While walking my dog yesterday at Shubie Park in the OFF-LEASH area, I had the delight of meeting you. She walked over by you, maybe even sniffed your leg and you responded with a string of profanity that would make a sailor blush. I reminded you that you were in the off-leash area to which you responded that if it were up to you that there wouldn’t be an off-leash area. Apparently you didn’t care for my reply (well it’s not up to you today and tomorrow isn’t looking good either). Maybe you should get a map of the walking trails that are at Shubie Park, there’s loads of them and avoid the one little circle that’s clearly marked on all signs and maps and with signs in the trails to state that it’s OFF-LEASH. Then the dogs could enjoy their walk without you and you could be miserable somewhere else. —Unleashed

Just because it’s an off leash area does that still mean your dog and still invade someone’s space?
I would think an offleash area would lead others to presume that dogs would be wandering around, running, playing doing doggy type things. If he felt that strongly about there not being an off leash area and disliked dogs which it seems like he might have he should have done as the OP said and stayed on the trails that weren’t designated off leash
Why is it OK for you to let your dog approach someone you don’t know and who doesn’t know your dog?
Sometimes I don’t want to be around a dog. It’s not your business why, and I will be the one to decide when it’s OK and when it’s not. Your dog has no opinion in the matter, no matter how “friendly” you claim he is.
When I tell a dog to shoo, I expect him to shoo, and I expect the owner to call the dog away and tell me he/she are sorry for bothering me.
Off-leash does not mean the dog is allowed to rights above human beings who pay for maintenance of the trail.
The trails are for everyone, you know. You and your dog should both learn some manners.
Hey OP, did we run into the same person? lol
bluenoser… yes. yes it does..
because isn’t not their space to begin with
and their self entitlement is fucking flabbergasting.
why don’t they curse out the ants that walk near their shoe??? or the chipmunk scurrying up the nearest tree?
people like that shouldn’t be let out in public.
I’m pretty sure the owner of the dog helps pay for maintenance, as well, RJ.
It’s an Off Leash area of the park. Common sense tells me that if I’m in the area, expect to see, *GASP* oh my God, dogs off leash. Suck it up.
As a dog owner too, I don’t let my dog approach other people whether it is off leash or on. If people want to interact I let them decide.
Off leash does not mean any numskull can take their untrained mutt to the park and be relieved of owners responsibility. If your dog runs/walks up to another dog/person to smell it for the first time you should be there giving it permission to do so. It’s up to the master to give the dog limits, and since you don’t know the persons limits you should call your dog off.
Fuck people are idiots, if your in an off leash area your going to get approached by a dog, simple as that, if you think otherwise your a fucking tool. And to think, I dont own nor want a dog and even I’ll side with the dog owners…
See, there’s something some of you are missing here.
I am the one who determines IF and WHEN I want to be around your dog. NOT YOU. When I tell you to call off your dog, it’s YOUR responsibility to do so. No questions, no arguments, no explanations.
If YOUR dog jumps up on me, it’s because YOU have given him permission to do so. This makes you an IDIOT. Get it through your head that if I don’t know you, I do NOT want to “meet” your dog.
Keep your dog under control, so EVERYONE can enjoy the trail. SOME of you are ruining it for the responsible dog owners, you know.
i guess i’m torn my dog stays on leash always unless he is romping in the backyard…but other than sheer terror of dogs i don’t get people who don’t like dawgs
holy CHILL out. that’s like going to a bar and expecting there not to be drunk people there. theres gonna be dogs in an off-leash area. if you have a problem with them coming up and sniffing you go walk somewhere else, you’re allowed off your leash almost anywhere in halifax, aren’t you? well they’re not. (and don’t lie, i’m sure you’ve went and sniffed a few people without asking.) maybe learn not to be so uptight? sheesh…
Who ever that was…if you read the bitch pages, stay away from the Elmsdale area…everywhere is off leash out here !
my smell sense is the strongest but i try not to make it look obvious that i am sucking in their essence. go dogs
I love dogs and never had any problems with them approaching me in Shubie or PPP. I make sure that the owner gives me the OK that it is safe to pet them. Then I don’t mind if they sniff me out. I mean the dogs.
Some humans need to be on a leash.
Possibly in an ‘off leash for dogs’ area.
Anyone who is walking in an off leash area and doesn’t expect to have a dog near them is a moron. The OP’s dog didn’t bark, jump on or leg hump said moron he “sniffed”.
The “idiots” are not the dog owners they are the ones who get bent out of shape when they encounter an off leash dog in the off leash area…what’s the matter “dog”, “off” and “leash” are big confusing words for you?
How about…”don’t”, “walk” and “there” does that make more sense? It’s not like you don’t have options to walk…there are few off leash areas for dogs and you have the rest of the world to walk in…use it.
and just fyi…no I don’t own a dog, never have probably never will but I at least know if I don’t want to be near dogs…DON’T GO TO THE ONE AREA DESIGNATED FOR DOGS
If you don’t want to see dogs off leash, stay out of the off leash area, stick to the malls where you have your controlled environments and recycled air.
So, I should stay out of Point Pleasant Park because some people want their dogs to have more rights than I do? (For the record, I do not just go seek out off-leash parks where I know people are letting their dogs run around. I am talking about POINT PLEASANT PARK, which, last time I checked, was open to EVERYONE.)
No way. If your big drooly wet smelly dog runs towards me, growls at me or jumps up on me, he is going to get shooed away. And I DON’T CARE if your precious feelings are hurt! I am so sick of hearing “Oh, he just wants to play!” Who are you to encourage your dog to jump all over a stranger? I have rights that your dog doesn’t have, and I will exercise them. YOUR job is to apologize for YOUR behavior, and make sure it doesn’t happen again.
WHY is it so hard for people to keep their dogs AWAY from people who have no interest in them? I don’t hate your dog, I just choose not to be around them all the timea and I expect you to keep them under control.
Well I don’t like kids, can you keep them well behaved or kept on a leash please? If I know an area is a playground I stay out of there.
I’m just sayin!
Also, if someone encourages a dog to jump up on a person, they’re a moron. I am of the mind that humans are the pack leaders and it is disrespectful for a dog to put their paws on a person.
So in the end I do see both sides, bad parents should keep their kids away, bad dog owners should keep their dogs on a leash.
In all honesty, if you’re walking around Shubie Park and expecting to not get a dog snout up your rear, you really need to get your head examined.
Dogs are trainable, yes, but when you get a clusterfuck of them going, it’s like an elementary school playground. Especially a busy day at Shubie. Even if I didn’t like dogs, I wouldn’t yell at someone else’s dog because they came over to me.
A sniff? Excuse me, you’re dog just sniffed me, sniffed me real good.
Dogs are inherently social, they can’t ask ya how you’ve been, so they give ya a sniff. Find out what interesting smells you’ve run into lately.
Maybe a garlic supplement would help. She might give you a 10′ radius, maybe even 20.
on leash-off lease, big deal, if you can walk, thenwalk, and be done wih it all.
If the dog isnt growling and barking up a storm, then get over yourself. From the dogs point of view, they probabaly just see the opportunity to meet someone new and looking for as much attention as possible (not necessarily due to any lack of attention at home). stay off the off leash trails if you dont want a “slobbering infested flea bag” comming up to you. I wouldnt go into a designated smoking section and tell you to butt out because your polluting my air. dont come into an off leash section of the park and complain about a dog comming up and giving you a sniff sniff.
LOL If you don’t want to be sniffed up by dogs.. walk somewhere else. If the owner doesn’t call the dog back, then that is fine, deal with it. If you walk through there, you will suffer the consequences. MUHAHAA
The OB doesn’t sound out of control or trying to display dominance, but I’m sure they described the situation in their best light. Even so, I wonder how many would be comfortable having a large male rotweiler “sniff” them without it being given permission. If your dog is making an unwanted approach call it off. If you don’t I will deal with it, not a problem.
Dogs even in an off leash area has no right to intimidate others. It really is that simple.
uh ruby…. not all of PPP is off-leash (granted…. most is, but still).
stick to the leashed areas and we all win.

^The Off-Leash Rules for HRM.
And I garuntee that 99% of you dog owners don’t abide by them, so cram your self-righteous “my dog has as much right as you do” attitude up your backside.
I know that zZz . . . but it seems that OTHERS (ie certain dog owners) DON’T know this or they think they have a right to ignore the rules because they feel like it, and besides “Dogs like to play.”
I don’t begrudge people letting their dogs run around in the off-leash areas at all. But that doesn’t mean that uncontrolled dogs have free run of the entire park, or that their dog is allowed to threaten people, small children, other dogs, or destroy property.
Last time I was in PPP, a person with a gigantic dog was LAUGHING and saying “Good Boy! Good Boy!” as the dog clawed the paint off someone elses car. But oh, no, we passers-by aren’t allowed to SAY anything because that would be “mean” to the owner (Boo, hoo, hoo they might feel “judged”), and anyway in their mind “the dog’s right to play” supercedes ALL other rights, doesn’t it?
I do not advocate cruelty to any animal, and I certainly understand that it is wrong to have a dog cooped up and not let him socialize and play, but that doesn’t mean that a dog can be left completely to his own devices. Human beings have the right to set some limitations on their behavior.
Im sorry, weren’t we talking about the no leash area??? Who here said it was ok for the dogs to roam the entire park freely. If you stay in the leash area and a dog is off the leash by all means, freak if you wanna. But if you venture into the no leash area, suck it up and stfu…
i like the ‘please don’t take your bitch if she is in heat’ no fecking kidding
Cujo?
I am in Shubie park almost everyday and often walk in the off leash area and I have never had an issue with any of the dogs. There great actually but just like the moron who does not like dogs there are dog owner morons as well. Many times I have been jumped on by a big filthy pawed dog in the on leash area and the moron dog owner just plays dumb. It goes both ways.
Hey RubyJane, here provided for your convenience, is a document with a very clear map of the leash only, and off leash areas in PPP. If you dislike dogs so much, maybe you can stay in the leash only areas, or maybe out of the park altogether. If I’m there with my dog and he comes and sniffs you, good for him, and too bad for you. By walking in the off leash areas you are taking whats called an assumed risk, of encountering dogs that are off their leash, and being sniffed. In case you didn’t know, it is nearly impossible to stop a dog who wants to smell you from doing so when you are walking past them. A dogs sense of smell is their strongest sense and it is impulsive for them to use it.
