So I’m walking in north end Dartmouth with my kid and this asshole goes “Hey, baby.” Then as I continue to ignore him he says to his friend “She’s so a hooker.” If my child wasn’t with me I would have told him off and taught him to keep his mouth shut.
What is wrong with people now? A mother can’t take her child for a walk on a summer day without hearing that shit?! I hope my child doesn’t remember what was said or else I will have words with this asshole. —Pissed Off Mother

  1. Maybe he said hooker, maybe he said looker … either way, in my opinion, it’s not appropriate to cat call when a woman is with a child.

  2. wow, you were walking with your kid, hmmmm, i didn’t know goats had sensitive ears? as to the next timr, why not the first time, right then and there? let your kid see how the real world works, and not be afraid to get vocal, if the need arises. you have just taught your kid, to take it, and not stand up for themselves in the future. yep, a great mom indeed.

  3. Yup. That’s the answer. React to something meant to be derogatory or to provoke in front of your child – good call!!

Clearly this recommendation is the response of a parent of a current/future mensa member(s). Cue the “my kid(s) goes to Harvard I got proof you suck and overprotect your kid going to send body parts all over canada wah wah wah”

Pubic announcement for those living with mommy and/or daddy (particularly those in their parent’s basements) because they are not going into debt saving to pay down student loans refuse to admit they are dateless losers destined to die alone – THERE IS NO BENEFIT TO YOUR KID (yup – we all know you basement dwellers have no kids – just trying to help in your future planning) HEARING YOU SINK TO THE LEVEL OF THE TOO MANY TO COUNT LOSERS IN THIS CITY.

    Bring it.

  4. Life Sucks, I believe it’s better to ignore dipshits like that, especially around children. I’ve come to understand that, despite my sharp tongue, there’s nothing that I can say that won’t simply escalate the situation. Any asshole who’s going to cat call me is certainly only going to mock me or otherwise continue to try to demean me the moment I choose to engage with him. He wants me to engage with him; that makes him feel powerful. I ignore idiots like that and think our children should do the same. Unless there’s a physical threat and I need to defend myself physically, there’s no need to give that kind of shit the time of day. Kids would be better off if they learned to do the same instead of thinking they need to confront every loser with no respect.

  5. …too bad you couldn’t jus take dumbasses like this outback and shoot’em..yea know they’re lives are quite purposeless anywho

  6. Lou … I agree fully and completely. Rising above and walking away during that type of situation, and then discussing it afterward with your child(ren), is the way to go.

  7. I am hoping that asshole was a 13 year old kid that still has hope to grow into a decent human being… I doubt it though.
Calling these punks on their shit will sometimes make a difference but I wouldn’t risk it either if I had a kid with me, especially in north end Dartmouth.

  8. Wait! How did he KNOW she was a hooker…!? And what’s wrong with being a hooker?

  9. Kid or no kid, no one deserves to hear that shit. It’s not up to the victim to deal with the idiots, it’s up to “people” to act civil and not harass others.

  10. Sorry to hear about what happened to you and your kid. You shouldn’t have to put up with this, whether you have a child by you or not.

We want to end street harassment. We’re starting by tracking how often it happens in HRM and where. If you (or anyone reading this) wants to add their experiences to our map, you can do so here:

We also have tips for responding to harassers. It’s your not your responsibility to help all the jerks who cross your path to be better human beings, of course (that would take all day every day) but some of them may be useful if you have to talk to your kid about how to respond to bullies in public.

    Take care.

  11. Just give them a serious dose of indifference. Let them feel how meaningless they actually are.

  12. A few words that cannot be used in the same sentence; North End Dartmouth and Respect.

  13. You could make it a teachable moment to your kid.

“This, my child is what you call a dirtball. You don’t want to touch it (engage in a verbal altercation) or you will get dirty. There is a time to respond, and a time when the wise person says nothing, realizing that the comment was not personally meant, and the little pisher who uttered it will have forgotten all about it in half a kilometer. So we’re going to let the little jerk face go”
