When it comes to racist slurs or jokes, however harmlessly intentioned they may be, silence is complicity. It’s not in speaking up when someone says something offensive that someone behaves like a mindless sheep, it’s when rather than letting the person who made the comment know they’ve offended them and risking that they will react (or overreact) negatively, they stand there, listen, and say nothing. I don’t happen to believe that saying nothing serves anyone involved in the situation very well. The person who made the comment might have no idea that they have said something offensive and go on to repeat it and the person who says nothing feels guilty for keeping their mouth shut. Ivan and Martym, you can call me names, tell me to fuck off and die, and dismiss me as a PC fascist but I’m telling you, whether you want to hear it or not, that mocking someone’s culture and way of speaking isn’t cute , oh-so-hilarious, or irreverently edgy… it’s racist and offensive. Does this make you a racist person and mean that you intended to cause hurt/offense by making those kinds of comments/jokes? Probably not, considering your reaction to what I had to say but, it doesn’t mean that it’s a-ok to say that shit either.
