Guess what? I know not a lot of people are going to want to hear this, but not ALL politicians are crooks. Some are for damn sure, but many are not. Some people get into politics for the most honourable of reasons…to help their fellow man.
I’ve never run for office. But I have worked for lots of people who have. Just like the rest of the people on earth, some are lazy, shiftless, thieves. But it’s been my experience that just as many aren’t. I worked for a provincial cabinet minister who took the bus to his constituency rather than use his car allowance. The most expensive thing on his expense claim was a receipt for a personal pan pizza, he worked in soup kitchens in his free time, and the guy worked 15 hours a day, every single day for years. Cynicism is the easiest thing in the world. No one’s going to give you crap for saying “Damn them, they’re all friggen crooks!” It’s like shooting fish in a barrel, but don’t delude yourself into thinking it’s a thoughtful and incisive commentary on the true state of the world. AND that kind of lazy, mean-spirited attitude isn’t going to make good people want to run for office. —Fed Up with the People Who are Fed Up

Hear hear! Totally agree. I also hate when people generalize about police all being assholes. Some are, that’s for sure. But there’s a ton that do their job because they like to help people, and do the best they can with little thanks from the public.
PREACH. I personally know a few politicians – MLA, counsellors, etc that truly try to make difference to their communities and aren’t “lying crooks.” Same can be said for the police force – there are always a few bad apples in any institution, but that doesn’t mean the whole institution should be painted with that stereotypical and biased brush!
Absolutely correct. A surprisingly large number of politicians are too stupid and/or lazy to be dishonest.
as history has proven many times before, polititions will all feed at the trough, if given time. if they are not crooks when they start out, by the time their term is finished, they will be. and i dare you to give me just one example, of a real honest to goodness, non crook politition.
you just can’t do it, and don’t give me that honest abe bullshit, he cheated on his bar exam, before he became a president. there is not one in recorded history, that is/was/will be totally honest.
Somewhere I read its impossible to be honest in a dishonest system. So all the good intentions in the world isn’t going to do any good if the system you are participating in is fucked up.
Now if those so called good politicians would band together (& I’m not afraid of saying I’m willing to put money on the fact they will not be numerous, so it will be a small band )
& reufse to be a part of a system that isn’t working or is unfair.
For example –
That if everyone who works doesn’t get a free parking spot & a free car & gas card….then our elected officials don’t deserve a free car & gas card & their private spot!
IT AIN’T NEVER GONNA HAPPEN ! ! ! !
They are going to take those perks & very quickly come to the realization ….they “deserve them” & BANG ! you’ve just lost one of the minority in the ‘band’ ~;p

nice.
When you’re exposed to scandal after scandal after scandal, you can see why we’re skeptical. Used to just be ‘oops, my bad, I resign’ and it’s forgotten….
it’s nice to see actual legal cases coming about for those in power that abuse their entitlement. You sure can pay the cash back… and have it on your criminal record as well. Don’t want a record, DON’T FUCKING STEAL. I’m still not sure why they get all those perks too… gas, cars, housing, etc… sure you’re working for the people but really, in this day and age, fuck keeping up with the Benjamins.
(Oda… that was for you, bitch)
Any thoughts, Mclean?
Power has a tendency to corrupt. It takes a unique individual to be able overcome the urge to exploit their office. I believe there are lot of those people out there. The bad eggs tend to attract all the media attention hence our attention.
I also believe that politicians are held to an impossible standard by our media. People screw up, we all do. Elected officials feel like they have to be evasive about any mistakes they make because they know they will be crucified.
as it is always said o.p.,” absolute power, corrupts absolutely. and don’t we all have a history of that in canada, and especially, the u.s. of assholes.
No, all politicians are CROOKS; as are all police ASSHOLES. These are pre-requisites for these positions.
“I also believe that politicians are held to an impossible standard by our media. “
If you mean they actually just report how good politicians have it compared to the rest of us shlubs, then they’re guilty I suppose.
Though why do they have it so well off???
Pretty much only because the politicians past made it that way.
