So what is the deal with the harbour? Does it stink? or does it not? It always used to be gross – is it back to that? or is it worse?
I’m trying to plan my wedding on a certain silvar sailing vessel, and I’m doing it from Calgary. Do I book it and risk the stench? or is it all hype?
Can someone shine some light on this stinky situation?
—Cant smell from here….

It seems to me that it stinks some days, and not so much on others…
NM is right. It all depends on the day and the location.
However, I have never actually been out in the middle of the harbour and it may not smell there.
Maybe someone who has taken a tour or crossed on the ferry can enlighten us?
On a side note, I saw a wedding on one of the sailing ships during Tall Ships and thought it was an awesome idea. I say do it anyway OP, and hope for fair weather…
There was a bitch within the last few days about the harbour smell – check it out.
I live on Barrington and I can assure you – it stinks like a MoFo.
If your wedding is later in the year when the weather has cooled off, you might be ok, but otherwise I’d steer clear.

Hope that helps….
Just did the buskerfest today, and then the ferry home..plus I work on barrington…find another location….it stinks..
On cool days when there is a breeze the smell doesn’t seem quite as bad but on warm days when the air is still the stench is far worse than it was in previous years.
Why risk it?
OOOH Hi Carolyn 😛
There are way nicer places in NS to get married on a boat. Go to the Bra’s Dor lakes or chester, lunenburg, mahone bay, anywhere else but halifax really.
I was down there tonight and it just smelled like the harbour. It stinks but I didn’t find it worse then it normally does.
I got married at Liscombe Lodge in Guysborough County. Beautiful location and perfect amenities.
AK, it’s Bras d’Or.
Hey the best thing about it being on a boat…it’s movable! Just tell them you want to cruise AWAY from the Casino area…that seems to be where the really nasty emanations are concentrated.
I was just about to say the same thing DER. There’s no reason the wedding has to circle the harbour for the whole time. But it does make a good launch site.
The smell was disgusting this morning! Worst I’ve smelled in the last year I’ve lived here. The whole ferry terminal (Halifax side) smelled like an outhouse.
What about skipping the harbour, and opting for the Northwest Arm? It’s just as lovely and the waters are (almost) always calm. In terms of urban living, it’s hard to beat for beauty. I don’t like weddings, but a boat on the Arm would have any wedding I’ve ever heard of beat.
It depends. The Coast has an article explaining the whole ‘treatment plant malfunction’ issue too, and it does say the plant won’t be operational until 2010. I work downtown and it is really putrid sometimes – but other posters are right, it does depend on the day.
So chances are you may encounter some gross sewage…but it may depend on how far out you sail, you don’t have to keep to the harbor. And there is, as forestgreen said, the Arm. Although I’d hate for the smell to rise up on your big day. What a gross-out.
Yeah, I know it is Bras D’or… I messed up.
No, it’s Bras d’Or. Oh snap
I attended a wedding on the same vessel you are concidering….before the harbour ‘clean up’ began. The ship doesn’t stay right in the harbour….at least we didn’t. It traveled out and around to the nw arm and back again. Great idea and a great ship to be on as well…and yes there are quite a number of excessively beautiful places in NS other than Halifax to be married on a tall ship, but I myself like the downtown veiw. Other than the yucky refinery on the other side, it’s beautiful in its own right. Simply a matter of opinion. I say, if that’s what you really want, why let a couple nasty smells take that away. All the best with whatever decision you make!!
