I am retiring this year after 40 years of work. I could stay at my job for another 5 years if I wanted to. However, I feel it is my duty to move aside for the younger generation. I wish I could say the same for some of my peers. They are hanging on to their fucking well-paying jobs, grabbing top bucks and could care less about the young people, they just want their gold plated pensions and expensive hobbies. I can’t fucking stand the selfishness of these boomers. Youth needs employment so move aside and give these kids a chance otherwise this fine province is going to financially sink like a stone. — Retiring Boomer Disgusted With Greedy Boomers
This article appears in Feb 7-13, 2013.

I will work for however long I want to. It is not greed. Most people don’t get those gold plated pensions, most have to work to survive. When one retires and maybe, if they are lucky, get half of what they were getting doesn’t equate with their expenses being cut in half.
Good for you that you can afford to retire!
These folk, you imply, have it made and are just BEING GREEDY?
I’ve talked to folk that don’t know if they can ever retire, and defiantly they won’t be doing anything when they do, ‘cept SURVIVING.
Then there are the people that wouldn’t know what to do if they did retire….no imagination or no hobbies or whatever. They’d be toast without the WORK STRUCTURE.
Without knowing when your number is up…..how do you know when you have ENOUGH SAVED up? It’s scarry to pack half a suitcase for what could be a long trip. And not everybody has a nice cushy ‘retirement package’ handed to them.
Also important, is if your partner has a retirement ‘package’ or not. In those cases the bread-earners need to cover for BOTH RETIREMENTS. Many boomers fall into this scenario, the old fashioned standard.
Then there’s the whole health issue and what funds will be wiped out if/when you or your partner (or both) get cancer or any other number of DEBILITATING ISSUES.
Most folk not only want to NOT BE A BURDEN to their kids (or society) but would like to LEAVE SOMETHING behind when the curtain falls. Maybe a favorite charity offering. Maybe help the grand kids.
Having disposable funds in those golden years is nice too after providing for all the contingencies stated above maybe you could afford to see all the Neptune shows, concerts, some southern sunshine in February, buy a nice car, etc, etc! Have a fucking life for a few years before the shit hits the fan.
If you are done with work…..that’s great…..go for it!
But with the attitude you showed in your little tirade….I think your the “old fart” and should be old enough to recognize everyone has their own situations to take care of…..and that’s not GREED.
The more money you have to spend in your retirement…..the more jobs can be supported for the youth. This province isn’t sinking….it’s finally starting to gain a little buoyancy since confederation fucked us over and left us out to die.
So…..your BITCH…..Give it up you old fart!!
i’ve worked for 37 years, and i don’t have a replacement player, but i only have my own teat to suck on
If you work for the man, you will work until you die or until they find some nine y.o. in Malaysia to do it for slave wages.
I wouldn’t want to have to survive on my teat Painey! Slim pickins.
this is obviously written by a gov employee who is now retiring with a big fat pension. good fer you we are not all in that sweet place.
Obviously you haven’t tried to suck your own teats or you’d both realize it isn’t possible…….or is it just Smee?
I don’t care how long someone works. I care about people retiring with a full government pension, then getting rehired to do a similar job in another government agency. Once you retire with a government pension, there is no way you should be able to double dip. Once you “retire”, stay fucking retired. That’s the purpose of a pension.
every province should have mandatory retirement like Montreal…55, is a good age to get the fuck outta here and let me work!! lol
Hmmmm… I have a suspicion this bitch was written by a young person with a grudge. I could be wrong, but my initial instinct tells me I’m not.
With that being said, as long as I am physically and mentally capable, I will continue to work. No young buck straight out of University is going to tell me when to pack it in. Most pensions barely cover the basic necessities, and everyone’s financial situation is different when they reach the ‘age of retirement’. If you think all retirees are laughing all the way to the bank, you’re delusional.
Plus, older people don’t owe you shit. Not a got damn thing. If they choose to earn some extra money so that they can enjoy nice vacations and luxuries, that’s none of your business, and they deserve it. They probably couldn’t afford these things when they were raising their kids.
Montreal is a city.
I appreciate the concern, OP, I really do.
That said, it’s every one for oneself out there nowadays. I don’t have the luxury of saving towards retirement and the hammer that is a collapsing economy; Flying Spaghetti Monster willing, I’ll be able to get myself buried and my kid something to inherit when it’s all over. I realize now that that means I’ll be working until I die at something; it’s all just a matter now of how to spend the spare time I have and whether I shouldn’t be doing more to secure my family’s future.
well, the bitch doersn’t make any sense. op says they are ‘hanging on to their well paying jobs’ which means they are NOT retiring/collecting pension but says at the same time they ‘just want their gold plated pensions and expensive hoobies’
so which is it op? are the old farts working and NOT collecting pensions and NOT able to spend time on hobbies? or have they retired which means they are now on pension and able to spend time on hobbies? which of course would open up that job to a young person.
you can’t be hanging on to a well paying job and collecting the pension from that job at the same time.
even if you are a politician, you may be getting a pension once you are out of office, and have gone on to work in private enterprise, but you are not still at work & collecting the pension from the original job. there may be some consultant types who ‘retired’ and contract back on, but that’s not common.
i’m with hezz on this, NOT written by a boomer. if it were he/she would remember the younger days of living on spaghetti, dive apts, scrounged clothing, back alley
furniture. there were decades of lean living, esp if you had kids, before the ‘affluence’ of post kid life. you didn’t buy a first house with granite/stainless blah blah. you bought a fixer upper and a how-to book and lived with sheets of plastic and blankets over the windows in winter because you had to save up the money to get repairs/improvements done. so someone looking at the house, or the next one or the one after that as you ‘upgrade’ 30 years later can say ‘man you have a cushy life you greedy bastard’.
If one has accumulated that kind of experience and are physically and mentally capable of doing the job, why shouldn’t they keep on truckin’? We need as many productive members of society as we can get.
Government is constantly telling us there are not enough newbies to fill the massive amount of openings coming up with the boomers retiring…..which has started already.
Government says we need immigrants to help fill these positions.
I wonder, however, if any young folk are finding the countless new positions over whelming? I don’t think so…….not yet anyhow. The true measure is if employers just can’t find workers. I don’t think so…….not yet anyhow.
Theres too much double dipping hate going on. If you have a government job that gives a pension… great. If you have qualifications that will give you a second career…. even better. If you started your first career at a young age and can retire young enough to start another well paid career…… then I love you. I joined the military when my friends were partying, I’m more then halfway to a pension and my oldest friends are just starting out in the working world, I’ll retire with a full pension before I’m 40. There are some that hold that against me, I ask why?
I’m 35, and will keep working as long as I’m able to.
They hold it against you because they wish they were in your position, Sonic. Jealousy…period.
Let me add that pensions are deducted from a person’s paycheque. It isn’t free money handed to them. It’s accumulated over years of blood, sweat & tears. If the retiree chooses to take up a little part time gig as a Wally World greeter, I can’t conceive this concept of ‘double dipping’. They PAID into their pensions! It’s their money, correct?
NurseHezz; I thought if I mentioned the J word, some would view what I said as a Trolling comment. But I agree entirely. While I do pay into my pension, the government helps out as well. But it is something the employee earns and contributes to and is then entitled to.
My problem is with how some view the concept of double dipping. Like my good friend Mr Harper said, “Once you retire with a government pension, there is no way you should be able to double dip. Once you “retire”, stay fucking retired. That’s the purpose of a pension.”
A pension is something that is earned, some can earn two by starting a career early enough. Retiring to me, would be reaching an age that makes going to work a hassle (for lack of a better term). The old saying should apply, The early bird gets the worm. Or in this case, two worms.
What’s your trade Sonic?
If you don’t mind me asking, that is.
There are some who are divorced and have to pay”Parasite Pay”(alimony)to an ex wife or husband(deserving). They are forced to get another job after retiring.
These days more and more folks can’t afford to retire after retirement.
Actually, Sonic. What I was implying was that someolne that retires with a full government pension should not be allowed to work toward another government pension, while working another govt position. Why should someone that is retired with a full pension, and is taken care of for the rest of their lives, be able to double dip from taxpayers? Just because a flawed system, set up by boomers to take care of boomers on our dime, is open for abuse, doesn’t make it right.
If you think it’s jealousy that my tax dollars go to pay someone twice for the for doing one job, regardless of whether one is a pension that is “earned”, then you must be mildly retarded. My tax bill is my largest bill, more than my mortgage and car payment combined, and to think this money goes to greedy fucks taking advantage of a system I pay for… Jealousy isn’t even in the equation, but anger is. Angry that people would even think about doing something like that. People that do this are nothing but a burden on an already taxed system, and its funny how all government employees think they “deserve” everything they can beg, borrow, and steal from their fellow countrymen/women.
Avast- I cannot reveal that on an open forum. My hands never get dirty at sea and I’m not an officer…… or steward. Don’t know if that was a good hint?
PS- You could be an old supervisor of mine for all I know, lol.
Mr Harper; Well put, and I agree to an extent. When I retire I will apply for another government position, what I’ve earned for qualifications will certainly help out. I don’t agree with a complete lack of transparency in some government departments hiring process. I believe in a fair hiring process and not just who you know which is what happens too much. We both agree on that. I guess I misunderstood your point earlier, but now we’re on the same page. My largest bill is also taxes and while some old farts abuse the system, there are many deadbeats that milk the system even more without even a minor contribution to our society. I don’t like some double dippers but I hate deadbeats more. My point though, double dippers did earn their pension and worked hard (in most cases) to get where they are, you cannot hold that against some one. I may help implement changes to our broken system throughout my life, or I may just be young enough to believe I can. Either way, we are in agreement.
