Why is it illegal to poster on telephone poles in the HRM? (except for those collar things or those kiosks… of which there are maybe 10) I just posted at least 20 posters last night and they’re all gone by this morning. Its a fucking poster, not only is it ridiculous for these to be illegal, its also a direct violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. I read somewhere that the HRM spent 300,000 dollars in 2000 to enforce this law. They seriously couldn’t think of anything better to spend this money on? I also read somewhere that you can get a 215 dollar fine for being caught “illegally postering”. Has this city gone mad?

Does the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms also mention that I can hang ‘Honk if you love cookies.’ banners from traffic lights? …just asking.
…and how the hell do you ‘poster’ something?
Yes, though…the city should not be spending much on this unless staples have ever been shown to take down a utility pole.
The $300 000 was probably spent on staple removers.
And who actually reads these posters anyway? If you want your ad noticed, put it in The Coast!
Im all for these posters!
waiting at a bus stop it is a good way to spend your time while waiting.
well besides looking like shit having telephone poles plastered in every colour of the rainbow, these posters become trash when they fall off the poles. do the original posters come by and take them down after the event? not in my experience.
by putting up kiosks, at least this trash can be managed in one area instead of hundreds.
OP: While I generally agree with your sentiment that it’s a foolish by-law, you’re still an idiot. It is in no way a violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The telephone/power poles are property of HRM/NS Power so you have ZERO rights to be putting posters up on them. If you want to avoid any serious troubles, use clear packing tape to put the posters up instead of staples. By using a staple gun you’re technically defacing private prpperty. And the biggest problem with postering/flyering in this city is not the by-law, it’s other posters. People poster right over stuff that was just put up. They don’t bother to look and see if they event they’re postering over has passed or not.
It is illegal because they are ugly, distracting, and polluting. Signage adjacent to motorways is strictly regulated for Public safety. A direct violation of your Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms? are you fucking kidding me? As your ‘right’ to post a poster could sucessfully be argued – which it can – the tricky problem of the tele-pole NOT BEING YOUR FUCKING PROPERTY kinda messes that up. The other problem of one persons rights not trumping the rights of the public also get in the way. Whether you agree or not, our laws are ratified by our elected officials which represent the ‘rights’ of the public.
I also read somewhere that you can find statistics that would support any argument by reading something somewhere.
Seriously OP: Refresh my memory. What part of the Charter was it that guarantees the right to litter the city with posters promoting your shitty indie band’s free show at the pavilion?
Please enlighten us… douche.
I think we should go to the OP’s house and plaster posters all over their property.
The posters are definitely ugly, Walter.
Most of them are very poorly designed
by amateurs. On top of that, I’ve seen
many posters that have too many
pictures, and I have to step up within
two inches of the poster to see the
headliner’s name.
Anyhow, a better way to put up
posters is to go into
stores throughout the down-town
area, and ask the employees if you
can put your posters up in the window
of the store, or on a bulletin board.
People in those stores will more likely
take the time to look at the ugly
things.
“I also read somewhere that you can find statistics that would support any argument by reading something somewhere.”
genius.
Hey, OP…Have you heard of the internet? THERE you can put up as many posters as you want, and you don’t even need staples or tape!
Hey, maybe you should start a site that would act as a replacement for all the places you thought were a good place to post posters in the city before now…one central location…you could call it halifaxpole.com
You know what’s ugly, not to mention a health hazard? Empty poster poles with thousands of rusty staples in them.
Posters on poles is how you know shit’s going in the city. The penis poles are great, but they tend to get papered over by people with no etiquette. Posters on poles make me spend more time on the street; isn’t that what we want, foot traffic and then support for local business? Stop being lameass old farts.
The city tears all posters down on the 1st and 15th of the month. (And apparently a few days later?) In between you should be ok.
