Why does the coast advertise dj’s and karaoke under the heading of “Live” music. Live music is delivered by a person or person’s performing music. Karaoke and dj’s do provide a sort of entertainment, but it’s not “Live MUSIC.”

Hi, Live Musician. I’m the Coast’s listings editor. As part of the paper’s redesign, there are now going to be categories in “live music by day” that include “DJ” “Big Ticket” (shows that cost a certain amount at the door) etc etc so everyone’s shows are nicely organized and appropriately highlighted. As for karaoke, I know a number of die-hard crooners who would fight you for the right to have their efforts referred to as “live music”….but I think that argument is for another day.
I would never argue with anyone about the ahhh , ‘entertainment’ value offered by those who ‘participate’ in Karaoke. I will however like to disagree with it often being called singing !Singing along with…perhaps, but singing I don’t think so.
I spent some time as a karaoke host… the suckiest job ever. TOTALLY not “live music”. Sorry people, doesn’t classify as music 9 times out of 10, and half of those people who sing karaoke are so pickled they might as well be deceased. The other half won’t drink anything but water in case they hurt their “voices”. No alcohol? How can they live with themselves? LOL
