Come on, Coast, we’re a “supercity”. I understand this is a free publication, and you may not have a ton of writers.
But why don’t you have any recomendations on Bedford, Sackville, or Dartmouth stuff? It’s not like it’s a billion miles to the end of the earth.
Surely to God there are restaurants and attractions in those places that somebody might be willing to write about?
–It’s the HRM now…

  1. “:Surely to God there are restaurants and attractions in those places that somebody might be willing to write about?”

    ummmm, nope!

  2. Sackville….would you like Zeller’s 1980’s acid washed jeans with that?

Spryfield….would you like a gunshot with that?

Dartmouth….would you like a yoyo hommie wannabee gangster with that?

  3. There are people over 20 living in Dartmouth who aren’t “yoyo hommie wannabee gangster”s. We don’t all live in Jellybean Square.

And there are actually a few really good restaurants on the Darkside…

  4. I’ve seen Nectar Social House mentioned in the Coast before, but then again why do you read The Coast to recommend resaurants for you? Just google Halifax Restaurant Guide and you’ll find recommendations for restaurants throughout HRM. Who reads the Coast for more than the bitches anyway? Unless you like hearing the latest indie, “you wouldn’t get them anyway”, tree-hugging, femenist, artsy “bands” to come to town, or laughing at Hilary Shitly’s latest attempt at trying to sound like she’s above a film, or Dan Savage’s lovely column.

  5. la perla being one exceptional gem.

but seriously, unless you’re talking alderny landing, all the major events and noteworthy items are in haliwood.*

who the hell goes to downtown dartmouth to party???
my son’s place is just the diviest place I’ve ever been in…

*I can’t believe I used the word haliwood… I need a cold shower and some robitussin.
    there’s something wrong with me…

  6. “Just google Halifax Restaurant Guide and you’ll find recommendations for restaurants throughout HRM.”
Um, because our restaurant guides are FAR more credible than anything else out there? We put a lot of time and effort into keeping our location pages up to date. Far more than the competition.

I agree, I think we need to do more coverage of the suburbs and our food people are out beyond the pale looking for quality, too. We’re also restricted by space, so if you have ones we’ve missed, let us know here:

  7. “all the major events and noteworthy items are in {gag}” 🙂 (Had to zZz, sorry. lol)

I beg to differ, in Dartmouth alone, we have the Highland Games/Scottish Festival, Dartmouth Players Theatre, Eastern Front Theatre, SuperNova Theatre Festival, Maritime Fiddle Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, as well as various Regattas with Olympic Paddlers competing.

There’s Fisherman’s Cove in Eastern Passage, also out that way is a spectacular French-style patisserie that rivals those in Montreal.

Le Perla is a great restaurant, but this supports your Alderney Gate theory – what about Jamieson’s in Cole Harbour? The Vines on the number 7 highway? Kababji in Burnside? The Tin Roof Teahouse in Porter’s Lake? It’s All Greek to Me in Russell Lake?

I’d talk about stuff in Bedford, Sackville, Timberlea, etc., but I don’t travel out there much…

My point is, it’s easy to stay where you know. When I lived in Toronto, I was lucky enough to have the time to travel through multiple neighbourhoods, and discover some great spots. I urge people everywhere to do the same – you can get an excellent appreciation for what’s in our *whole* city. (Although transit makes it a bit more challenging here).

The Coast was always Halifax-centric, but with the ability for people to post to the online version, maybe the OP should just start writing reviews for wherever s/he is?

  8. YES GIDGET! The more people review quality online, the more it is on our radar. So let us know!

  9. “I beg to differ, in Dartmouth alone, we have the Highland Games/Scottish Festival, Dartmouth Players Theatre, Eastern Front Theatre, SuperNova Theatre Festival, Maritime Fiddle Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, as well as various Regattas with Olympic Paddlers competing.”

    all those don’t count… namely because I didn’t know about them. 🙂
well I knew about the dragon boats but I mean where else are you going to put it?
city of trees or city of lakes???
I suppose we should have a lumberjack competition here though….

“I’d talk about stuff in Bedford, Sackville, Timberlea, etc., but I don’t travel out there much…”

    ditto for me to Dtown.*

“The Coast was always Halifax-centric, but with the ability for people to post to the online version, maybe the OP should just start writing reviews for wherever s/he is?”

That sounds like a marvelous idea… I’m sure we’ve got enough people on here alone that can cover pretty much every subdivision… and even some in other cities!
Bitches Unite, we have some food to eat and articles to write.

*god damn it, I did it again. I mean…. uhh…. I was DEMONSTRATING how stupid you look when you do this. yes,… that was my intent.

  10. “Supercity”…Ha! More like great big small town, with the attitude (of most who live here) to go with such a description. Halifax sucks ass.
Sure, there is some merits to the town, but to those that have lived elsewhere for any length of time, its plain to see the epic fails/faults that are day to day in Hali.
For such a small population, there is a disproportionate amount of crime and piss poor attitude and holyer than thouness.
Get some perspective fer fuck sakes.
As far as the Coast printing stuff on the surrounding towns, you are not too far from ANYwhere in NS to just go and check shit out for yourself.
Don’t rely on others to make up your mind for you, just keep informed, be social, talk to people and go check shit out.
There’s also this thing called the “interweb” that might help you tune in to whats going on around town (and the rest of the world)

  11. The Coast’s approach to resto reviews seems to be that if it is on Gottingen St or surrounding high-crime environs it is great; everything else is too bourgeois…

  12. I heard that Moxie’s over in Dartmouth Crossing isn’t bad. Just watch out for those scandalous Little Black Dresses!

And don’t forget Curly Portable’s Pub & Grub. Is that even in HRM?

Mother Webb’s Steakhouse just outside of Antigonish is OK, as well. That’s still kind of HRM too, right?

Apparently New Glasgow has the best pizza in North America. Yes, even better than the pizza in NYC.

Point being, there are plenty of fine establishments off of penisular (hehehe) Halifax.

  13. though this is likely reiterating because I’ve written reviews in the review section…
il mercato is absolutely fantastic. sensational even…

opah’s nice for a bit of greek indulgence though can get pricey with apps and deserts… but they’re SO GOOD. I mean, how can fried cheese NOT be good.

best choice is king of chinese for me simply for their portions…

sicilian for pizza/donair grub though the people fucking suck at getting your order right most times.

those spicy/honey chicken fingers at jack astors are pretty awesome…

and montana’s for wings and ribs.

  14. zZz: If you Like OPA!, go to “It’s All Greek to Me” in Russell Lake – WAY better, IMO, (and I lived in Greektown)!

  15. Coast writers are all eco-greenie-AlGore-wannabe-globalwarming-earthday-earthhour-hippie-hempheads who wouldn’t set birkenstock-clad foot in an automobile unless it was powered by ethanol-corn-hydrogen-biodiesel-chickenfarts. Thats why they don’t mention Bedford or Sackville. How can they get there on their bicycle?
