I’m so sick of hearing about H1N1. The information is so back and forth I have to wonder if everything we’ve been told has been shear guesswork. As for those trying to talk me into getting the vaccine…do you honestly think I would put something in my body that was rushed through testing in the off chance that I might get a flu that has killed less people than the actual common flu virus? Are people really this crazy? I’m actually nervous that the Canadian media is taking a page out of the American fear-mongering notebook.

Hey Walter, how about you leave the choice up to the individual? In other words, shut your oh-so-informed trap! Some of us (most people I know) would rather chance getting sick for a week than chance having lifelong side effects that are potentially associated with the vaccine. Apparantly you’re unaware that not all vaccines/medications are truly “proven science” until much later, after people have been using them for years. FLUstered is right, H1N1 kills less people than the “regular” flu and the only real danger is for the young and elderly. So long as those who contract it keep themselves hydrated, they’ll be fine. THey needed to be vacinated to protect them(according to their leaders), from possible harmful viruses. It has been reported that over 43,000+ service personel are suffering…all of them American.From dibilitating effects which can be linked to these vaccinations.
The military leaders & US Gov. of course deny any connection, but IMO this little fact speaks volumes.
You see, almost no problems like these with any other Nations soldiers who were present at the same time… the British, Canadian,Saudi & Iraqi troops were not vaccinated.
So they don’t have what has sometimes been called Gulf War Syndrome.

ok so you know these vaccines are getting bad when I just turned on a show my 3 year old watches (Sid the Science Kid) and it was all about vaccinations.
FWIW I’m not getting this vaccine, few have died from h1n1 and I know an adult and her teenage child just diagnosed with the virus and all they were told is to stay home and do nothing about it….after 7 days they won’t be contagious and they can go back to work and school …….sounds real deadly
maybe Canada should have worked harder at a medication for treatment of those already affected rather than a preventative vaccine that they don’t even know works yet.
I would like to know what, exactly, “seasonal flu” is. Even H1N1 descends from the 1918 influenza bug (we know because a lot of our elders who survived 1918 have immunity to H1N1).
I think it’s right to question the validity and usefulness of vaccines given the YEARS it takes your immune system to recover from a single vaccinations. Not that long ago they were talking about a chick pox vaccine for school children. $10 says you caught it and another $10 says you didn’t die from chicken pox. Since we don’t immunize against chicken pox we can expect more of the same… 99% survival rates. Try and eradicate it and it will get stronger and eventually become deadly. This is not to say it will happen with the flu and flu-vaccines but how else does a super-bug impress a dead Darwin?

As for science, vaccine science is one of the most studied in our history, and it is proven to save lives. We have been using them for years, they either work, or dont, the antibodies produced protect, or dont. The mercury and squalene controveries have long been settled. Both naturally occuring and naturally ingested for all of human history. I flat out call wrong “on the only real danger is for the young and elderly”…the reason H1N1 is so scary is because it is KILLING people who in no way come close to young and elderly. Yes, yes, seasonal influenza will kill many tens of thousands of NA’s this year but the seasonal flu will follow the traditional path – killing off the margins.
As for the GWS-vaccine link, that is just a pile of shit. The americans were vaccinated for one thing – Anthrax – which is an active bacterial vaccine and since British, SA, Iragi, and American troops all display similar rates of GWS, its link has been dismissed. The more probable cause for GWS is nerve gas exposure and uranium dust exposure, since it has been proved to have contaminated large areas of Iraq. Almost 100 years of vaccine history proves GWS as a blip, more attributable to environmental factors than anything else.

It is true that the seasonal flu kills more people than H1N1 but because its not something new, the media doesn’t report it. Most of the fatalities from H1N1 are due to the individual having underlying conditions.
As a matter of fact, there was a message from a local doctor on the radio this morning telling people if they start to see/feel symptoms, stay home! ONLY proceed to the hospital/emergency if you are experiencing severe symptoms such as trouble breathing.
I’m sorry that the family in Toronto lost their 13 year old son to H1N1 but what about all of the other children that have died this year due to influenza?

Been vaccinated up the ying yang for almost all known diseases, have the certificates to prove it. The risk is lower than the risk from the flu. Quite simple, the other stuff is just like the ‘Bush did 911’ crowd.

I’m not medical professional, but I’m pretty sure the Rhinovirus is the “common cold”.
The “seasonal flu” is Influenza A B or C. It’s called “seasonal” because each year there is a new strain.
I find it interesting to read all the conspiracy theories surrounding H1N1 and the vaccine. Yes, this vaccine has trace amounts of a mercury derivative in it, but as someone already mentioned there is more mercury in a can of tuna than there is in this vaccine. Yes, this vaccine was created in a hurry, but that’s no different than the flu shot that comes out every year. These strains emerge, and researchers quickly come up with the vaccine. This is no different. Yes, there are potential side effects, but I don’t see how that’s different from any other medication or drug. Some people will react to Ibuprofen. Some can’t tolerate chemotherapy. This is no different.
In the end, an individual has to weigh the benefits and the risks, and to me, those benefits far outweigh the risks. I’m in a high risk category (preggers) so I am getting the shot first thing next week.
If you’re skeptical, why not discuss your concerns with your health care provider? They’re the experts, not a bunch of yahoos (myself included) on the internet.

Kay, “seasonal Flu” is, as was pointed out, caused by the influenza virus. Each year, a variety of influenza viruses are circulating amongst the population with certain strains being more dominant than others. This year H1N1 is the most aggressive with the three viruses making up the seasonal flu vaccine being the next most common or aggressive.
When people say that H1N1 hasn’t killed as many people as the seasonal flu, that’s not necessarily true. H1N1 is only one strain and it’s being compared to ALL of the deaths caused by multiple strains that are circulating. It’s turning out that H1N1 actually is more serious than other flu strains in that younger, healthier people seem to be more susceptible to it. So, even though the total death due to H1N1 don’t outpace all the other flu deaths, there is reason to be more cautious about H1N1, especially if you are in that young, healthy adult category.
The abundance of flu strains is also why people still get the flu even though they got the flu shot. Also, people often mistake other viruses and respiratory infections for the Flu, leading people to the the flu shot is ineffective. It’s the ability of Influenza to maintain genetically and physically diverse populations that also prevents us from building one cure-all flu vaccine. Collecting immunity to the various strains of virus present in the season flu vaccines over the years is one way to increase the ability of your immune to provide effective and broad protection against as many strains of the virus as possible.

Kay, I think that the vaccine the Europeans are using is the pandemic vaccine which is made differently than the seasonal flu vaccine (i.e. with adjuvant). The vaccine that has undergone safety testing was tested using H5N1. When H1N1 came onto the radar this spring, the manufacturers started making their pandemic vaccine using H1N1 instead of H5N1. Switching the virus should not affect the safety of the vaccine, only the potential efficacy. Because they used the H5N1 production platform to make the H1N1 vaccine on such short notice, the companies haven’t had time to test the vaccine (until recently) for efficacy, even though the safety of the vaccine is established.

I think what really boogles my mind in this whole debate, is the statements along the line of “Get the shot and live, don’t get the shot and die”. There is no guarantee either way. Getting the shot does not mean you have no chance of ever getting H1N1. It is meant to lessen your chance of getting it, or if you do contract the virus, your body will handle it better and you won’t get as sick. There is still a chance that you could get, and die, from H1N1 even after getting the shot. Same as not getting the shot. You may be perfectly healthy, never getting H1N1, and then again you may get it and be sick a few days, or you may die. It is all odds people. You need to decide if the possible side effects (and their associated odds) are worth changing your odds for the flu. Just remember there are no hard and fast rules of what will or will not happen.

Wonder why people aren’t getting a shot? Maybe because over the years we were given dire warnings about SARS, Bird Flu, Swine Flu (a few decades ago), West Nile, E-Coli, and a host of other viruses, etc, that were going to kill us, never happened to any extent. They cried “Wolf” once too often.
I’ve had enough shot in my life (including the shots for Iraq 1), never had a flu shot and probably never will.
Further they’re saying H1N1 yet very few have had blood tests to confirm this. So we don’t know if people actually have it, another type of flu, a cold, or just plain playing hookey and using this as an excuse.

In Toronto you can go buy a vaccine at a private clinic. Few hundred bucks, apparently. Got the supplies from Toronto public health, apparently. Gov’t is none too happy about that, I heard on the news.
