So I’ve been living where I’m living for the last 2 years, and for some reason the last few weeks, they haven’t been taking my recyclables.

Now for 2 years I’ve been recycling the same way I’ve always done, separating my bottles and cans from all my cardboard. I use clear plastic bags for both so the pick up guys can differentiate between the two. Now it’s already a pain in the ass to recycle to begin with, but I do it because of environmental reasons to help the planet and whatnot, but the last 2 weeks they haven’t been taking them and I haven’t changed how I recycle, so now I have a huge collection of cardboard and assorted bottles and cans that I can’t do anything with, or can I?….

So fuck the planet and fuck Halifax and fuck your idea of recycling all is going in black garbage bags from now on. Fuck You very much!

  1. The rules are too complicated. I was told to use only blue bags and to put everything recyclable in it. I don’t have to sort it all out….if it’s recyclable, it’s in the bag. Recycling is just a pain in the ass. Why can’t the city hire the bums and panhandlers to do it?

  2. Yeah, they’ve stopped collecting garbage too. WM will not return calls. There is a business opportunity in garbage collection here. The city has dropped the ball. People will be willing to pay soon. I’ve got a system to ensure I only get my customer’s garbage collected, no freeloaders, guaranteed. Anybody want to buy it? The idea is worth at least $150K.

  3. And in the time I took to write this stupid bitch, I could have called somebody and perhaps done something about the problem, but I chose not to. Fuck you planet!

  4. green cart pick up is every week til sept. garbage every second week. if you put out cardboard, even one piece you have to tie it up? DISCLAIMER: i don’t work for za city

  5. This actually happened to me as well OP. I would separate my bottles from cardboard and they always took it. Then they stopped taking the cardboard….now I throw everything in the garbage, except bottles still, because bums will take those in 2 seconds. Whenever they left the bag of recyclables, I would just put a garbage bag over it and then they took it ;D.

  6. Edmonton now, apparently, has the most advanced waste management system in North America – all the recycling and compost is separated from other trash at their fancy new waste separation facility so you don’t have to! It feels weird throwing a banana peel in the regular garbage then, but now I know I need not worry as it will be going to a better place in the end.

  7. I always assumed everyone’s recyclables were rummaged through by hobos and crackheads. I never have a problem with cans and bottles being left behind.

  8. Is there a rejection sticker on your bag? If there is, it should specify why it was rejected. If not, you can call Waste Management (easiest way is to just call the city call centre) and talk to them about it. They may have just missed you.

I moved a few months back and my driveway is on one street but the front of my house is on another street. The previous home owners put their garbage on the house facing side, I put mine on the driveway side. Because of this the compost people missed me a BUNCH over the past while. It eventually got fixed, but then last week I was missed again. I called, and they came to my house THAT DAY and emptied my compost bin for me. They’re not all bad, really.

If you are unsure of how to properly recycle, calling the city hotline and asking for the flyer works, or you can just print it off right from the city website. I have mine taped to the place where I store my recyclables because neither of my tennants actually know how to properly sort the recycleables.

Anyway, all I’m saying is to give them a call, look into it and fix whatever was the issue before. Easy.

  9. bookfast: Recycleables can go out EVERY WEEK, regardless of whether it is green bin or garbage day. And as another commenter said, you can put your green bin out every week until September.

  10. Cardboard must be tied up, and not in a bag.
recyclables must be in a blue bag (not a clear bag)
Newspapers go in grocery type bags
Not hard to follow these rules, what is it that the OP doesn’t get.

  11. How do you get them to take garbage? Put a cookie and a bow on it?

Seriously, I would pay for someone to collect my garbage. (The transfer station is a long walk from here and I don’t think they want me to take it on the bus)

As it is, I let it accumulate for a month, then make a guerilla garbage run on local businesses and parks. Fucking crazy shit.

Maybe we need the military to do it? The city seems unable.

  12. You gave up a 2 year recycling habit after 2 weeks of no recycle pick up?
To me, that sounds like major LAZY.
It’s not like it’s stinky garbage. Just put it out again.
    Duh.
Way to help the planet and whatnot.
