DOES LOVE POSSESS A COGNITIVE CORE? A PROBLEM IN EPISTEMOLOGY
“You should have known you loved her before you involved me.” You were never kind
The bitcher assumes that love – its presence or its absence – is open to cognitive scrutiny. But is this true? Can one be in love and not know it? One may feel that one is in love but is that the same thing as knowing it?
One must suppose that to know something requires that the object known, in this case that one is in love, contains a cognitive component by virtue of which the claim that one is in love might gain intelligibility. This of course is a perrenial problem in epistemology, the philosophy of knowledge and the validity of knowledge claims. But what turns on the issue?
If the emotions do not have a cognitive core can the claim be made that man (or woman) is a rational animal, one for whom reasons are central? That being so, if man (or woman) is not a rational animal what hope can be held out for the evolution of the species, whether conceived in Darwinian or moral terms? It’s a problem, a problem in epistemology.

Welcome back, Mr. M. Amsterdam or Marrakech?
Thanks Ivan! Yes, it was my annual pilgrimage. it was raining when I arrived. And the moment I stepped out of the airport, the clouds parted and the sun shone bright and strong! I had lovely weather… the boys were happy to see that Daddy was back… and so were the retailers! And when I left, the skies darkened and the air cooled to a bitter chill. The boys wept at my feet. Sales people begged me to stay-just another day?!
And I had no Issues with the limo services I use… call Ivan at Atlantis Limo for the best service!
