obey an early curfew. Sounds a bit like police state doesn’t it?
Bullet – come to the corner of Portland and Alderney and tell me at 2am that the excessively loud bikes coming the Dartmouth Harley Club aren’t waking up the neighbourhood. Of course the cops are no wheres to be found when the bikers stagger out of the place and onto their bikes.
I’d buy a gun
Two words that will help you ! So just go buy a set of ….
EAR PLUGS ! ! !
If they can keep the noise of a full on rock show from disturbing me, they’ll work wonders for an ATV going by outside . ………. . you welcome .
buy a gun, buy some ear plugs… what kind of solution is that? It’s NOT.
Call the dam cops. ATV’s are unauthorized on public highways. Simple.
I remember reading in a local paper of ‘new folk’ moving to Sambro and asking the locals to please not go out fishing at 4am because the loud diesel motors wakes them up. *sigh*
Exactly Cranky…I remember when I first moved to the country over 7 years ago now…wow time flies…& there was a piece in the local paper from people who had just built a new home complaining about the smell of a pig farm up the road ,that has been there for years !
Like I suggested about the ear plugs, unless the ATV’s are circling your home, they go by & its over. Put a set of plugs in & you’ll sleep right through it.
We’re out in the country & the rules for back side roads are somewhat more lax than in town. Seeing ATV’s going down the side of the roads is a normal daily thing. Others live out here & many like to ride ,so if the ATV’s bother you, try the plugs …but you just wait until the first day of hunting season…when I first moved out here, on the first day of hunting… I thought a war had started !
At first light…boom , boom ,boom, krapow, krapow, pop, pop, pop ,pop, boom, boom!
Now I’m often out there as well, sitting in a stand, waiting for a chance to put some fresh meat in the freezer. While i may be up in that stand alone…doesn’t mean I’m lonely 😉
nah floyd, nothing of the kind. it a kawasaki 600 4 wheeler. but yes, i used to own a 1969 harley fantail, thanks for asking.oh, and the little rice burners of today, they are pieces of shit. no guts and no roar. but my 4 wheeler is legal and quiet, hell you wouldn’t even know i was 10 feet behind you on a quiet day.i respect people and people’s property too.how about you? oh, and you might be the loser here, not me.
Bullet – I didn’t say it was an amazing place to live, I said it had redeeming qualities like beautiful scenery and some amazing nice people. Second, unless you’ve lived there, you don’t get to make your judgements about how bad it is or isn’t. ATVs flying by a dozen times in an hour at speeds well over the speed limit, etc. I’ve lived a couple of different places since and those straight piped harleys and cars with loud exhausts have never been so persistently a problem as the ATVs in Terence Bay. Calling the cops is useless because there is no police presence in the area, so by the time they arrive, the problem has disappeared for a while.
I’m not saying everyone with an ATV is irresponsible…there are plenty of people who use them safely. I don’t even care if they use the road to get from trail to trail at a safe speed. It’s just when they terrorize the neighbourhood that it’s a problem.
Driving an ATV up and down the road with no regard for the safety or peace of people around you is different than owning a farm (livelihood) that smells or starting a fishing boat engine and then leaving the wharf as far as disrupting neighbours goes. It is a recreational activity that is illegal, and unsafe.
Terence Bay a good place to live?!
I nearly spat out my coffee with that one…
I like what you are saying Bullet. If you want the pretentious lifestyle, move back to the city. Enjoy the country for what it is….hicks and all.
Those are uneducated rednecks out cruising for their cousins. They don’t know any better. Maybe had they passed Grade 4, they’d have more of a clue.
