Don’t you see it? The dilapidated buildings; the empty/vacant stores; the divide between each other based on race and income; the drugs being spread around so greedily; all that hate and jealousy… Don’t think I do not see you. Powder keg. While I know that some of us are trying to keep everything in order, in some way more stable, we only protect ourselves when it comes down to the heart of the matter. Where is the progress for the people, and each other? Do we have a direction? Halifax is losing its charm, when you look too closely, you will notice it. Enjoy the streets while you can, I’ll see you there every night—maybe you might really see me. —The Flaneur

  1. It’s sad, because Halifax has ther potential to be such a great place. There are elements of it which I really love, but there’s too much that doesn’t work for me to ever move back. I get too angry walking down Barrington St- what should easily be the one of the prettiest streets in the city. And I agree with the OP about the divides based on race and income; it definetly seems alot worse in Halifax than most other places I’ve been. Sad.

  2. Halifax peaked during World War Two and has been in decline ever since. Nothing new.

  3. “…alot worse in Halifax than most other places I’ve been…” – Where’s that? Detroit? New York? India? Haiti?

  4. dude, halifax isn’t dying, it’s been dead long fucking time, and just too lazy and stupid to lie down, and accept it’s fate.

  5. It is pretty gross. I used think Barrington St. was as bad as it could get, then I saw the freak shows hanging out in front of Park Lane on ‘the fashion district of the maritimes’ or whatever you call SGR.

  6. But in SGR’s defence, the few blocks of it are probably the best asphalt around, most other streets are riddled with holes.

  7. “North Preston”?!!?

Are we putting a label on people and areas, here, sebasturd?

  8. Shit you think Halifax is bad, go to North Dartmouth of many parts of Sackville. That being said I agree Halifax is dying because it doesn’t like young people, unless they’re students, and even then not so much. No young people = no future. Seems like a lot of people don’t care what happens after they die.

  9. our son is gone away tommy and i hope he moves back, but not bloody likely *sigh*

  10. Yeah, you’re not alone there, paingirl. Blame the old conservative (small c) buggers that hate change.
