So what’s up with moving the bus stops from Tacoma Centre, out of the parking lot area and onto the street? Now pedestrians have to cross Tacoma, never easy at the best of times, but infinitely harder for the senior citizens who live behind Tacoma, who relied on the nearby bus stop.
Rumors say it was deemed too dangerous for customers backing out onto the street near where the buses pass in the parking lot and that’s why the stops were moved.
I’ve got a suggestion for fixing that… how’s about the drivers LOOK before backing out? Or back into the spot so they can drive out? Or move the damn parking spaces? I guess the drivers only have to worry about backing out into the path of the buses, though, since cars still drive through there and pedestrians still walk in the area.
It’s ridiculous that people (especially the elderly) are being inconvenienced to accommodate bad driving (or parking) habits.—Not your typical transit complaint…

Umm, LS, did you read the bitch? It’s got nothing to do with shelters being destroyed, it’s about a specific store not wanting the bus stop nearby. I know which ones the OP is talking about, and the stops are now very inconvenient to almost everyone. Kind of a piss off that transit is bowing to this kind of silly demand if, indeed, the rumours are true.
Those stops at Tacoma rarely had vandalism. Maybe twice in the last five years,so,that’s definitely not the reason they were moved. There’s something else afoot.
Now they are in my way. Put them back where they were next to BK. I have having to drive past a bus that spontaneously will decide to pull away from the curb without using it’s signal.
Yes, the new location is less convenient and yes, maybe they shouldn’t be driving if they didn’t see the HUGE vehicle before backing out in front of it, but MT can’t just put them back. As a regular user of the stop, I wish they could. The OP says “customers backing out onto the street”, but they are not backing out onto a street, it is a parking lot. MT must have permission to run the routes through private property, which they no longer have.
True, MT does need permission to go through private property like that. It irks me though, there’s been a stop in that location for 45 years, since that mall was originally built, and now it’s suddenly become a hazard? Maybe when they revamped the lot with the new tenants, they could’ve thought through the traffic patterns a bit better.This is just another case of pandering to those in private vehicles. Anyone using transit are pariahs in this carcentric society.
The OP did say “street”, when it should’ve read “thruway”. The point was that vehicles are backing out into the main flow of traffic, which isn’t safe under any circumstances. At least with the traffic lanes in the other parts of a parking lot, they aren’t the main thouroughfare, so drivers are more expectant of those backing out or into spaces.
It really shouldn’t matter if the drivers are backing out onto a road, thruway, parking lot or just in their own driveway – the driver should be looking before backing up.
If the rumors are true, then it’s telling the drivers that it’s ok to not look before backing up. When one of them runs over a pedestrian, then what? Will they stop pedestrians from walking through the parking lot? Can’t inconvenience those drivers now!
