I want to send some love to the Halifax Council (at least the 13 of the 23 members) that voted against the new property tax reform that was going to start charging property taxes based on services and not property values. THANK YOU! You saved the average family from further financial woes. The new system would have seen the property taxes for the richest homes fall sharply while the average family would see sharp increases in their property tax bills. I hope you all get rewarded for your logical decision. I know I will sleep better.

You know, for all the hate directed towards Gloria McCluskey on this site, she’s the one that killed it.
So while you’re having a beer at the Natal Day beer garden, at least toast her for that.
There was a Property Tax Proposal?! I gotta pay more attention to this stuff :s
It was a good decision. However, did you watch the rest of the council session? My God, they love to hear themselves speak while beating dead horses.
Urban sprawlers should pay higher taxes. Dense urban cores are more efficient, and those who live in them should be rewarded through the tax code.
I agree, ‘Fundamentalist’. Not that I’m biased or anything…
