The HPV vaccine costs $140-$180 a shot? A little pricy but not too bad… wait… per shot? For three shots!? So it’s $420-$540 for this dirt poor 23-just-out-of-university grad (with no parental support or health coverage) to take the preventative measures against cervical cancer recommended by her doctor. I try really hard to be responsible and take care of my health but the price of this vaccine makes it impossible. They give it away for free to gradeschool girls all across Canada, but if you happen to have been born too early (even though it’s recommended for all women under 26 years of age) you have to choose between groceries/rent and possible cancer. Poor women and parents with young daughters can’t afford to not get cancer, how fucked up is that? —Sorry, cervix

life is a bitch, and you just stated it here honey.
you think you’re discriminated against….
I didn’t see them giving it out to any males either????
and btw

Pay attention to some of the capitol health vaccine research studies. Last year they had a research study on gardasil. You would either get the vaccine or a placebo and they would test the level of protection in your blood. At the end of the study if you were given the placebo you would be given the gardasil. You get monthly bloodwork, free vaccination and a slight monetary incentive. Just keep an eye out on this page for upcoming studies.

Actually, I’ve been told that it works for people over 26, but they’re only giving it to those 26 or under.
When it first came out I was 26 and by the time I was interested in getting it, I had just turned 27 and was over the cut off.
FFS.
Heck, a Apple 64GB 4th Generation iPod Touch is only $430. I guess pharmaceutical companies need to make money too.
There is absolutely no link between health and a 64GB iPod.. (who the heck needs 64GB anyway?!) And the fact that big pharmaceutical companies “need” to make money isn’t the issue, the issue is, IMO, that it should be covered under MSI for everyone.
zZz, do you have a cervix? Men don’t. Holy. Idiots.
I didn’t know it costed so much! That is absolutely ridiculous. Per shot… I am still in shock. Tee, I agree with you about the MSI comment.
I am lucky my health insurance comes with the job at my company, but for everyone else… I guess the bottom line is, that is how much the government cares about the spread of STD’s, and the start of cancer.
Given the current tenor of the times, I’m surprised anyone is getting gardasil for free.
Conservative groups south of the border have mounted a campaign against providing this vaccine to girls BEFORE they become sexually active (ie preteens) on the grounds that it will encourage immoral behaviour.
Since the government and medical profession in Canada both support widespread free inoculation programs to counter communicable diseases which are far less of a threat than HPV, for example measles and mumps, one wonders why they don’t also support a similar program against HPV.
Hey, I can’t even get my insulin (either of them) covered under MSI’s family pharmacare program. So I’m forced to use another intermediate acting insulin that gives me severe lows on a daily basis because i can’t afford the other insulin (and it’s either that or, you know, DIE), and even though my doctor and endocrinologist says I need rapid insulin, and has submitted the necessary paperwork for the exeption status drug, the province’s “administrators” feel it unnecessary. You know what *I* find “unnecessary”? Having a reading in the 20s because I didn’t take any rapid insulin when I ate.
So I get to shell out the cash for that shit, which isn’t exactly cheap and when there’s no reason in the world it shouldn’t be covered, considering it helps me stay ALIVE.
Meanwhile, they cover birth control pills.
So not covering this vaccine really don’t suprise me in the least.
Did you even read the article z3 posted, jenn?
This not-so-current tenor says, the best way to prevent STD’s is not abstinence, but gluttony.

gardasil can prevent anal cancer in men.
Just so we’re clear here, everybody knows that this vaccine only prevent 4 out of 35 types of HPV that affect the genitals and reproductive organs, and does not, in fact, prevent cervical cancer, right? It merely reduces risk. It’s still entirely possible that, after shelling out your bucks to Merck, you get HPV or cervical cancer at some point. I’m sure I’ll be flamed for pointing this out, but I just find it maddening that this vaccine continues to be misrepresented as a some sort of cancer vaccine.
Contracting HPV very rarely leads to cervical cancer, and in developed nations, having cervical cancer very rarely leads to death. The best way to prevent cervical cancer is by getting regular Pap tests to detect abnormal cell changes, and if detected, having them removed. Not really a big deal. Yet our gov’t has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to vaccinate school age girls with a vaccine that has not, in my opinion, undergone sufficient trials or proven sufficiently necessary for widespread vaccinations. And people are so easily terrified by any mention of STDS or the Big C that they can’t wait to line up their daughters for an injection. It’s ludicrous.
Hey PK – I have a crap load of Novo Rapid in my fridge if it would be of any use to you.
Seriously? That would be amazing!
Seriously, boxes and box of it 🙂 Send me an email to mandy_joe@hotmail.com and we’ll figure out a way for you to get it.
It’s probably more affordable to eliminate the risk factor for HPV…you know, sexual intercourse. If you can’t afford the safety, what is the point of take the vehicle out of the garage for a spin when you know there could be a problem? The high rate of infection suggests that too many people are cruising around unprotected. You only get one chance at life. Are you not worth more than the risk?
Get your paps! Have safe sex! Stop thinking there’s a miracle cure out there when it’s just not proven yet. It’s unfortunate, but c’est la vie.
Wow, everyone thinks everything should be given for free. Get over it. Talk to the guy who pays for his own private insurance on top of his provinical health care and still can’t afford to get his Cancer medication.
Why didn’t you get the shot when you were still in school and had coverage for it, since you are a recent grad. Didn’t think of that, get private insurance and pay for it that way. Don’t expect everything for free beacuse it can help PREVENT cancer, it doesn’t heal anything, not nessecary that my tax dollars pay for it
i would rather see my tax dollars go going for free insulin and stuff like this. instead of fucking stupid areas and convention centers.
also, why should we, as canadians, be footing the bill for that stupid fiasco in afghanistan and iraq? and then, pouring money out to these poor countries, that have a dictatorship.
hmmm, second hand prescription passing through a message board…
that’s a little fishy. I don’t think I’d inject that on principle alone.
and ya… jenn?!?!?! wtf?
Me0w,
Thank you for the clarification.
I wouldnt get that shot for my lifeeee.. my friend got it and her paps are coming up as false positives.. but what will happen to her next, who knows!
If what I’ve been taught is correct, I think it’s in your best interest to get the vaccine at some point, price tag or not.
Ummmm… All of a sudden women need to get a vaccine that claims to reduce the risk of cancer, HPV, etc…
My question is this: What types of diseases & disorders (physical and psychological) will they tell us this vaccine causes in 20 years?
My advice to OP and to other women out there who choose to jump on the bandwagon of getting every vaccine and pill that comes out because the “government tells them to” is to do a little research. There’s a reason for increased instances of asthma, autism, and other issues over the past number of years. Don’t be so quick to think that a quick fix to health issues is the answer. Eat healthy, exercise and keep your mind healthy and you will be doing yourself more good than taking a vaccine.
I mean, that is a good point. As far as I know it is a fairly new vaccine. There really is not enough long term testing done on it.
“increased instances of asthma, autism, and other issues ” no no no. This is what I do with my life, asthma, not linked to the vaccine. More so to sanitation and parasite exposure. Autism more closely linked to older ladies having babies. One paper (since disproven) tarnished the whole sport.
Long term testing … who do you propose we do it on?
Good grief, get the vaccine. There’s nothing in there to kill you.
Man, don’t even get me fucking started on the anti-vaccine movement.
Brendon, are you saying that Jenny McCarthy lacks scientific credibility? Cold Bra, that’s just stone cold that is. *Rawk!*
“There’s a reason for increased instances of asthma, autism, and other issues over the past number of years.”
BUNK!
There is NO like between autism and the MMR vaccine. This is misinformation that has KILLED children!
Athsma? That’s a new one, link me the peer reviewed scientific studies if you can.

“Eat healthy, exercise and keep your mind healthy and you will be doing yourself more good than taking a vaccine.”
Tell that to all the people who have been crippled by polio, what’s that? You don’t know anyone who’s been crippled by polio? That’s because we have a polio vaccine, dumbass.
No amount of “Eating healthy, exercising and keeping your mind healthy” is going to keep a newborn infant from dying after contracting whooping cough from an vaccinated adult or child.
*unvaccinated adult or child
I mean, yeah there may not being anything in the vaccine that would kill you. I was just agreeing with the lack of long-term studies. The bottom line is, there’s so much debate about everything in ingest without even including vaccines and whether or not it causes health issues. Is coffee good for you, or is it causing cancer? Is a glass of red wine good for you or does it cause alternative health issues. Is meat okay to eat, or is all the hormones and chemicals they pump into the animals really harming humans? Nobody can really say and fully guarantee.
Just out of curiosity I looked up the side effects of gardasil, and found:
a general feeling of discomfort or illness
cough
diarrhea
dizziness
fever
headache
joint pain
nausea and vomiting
pain, swelling, itching, or redness at the place of injection
stuffy nose
toothache
trouble sleepin
–http://chealth.canoe.ca/drug_info_details.…
So I find it interesting you think this vaccine is harmless when these side effects were obviously reported after taking it. Just saying.
Jenn, you should have seen my sorry ass after getting a Yellow Fever shot, most of what you listed, with the shakes.
