Where the hell are all of the dog friendly apartments in Halifax? People with pets need a place to go too, just because I have a dog doesn’t mean he’ll be up all night barking, or running around, or shitting beside the front door for everyone else to see and other dogs to smell… And just because I have a cat doesn’t mean he’s going to terrorize the place clawing it to shreds. My pets are well behaved and I clean up after my pets like a RESPONSIBLE person does. I hate the stereotyping that comes with finding a place!
I have not been able to find a dog friendly apartment that’s not in Spryfield/Herring Cove area, Sackville, nasty Dartmouth or its in a place thats so bloody expensive I could buy a house with half a years rent! I don’t want to live in any of these areas again, I just want a nice apartment where I can have my dog and cat with me.
Pets are an important part of peoples lives, and I know they’re not for everyone. But for the people that have them, the option to find a building that accepts them should be as easy to find as a retirement home or somewhere that allows smoking (wait, that is just as hard to find now-a-days isn’t it?!).
—pet friendly please!

most people don’t want you living in their property because of past experience with shitheads that had lousy mutts. that either destroyed their property, or shit and stank up the place. small or big dogs get bored and cause damage, i know. i had a yorkie years back, and when no one was home, if he got bored, he would chew on anything and everything. tried to break the habit to no avail.once they do it, there is no turning back, no matter how many obedience classses you pay for. the same goes for dogs that bite also. and therein lies another reason you can’t get a place. size, breed, looks of a dog will kill your chances, and to buy your own place is hard also, with new rules in place for mortgages. you are pretty well fucked.
There are lots of nice places in Dartmouth.
Nasty Dartmouth? What the hell man !!!! You too good for darkside OP? Limiting yourself there because I know of several really nice places that will let you have a dog . And for the price of a Halifax apartment – you can get a decent house with a yard for the same money .
I’ve got a dog, but based on the losers that lived in the basement apartment below me who let their dog shit everywhere (huge bigger than human sized craps) and didn’t bother to clean it up, I’d never rent to a dog owner. Sucks, eh.
Yea I guess landlords must get the idiots thats don’t clean up . Or let the dog(s) run loose and destroy the place . It sucks for the responsible owners with good dogs . I had a slight problem with getting my place in calgary with my dog ( I have a mastiff/staffordshire mix). But i found a nice house and I am also responsible about cleaning up after my dog and he’s an awesome dog .
As for the asshats that fuck it up for the good dog owners . Go fuck yourself and I hope your dogs bites your balls.
People lie and any potential landlord will realize that fucking song ‘Oh-My-Dog-Is-Perfect’ is about as true as the tune ‘All MLAs Are Honest’.
Doesn’t mean that our dogs are all asshole dogs. I have a good dog and Lots of people have great dogs that cause no damage. Thou I get their point in it . The shitty owners and dogs are the ones that sing that song for the rest of us who sing a different tune.
How about “children-free” apartments/condos….places where kids are NOT welcome so we don’t have to listen to the screaming, and the wahhhhwahhhhhing.
Dog owners should petition to allow landlords to take a separate damage deposit for pets. Then it wouldn’t be such a gamble.
There are a few ” adult only “buildings around . But I tend to see them more in larger cities .
“Nasty Dartmouth”?!?!? Gee, I guess I should move then. I bought a lovely home on a nice quiet Cul- de- Sac in “Nasty Dartmouth” and love it over here. It is clean and quiet and I was able to get twice the home that I would have had I decided to live in “Overpriced Halifax”. But then again, hey, maybe all of us do not have the standards that you do. Oh, and owning my own house, I have no problem having as many pets as I like. Go figure.
Time for puppy to take The Big Sleep
electricmayhem: That is a fantastic idea! Regular damage deposit for the people and a secondary one for pet damages. That could work.
Here we go again. Ugh. Dog owners can be so stupid sometimes, and I’m one of them.
I for one would pay a seperate deposit if needed . Because I know when I move its money back for the moving van !!!
this has become quite a common bitch…i have no answers for you, perhaps some dog websites would have some info…i agree bobby d’mouth has some nice areas and having your own home is the best even if the td owns most of mine^^
Is “My dog won’t cause any trouble or damage” in the same bin as “I won’t cum in your mouth” and “The cheque is in the mail”.
Oh and that goes for cats too.
a larger damage deposit could work, but some people with pets are disgusting and selfish
old cat litter stench is much worse than wet dog
You know, sebastard, I have to say I agree with you, and when I was a baby before my parents bought their first house, they had a hard time finding an apartment that would allow kids.
Problem I find with kids in apartments/condos is that their parents let them scream their faces off in the hallways. When I was little I’d get in trouble if I made a ruckus in the hallways of apartment buildings.
There is no magic label on your forehead for landlords to see that you’re one of the decent pet owners OP. Suck it up and keep looking. Seriously, you’re not even looking that hard since half the girls at work have dogs and they aren’t living in ghettoville.
Move into one of those “dirty” neighbourhoods that are actually quite nice or get rid of your dog. Rental rules don’t revolve around you and your mutt.
I don’t advocate getting rid of the dog (pets are for life, they’re not disposable), but anyone who compares a dog to a cat in an apartment is cracked. Most cats I know sleep all day, then get up for like an hour to wash themselves, eat and take a leak/shit and go back to sleep. And certain breeds are even lazier than that (mine are ragamuffins and ragamuffins = laziest mofos on the planet). When’s the last time anyone’s ever complained about a loud cat who wouldn’t stop meowing loudly (loud enough for the neighbours to hear enough to get annoyed)? And when’s the last time a cat shit or pissed on the floor (cats are insanely clean and usually only go on the floor when they’re sick or something’s wrong psychologically or they’re house trained and couldn’t get outside or couldn’t get to their litterbox)? And if you trim their claws, scratching isn’t an issue.
I know this is a bit off topic, but it just irks me when people compare dogs to cats. Besides fish, cats are probably one of the lowest maintenance pets on the planet: put food/water in their dish and change/scoop their litterbox. The fuckers are self cleaning too!
I’ve been to apartments where you could smell the stench of the litter box ten feet from the door.
I would have to suggest bro tim – that that would be the lazy owner that doesn’t clean out the box. I do agree thou cats can have nasty litter boxes but as long the the owner is vigilant in cleaning it , it normally doesn’t smell.
My yard hardly has my dogs crap in it as I take him morning and night to the park with a bag to do his business. And he doesn’t piss or shit in the house or tear nothing up ( he has tons of his own stuff to chew up ).And i check my yard every couple days for land mines and pick them up ,
But i will agree people are and can be irresponsible about having untrained dogs and or just bad dogs that destroy property and shit up the yard and they don’t pick it up . the onus lays on the owner , not the dog . The dog learns what the owner teaches or allows it to do. And that shit fucks it up for the rest of us that take care and train our dogs the house rules .
My dog is now 3 years old – I have him trained well enough that i can make him sit on a busy street downtown calgary and not move till i walk up half a block and call for him . It took all my time and effort to train him to be a good listening dog that obeys commands when told . I’m not the OP , but it pisses me off to no end when I have to go through the landlord thing because of other peoples asshole attitudes and dogs . Although I totally get where these landlords are coming from .
Oh yea again – “nasty Dartmouth”? Fuckin Op’s shit don’t stink eh? Rather pay for a shit ass apartment in south end hali when they can have a house in woodlawn or CH for much less. Good luck with that . Dartmouth doesn’t like snobs anyways , good thing!
park vic allows dogs… I see them shitting every morning on my way to work.
….. and he’s back. I was wondering just how long you’d be stuck on 2318 posts zZz….. ;-P
Really good resource for anyone wanting a dog friendly apartment in Halifax: http://charlieloveshalifax.ca/apartments.h…
The only other thing I can suggest is check out Kajiji like every 10 god damn minutes, because that’s how I’ve found my last few places (also, be ready to compromise…)
Oglivie allows dogs, as well. They’re not THAT expensive. And it’s on the #9 route too.
I have a 70lb mutt that is part rotti (wooo, scary dog! blah) and I’ve found two good apartments in the past two years (house I was living in sold, had to move) in nice areas near Halifax Shopping Center.
Also, when I was looking there were several landlords willing to take a chance on my dog and I.
I’m not sure what I’m doing differently, but I never understand these bitches.
Points to the OP for not getting rid of the pet because they are “moving and the new place doesn’t take pets”.
weed, lazy owners – ya think? Why would a landlord risk their property trying to figure out if a cat or dog is an animal from hell or that the owner is a lazy asshole?
my 2324’th post is a gem.
I’m drinking your beer tomorrow jonno… all of it….and I don’t care which fridge I have to get to to find it.
hahaha.. try as you might to find it. I learned from last time. My beer will not be in a fridge.
ug… reminds me of my warm ‘schooner’ days.
what the hell was I thinking?
better than warm ten penny
perhaps… though I should note it was voluntary…
unlike initiation weekend in chase where I consumed an entire colt 45 that had been resting in hot bathtub water for 2 hours…. in a phone booth
Gross beer that would have been ZZZ !! Trust me I know . I once drank a bottle of old english that was in a dashboard of a car for who knows how long in the summer on a drunk dare . You’d know the outcome eh? Never again !!
Dude, I couldn’t do it…but just out of curiosity, was the colt 45 in a brown paper back when you drank it?
I think the worst I got was our highschool “london dock wednesday night tradition” no mix allowed..yesh.
k- the beer will not be in the fridge, it will be in a cooler full of ice….. in a room random guests will not be able to enter without receiving a boot to the arse. But I’ll give you a couple- along with the whiskey this time. My plan to have you fall asleep in your hallway again didn’t quite come through last time 😉
L O L , o dear, what have I got myself into.
Thing about a litterbox is, it might smell, but at least the cat is pissing/shitting in a box and not on the carpet. If it’s a litterbox odor you can simply change the box; if it’s an odor from dog piss on a carpet (that’s soaked into the pad and even the subfloor underneath)….well that’s A LOT harder to get out. As well, if your cat is pissing/shitting in other places than their litterbox (the floor, for instance), take them to a vet because something is likely wrong with them (psychologically or physically).
I scoop my cats’ litter boxes every day and change the whole litter every week and I have no problem with litterbox odor. Cats have VERY strong sensitivity to smells and some won’t use their boxes (they’ll hold it) until it smells better. Every time I scoop my cats’ box or change the litter ONE of them always prances into the laundry room within 5 minutes and takes a huge dump.
And at least I don’t have to hump my arse outside at 7am during a snow storm so my cat can take a dump — I see plenty of dog owners braving the elements with their dogs early in the morning while I sit back in my nice warm jammies and cuddle with my kitties.
Plus cats purr! You gotta love that 🙂 (also, most dogs need space to get out and run — cats are fine being inside, and vets will actually encourage you to keep your cats inside to keep them safe and healthier). I always find it such a shame to have a dog cooped up in an apartment, especially if their owners work all day.
yes pk i heart cats as well as dogs, donkeys etc. it is important to keep your cats indoors and we scoop once a day and change weekly…we are lucky we can take our big boy to work
i have been in folks houses where the kitty litter was rank…hence the comparison to wet dogs vs kitty litter
hey Shane that sucks!
I’m subletting my 2 bdrm dog friendly apt right now. Nice apt, central hfx, good price. If you look hard enough, you’ll find something. My ads been on kijiji for a month. Mines rented but there’s another one for sublet.
