Give me my fucking change!
Has anyone else out there experienced this one yet? You pull up to the drive-thru window at Tim Horton’s to get your medium double-double for $1.30. You hand the girl a toonie, she hands you your coffee, turns away and arbitrarily decides that your 70 ce

ahh-fucking-men. Couldn’t agree with you more, Still Waiting. It’s not so much that i dont get my change back, but more so the attitude you get from the average Tim’s employee if you dont leave a tip. Now to be fair, i do leave change on the counter IF the service is good..and there have been times where i’ve just been half asleep when ordering my morning coffee, and absent-mindedly tossed my change back into my pocket without thinking about it until afterward. But it’s the attitude..and i’m not talking about evey single Tim Horton’s employee out there, but for every Tim’s i’ve been to, i’ve crossed paths with at least one miserable bitch. Having a bad day? deal with it. Hate your job? Start looking for a new one. The fact is, if you’re working in the service industry, you dont have a choice BUT to deal with it. Just be fucking grateful that you even GET tips..there are a lot of people working in other service jobs who aren’t so lucky.
I have previously worked at Tim Hortons in the mall and near the bridge in Dartmouth.I would ask to speak to their management – that’s ridiculous!! That’s no different than shopping for a shirt and they don’t give you your change after your purchase.
I don’t agree with the change thing they should give you your change. But only cheap people don’t leave a tip at tims or a restaurant. Hey someone has to work at Tim Hortons so all the stupid suburbanites can pull up in their giant suv’s and order a extra large double double.
So you leave a tip for someone who is rude and dismissive? Zac, i’m sure you are very generous with your money, and hey..it’s your money to spend however you like. But i can’t help but think that this is the problem. People have fallen into the habbit of routine tipping, even for poor service..so naturally, when a tip isn’t given, even for good reasons, the customer seems ‘cheap’, and the employee ends up bitter. Doesn’t TIP stand for ‘To Insure Promptness’? Sorry, but unless i recieve good service, the tip stays in my own pocket.
Note: if TIP is an acronym, then it’s routinely spelled incorrectly. To “Ensure” Promptness would make more sense. But yes I agree, as a former Tim Horton’s java jockey, the tipping thing is a bit weird. TH employees are paid the legislated minimum wage unlike those in restaurants. Leaving aside whether or not it is a living wage, the rationale for tipping TH staff and your server at a restaurant are not the same.Personally, I don’t tip them. Ever. And for the same reasons I don’t tip McDonald’s employees.
Hey Ontari-ari-ari-oh, in NS restaurant servers are paid leglislated minimum wage. Owners have lobbied for a “tip differential” in the past without success.
That’s a sweet deal for the servers in NS. Good for them. Knowing this, I’ll be a bit more careful about how I exercise that custom.
People like that is partly why I dont tip anyone, anywere. I’ve never believed in it. If you dont think you’re paid enough, just go get another job. It’s not my resposibility to supplement your income. I already have enough problems with my own income. That may seem like a asshole way to be. Though you’re being even more of a asshole having such a overwhelming feeling of entitlement that you expect me to tip you.
“I don’t tip because society says I gotta. I tip when somebody deserves a tip. When somebody really puts forth an effort, they deserve a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, that shit’s for the birds. As far as I’m concerned, they’re just doin their job.” “You don’t have any idea what you’re talking about. These people bust their ass. This is a hard job.” “So’s working at McDonald’s, but you don’t feel the need to tip them. They’re servin ya food, you should tip em. But no, society says tip these guys over here, but not those guys over there. That’s bullshit… “… Hey, I’m very sorry that thegovernment taxes their tips. That’s fucked up. But that ain’t my fault. it would appear thatwaitresses are just one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis. You show me a paper says the government shouldn’t do that, I’ll sign it. Put it to a vote, I’ll vote for it. But what I won’t dois play ball. And this non-college bullshit you’re telling me, I got two words for that: ‘Learn to fuckin type.’ Cause if you’re expecting me to help out with the rent, you’re in for a big fuckin surprise.”
To the assholes out there who like to paint all Tim Horton’s employees with the same brush. Excuse me for living and working to make an honest living. I’ll have you know that I always give people their change and say Thank you have a nice day. I’ll also have you know that everytime you come through with your kids in the back seat and I give them a cookie or offer to give your dog a timbit I have to pay for it. Hell I’ve even paid for customers coffee. So excuse if I forget and put your change into my tips
Wow – very articulate, James.
James, You’re quotations caused me to wonder and I’m thinking Good Will Hunting?PS I think we “tip” for service…
