It pisses me off that the cost of most/all groceries are going up fast and at the local food stores in my area, they are continuing to ask for donations at the checkout (which the stores then claim as their own, such great corporate citizens are they) and they are also not bagging groceries anymore. I was no good at tetris and I am crap at bagging my own groceries. With the price that the stores charge for their wares, I find it disgusting that they would not offer this service, especially to the senior citizens who shop in their stores. Not bitching at the employees, but the last I checked, the higher ups in the grocery store corporations make TONS of cash, you’d think they could pay a couple more low paid employees to bag groceries. GREEDY POS’s. —don’t think I’m asking too much prices increase 20% a year.

  1. Pretty sure they don’t solicit then steal donations… and they your bag groceries at Sobeys. Where do you live?

Mod: you may wish to avoid posting bitches by crackheads than deleting funny comments by commentors…

  2. I guess someone’s welfare dollars aren’t going as far as they used to. Don’t worry, Sport, bagging your own groceries isn’t classified as work.

  3. Not sure where you shop but Sobey’s and Superstore bag for you, unless you;re in the 1-15 item lane. Grocery stores only make about 2% on groceries so I don’t know where you are getting being robbed blind. Maybe you should direct your anger at the manufacturers. And what do you mean they claim donated food as their own? Do you have any evidence of this?

  4. My, my… based on the number of dislikes on my original comment, it would appear that the crackheads like posting bitches…!

  5. I was really offended that in England, the cashiers sit down and don’t do anything other than scan your goods over the barcode reader. They will sit there and watch you struggle to bag your own groceries (I don’t mind bagging but I can’t get the stupid thing open to put stuff INTO it!) until the landing pad is clear enough for them to put the next person through.

Sounds like OP shops somewhere that has a lot of yellow box products? That’s the only one I can think of that doesn’t bag your stuff for you.

  6. Corporate greed? Or is it that the drop in value of the Canadian dollar has increased the cost of all of that fresh produce and other goods we import from the USA? Is it sheer coincidence that the Canadian dollar is worth 20% less than the US dollar and the OB claims the grocery stores increased their prices by 20%? Hmmm!

  7. I think what the OB is saying is that when you give the cashier a dollar for whatever charity, the Sobeys or Superstore turns around at telephon day and says ‘look at all of the money WE are giving you, hard done by charity.’, which is a lot different that Sobeys or Superstore taking money out of their tills and giving it to the charity.

  8. What do you think they do with that $1 you agree to give them? I haven’t watched a lot of telephons but what I’ve seen is Jill Cashier coming out with branch manager in tow to present the big novelty cheque of money that they ‘raised’.

Anyway, its not a smoking gun but theres this:

Through store fundraisers, national fundraising initiatives or personal donations, our employees, vendors and customers have truly demonstrated their commitment to the President’s Choice® Children’s Charity.

Dominion gives many heartfelt thanks to all of our generous supporters.

  9. And what’s wrong with that? Are you saying they put that on their tax returns as their own? If so, do you have any evidence of that? If so, give it to Revenue Canada so they can take action on tax fraud.

  10. Um, maybe calm down a bit? Sheesh. Picture this: I give you 1 million dollars because you want to give 1 million dollars to charity. You donate 1 million dollars to charity. You are able to look like a boss and get your name on a blimp in honor of your awesomeness. See the problem?

Nobody is saying anything about tax fraud, but claiming that your gathering of other people’s money to give away just comes across as opportunistic self-aggrandizing. That’s all.

If these massive corporations paid as much in taxes as they spend on accountants to help them not pay taxes, we’d all be a lot better off. See also, Tim Hortons Kids Camps, Ronald MacDonald House.

  11. Well aren’t they the ones organizing and putting it together? Again what is wrong with it? And I believe they always announce the donations came from their patrons.
