I’ve had many sleepless nights this past week, so this morning when I woke up after a full night’s rest I was super happy and started my day with a great attitude. Then I had to go get blood work done. Neither the lady who registered me, nor the nurse who actually took my blood, were friendly in the least!

You deal with the public every day and this is how you act? I know dealing with the public can be hard sometimes but I smiled pretty much the whole time because of my good mood, despite your non friendly demeanour. Neither of you could even at the very least RETURN A SMILE!? I won’t even get started on the fact that neither of you said more than 5 words to me. The job that you’re in, in case you don’t realize, people kind of count on you to ease their worries and make them feel comfortable. Even after telling the nurse to have a great day I barely got a grunt out of her. If you can’t even smile when people smile at you, maybe your cranky ass should stay home or find a new line of work. —Still happy

  1. Any clues as to which locale this was?

The people who do the registrations are usually pretty friendly with me when I go (I go to the one by the superstore on joe howe *winkwink*). I usually strike up a conversation with them myself and ask how many viles they’re taking and there’s one who’s usually really friendly that I get a lot of the time and we joke about having to pee in a cup.

The other locale (a hospital on Robie)… a whole other story. Last time I was there I got to go in the express line because I had been in for an ultra sound and when you have other appointments they don’t make you wait. The registration lady was SO mean and the one who took the blood was really quite nasty too. I mean, having to pee in a cup and parade it out into the hallway in front of everyone in there is kinda humiliating — least they could do is be nice 🙁

    So i don’t go there anymore 🙂

  2. Is there really a bitch about somebody not smiling..really?

I guess it is good that we don’t have worse things to complain about..but REALLY!

  3. Some people get really tense when they have to get blood work done and if they’re anything like me, looking at me sideways when I’m nervous would make me burst out in tears. LOL. And I’d probably bitch about someone making me cry because they were OMG SO MEAN. haha.

Man, I really gotta get a grip, don’t I? lol

  4. OP, did you give them a tip? Next thing we’ll be seeing another bitch on here about service staff not getting enough in tips. Keep it simple, don’t tip anyone.

  5. suck it up..not everyone is or can be happy just because you feel in a good mood…it’s called life! maybe they received bad news or a family member is abusive, etc, etc, etc…the point is,not everyone is at the same point of the day when their moods match exactly!

  6. Try George Carlin’s bit on Have A Nice Day and think of that when confronted with disgruntled workers, Have a Nice Day

  7. Really, i know a blood worker and she’s incredibly friendly and always comments to me about the nice people she got blood off all day, i guess its hard to be 100% all the time, no need to bitch about it though.

  8. Fuck. Some people have faces that just don’t smile like those “Hollywood” smiles. I happen to have one of them. It doesn’t mean I’m angry or whatever. That being said, their job is to take your name, give you a number, and tell you where to wait. And another secret, some people hate to chitchat, it doesn’t mean they’re unfriendly. And finally it is the first damn thing in the morning who the fuck is happy then (unless ya got some).

  9. Tim…I guess that’s why I had such a big smile on my face today ~:)
OB, my father turned me on to this little bit of info.
THere are several locations in Dartmouth, where you can go & give blood in the mornings. One of them is a pharmacy in the same building as the Dartmouth Courthouse, which is located right beside the Dartmouth General Hospital. I went there this week on Tuesday at 9 am. there was a line up of 1 person ahead of me. It is open there 3 days a week
In less than 10 minutes I had been tapped for 5 vials of blood, I paid him $11.00 & I was on my way.
They send it to the lab for you & your doctor gets the information just like if you went to the hospital & climbed into the huge crowd you always find there !
TO be able to get blood work taken in 10 minutes, is IMO worth the 11 bucks.

  10. jebus, two bitches with blood in them, in one day yet? holy shit, i think i’m gonna go get bit by an umpire or whatever the fuck bites you. other than a cheap slut that is. damn it all o.p., you don’t let us know if she drank it or not. just waiting for the meds to kick in people, ahhhhhhhh, there they go.

  11. I can’t stand when people say, “Why aren’t you smiling?!”. It was usually teachers in school. The answer would be because I’m at school, sitting here not really doing much, or at least not doing anything that requires a smile. Like if I’m not smiling then I must be mad/sad or something.

  12. I hate that too, mel. Most people don’t have a “smile” as their “relaxed” face — you k now the face you just have when you’re just sitting there not doing anything. And those who DO kinda look like dinks anyway. heh.

  13. I think you can acknowledge someone’s attempt to connect without overdoing it; a smile is only one way, another is a little eye contact, another is a little extra effort in your reply or even some inane comment on the weather, but I agree: we all have bad mornings or just moments of distraction when we could have done a little better responding. On the other hand, dealing with someone who’s just a had a really good sleep and/or got some last night can be a little hard to take, especially if they’re aggressively attempting to get a smile out of you.
