I’d like to bitch about the fact that the homeless took this long to figure out that there’s free camping by City Hall. Apparently all you have to do is say that you’re protesting something that you know will never change. So you just set up your tent and stick a sign outside saying “protesting social inequality”. Free camping for life, close to the good begging spots and all amenities. Why pay $1200 a month to live downtown when City Hall is giving it away for free? Who was the genius who neglected to make a “no camping on public property” bylaw? Seems like a rather obvious thing to do. Not one bum ever tried that before? Probably did but the cops just dragged him away. Cops are getting lazy these days. Tent cities are an eyesore and a sign of lack of proper government administration. —JJ

  1. I totally agree OB. Those protesters are abusing the use of a public space. They don’t have jobs, they don’t pay taxes, they should not be allowed to camp there.

  2. Yes the cops should not waste their time, with all the shootings, stabbings, swarmings, drug busts snd stuntings, but should spend time dragging away this lot. FFS, op

  3. You are obviously completely missing the point. But more importantly, you are blaming police officers for this? Please stay in school, you are a fool.

  4. I have always considered it camping if there is no room service.
tent, trailer, bus, camp etc…if there’s no one going to bring me a paper, breakfast & the shower isn’t in the next room (with a flush toilet) its camping & I only do that if I’ve got a rifle & there’s a chance of grilling meat later .

  5. Bylaw P-600

    Camping
8 (1) Camping is prohibited in a park unless otherwise posted or by permission.
    (2) No person shall erect or place in a park any thing for the purpose of temporary or
    permanent accommodation without permission.

  6. I thought the same thing when I drove by the hobo city set up at Victoria Park this morning. None of them were awake though – so no people around; just tents.

  7. Imagine sitting down to a hearty breakfast at the place that rhymes with Titties and feasting your eyes on the tenting filthy scummers.

  8. That would be the only time I would willingly play Parachite Club’s insipid Knee-dipper anthem “Rise Up”. @ 0-Dark-Thirty, with the car stereo set to 11.

  9. They’re living outside my house now… 🙁

Every day i walk to work.. in crippling pain from spinal damage but off i go, every day. And i walk by their retarded shantytown and think about how 30% of what i earn is taken from me to house these dumbasses. And how, at the same fucking time, they’re apparently doing this to benefit people like me.

    I feel arsony..

  10. “I feel arsony..”
As in, You want to grab the cunt with bongo drums and kick his fucking arse-in?

  11. Grand Parade is not zoned ‘Park’.

    It is zoned ‘ICO’.

Victoria Park is zoned ‘Park’ and the bylaw quoted by ‘Barrington Street porthole’ applies.

  12. Soooooo you basically want them to occupy police headquarters…
    okay….
now you’ve granted them a bed and food…. on our dime.
    nice one.
why can’t we sell lots for this?
and then keep raising the rent fee…..

  13. If you can afford a 1200 apartment downtown, then I’d say your probably on the upper end of the 99%. You probably have no idea what it is to go without and you have the audacity to complain about citizens taking advantage of their democratic right. People with Money should be scared, they’re in the minority and can’t be protected forever. It’s about time they pay their share, maybe then people won’t have to ‘camp” downtown.

  14. “People with Money should be scared, they’re in the minority and can’t be protected forever. It’s about time they pay their share, maybe then people won’t have to ‘camp” downtown.”

You know who doesn’t pay their share? People who refuse to look for work and live off social assistance!

When you’re in a higher tax bracket, you pay a higher percentage of taxes. You actually pay MORE than the average person, but you don’t get more for it.

  15. ajdube – Highfield Park has 1 bedroom apt of 595 sq ft for $599 including heat & hot water. Next to the bus terminal and with ‘everything you need for easy, comfortable living is just minutes away. You will find a number of excellent schools, parks and community centres within walking distance – ideal for families, seniors and working professionals alike. ” according to the promo materials. 2 bedrooms for another $100

You and a buddy could share the rent and live quite well.

  16. Also I think I read somewhere that someone who makes like $300 000 is still considered to be in the 99%. So no, people that can afford $1200 are not in the 1%. People want to pay $200 a month for an apartment downtown and think anything more isn’t “fair”.

  17. There’s nothing nobler than the oppressed classes, until you have to dodge their random gunfire.

  18. Sell your shit, quit your job, move out of your apartment and get a tent, go to parade square and live for free then if you think it’s so glamourous. I for one don’t happen to think that living in a tent with no shower, heat or electricity is a domicile alternative. There are some homeless people jumping on the bandwagon and claiming to be part of a protest. Big deal, does that mean that social inequality doesn’t exist? Does that mean that all the people there are homeless? In any situation there is a percentage of undesirables that attach themselves, this doesn’t diminish their message. I think in this case that “homeless” or “jobless” people actually illustrates their point about social inequality and corporate greed. I believe they have made their point already, but hey, if they want to spend the winter in a tent to drive home their message I won’t begrudge them their tenacity.

  19. It seems that London Ont is the first place to actually start uprooting the filth and making them scurry back to their rat holes, hopefully Halifax will jump in soon – oh I forgot we’re under the control of Mr. Rule by Consultants.

  20. SHITD – If corporations are ‘greedy’ it is fair to say they are ‘greedy’ because pension funds rely on them being ‘greedy’.
They rely on ‘greed’ to pay the dividends to pay the pensions of teachers, nurses, firefighters and millions of paper shufflers.

Public sector pension funds can vote their conscience at the AGM of every ‘greedy’ corporation.

Will Kyle Buott lead the march to each AGM ?

  21. Maybe instead of campingout, doing nothing and whining about the ‘haves’ they should work on becoming ‘haves’ themselves. Now, my match sucks. I don’t earn enough to be in the one percent, so that leaves me in the 99 percent. It seems I don’t agree with this little group of people who can’t figure out exactly why they are there in a municipal lot / park / public space protesting, generically, that the rich banks are making a killing off the poorest and that rich corporations pay subsistence wages and also oppress the poor. Hey. I’ve got an idea. Why not move your protest to the bank lobbies? That way you won’t be such an eyesore on our green spaces. By the way, the tent city also smells a little bit….

  22. I wonder…
I can’t really think offhand of ANY reason a homeless person wouldn’t be staying with the protesters…. though how many of the panhandlers ‘down on their luck’ are actually staying there?
and how many are going to their nice, warm homes/apartments after leeching all day…

  23. Actually joeblow, investment companies invest pension funds in corporations as a bet that they will do well. There is a difference in being profitable and raping the workers of as much as possible in order to show record profits for shareholders year after year. Public pensions are handled differently and when the stocks or investments perform poorly, the government takes tax dollars to boost the principle. When you sign on with the government, it is in your contract on day one what you will receive in pension benefits, but in the private sector you get dividends on how your investment performs. Huge difference.

As far as I know public pensioners cannot vote in any corporations AGM, I think you mean “share holders”, and the amount of clout you have is directly represented by how many shares you control.

  24. When you look at how banks can ‘create money’ by simply giving you a loan, which simply ‘creates money’ that actually doesn’t exist.
It is ‘created by your promise to pay with interest’…wait you pay them back the money you borrowed with interest to them, but they have no actual money except your ‘note ! Its criminal…if you or I tried to do that we would be arrested.
Its IMO even more criminal that they can charge high interest on loans, yet if you have any money in the bank…go see if they’ll give you prime plus 1 % for it !
Your lucky if you can even get a half a percentage point on thousands of your dollars in their vaults
This so called money is a fiat currency,it is backed by nothing… they can lend out 10 dollars for every dollar they supposedly have as assets…& they can call your money in a savings account part of their assets & loan out on it.
Its a fucking scam that if any of us tried it…it would be loan sharking, & we would be arrested, charged & jailed !

The other major problem with the big corporate companies, is they can do whatever destructive business they wish & as long as they are ‘hiring people’, they can pollute on a massive scale, but like NS Power who have ‘guaranteed profits’ do not have to cut into their profit to clean up the damn mess they are making. AND
They want to go greener & want (fuck want they are) raising rates we pay for power to build their new systems ! WTF are we all stupid, we’re paying now ,for them to make even more money later ! all in the name of ‘greener clean energy’ are you fucking all stupid & can’t see that is wrong ?

I’ve got no problem with big business making money, but they shouldn’t be allowed to do it with workers who never become full time employees. For example the large grocery stores should only be allowed , 1 part time employee for every 2 full time employees. Some of these stores have 90% of the store employees are part time, some are there for years, working full time hours but becasue they are classified ‘part time’ they get no benefits, its Bullshit ! They shouldn’t be able to pollute, because it cuts into profit. The people who are responsible for all the work being done should be able to get benefits, a pension for when they retire after spending their working life building & keeping a business up & runnning. Just because the CEO is at the top…Let see that person do everything necessary to keep the company running smoothly. It isn’t possible, but they sure swagger around like its all about them ! I’ve got no problem with bonuses, but does anyone else find it odd that only the few at the top get massive bonuses, & the people responsible for keeping their dept running smoothly should be fucking happy they got a job !

That is bullshit & that is IMO a huge problem with our present system. That & the fact we no longer have money…we have colourful promisary notes that are backed by nothing & are actually not worth anything.
Bring back a gold /silver based monitary system…because that will go a long way to giving us a system that doesn’t constantly have ups & downs…so long as Laws are passed that NO – Government or Banks are allowed to control it, they are hands off & have to let the free market system do its job & they cannot print billions of ounces of silver & gold certificates…Unless they actually have GOLD & SILVER IN A VAULT TO BACK EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF SCRIPT. Final piece of the puzzle is get rid of privately owned central banks (all of them are run for profit off the backs of working men & women & other tax payers ) Even the Bank of Canada , is the 13th district in the Central Banks of North America !
President Abraham Lincoln had the right idea, to take control of a nations currency away from the banks…they killed him, Pres Jackson tried to keep control of the monitary system from the banks he was assasinated, John F Kennedy tried to remove the Central banking system from private hands & put it back in the control of the Nations Government..assasinated…it ain’t rocket surgery boys & girls.
& it isn’t a conspiracy theory when people trying to do the same thing end up the same way !

  25. Wow……um…….just..wow.
    2 questions More:
    1. What THE HELL are you smoking? and;
    2. Where can I get some?

  26. I believe you can get some in Victoria Park ;D I walked by there yesterday and no joke, all I could hear was coughing.

  27. That’s a really good point about the camping law:) You can’t even walk on the grass at the public gardens or toast marshmallows in Lawrencetown, so why wouldn’t they have a law about camping in Public Memorials? Good point indeed:)

  28. They shut the power off to Victoria Park. I didn’t even realise they had power in that park, but whatever. The campers are complaining now because “how will we keep warm?!” I suggest going back inside over night and returning if you must, the next day. I don’t think it’s such a good idea to have a bunch of heaters, computers, lights, and turntables plugged into a few outlets. I live near there too, and would be pissed if my power kept going out because of the overload. I think this is the only time I’ve been excited for winter. What were they planning to do when we had a really bad snow storm? They would probably end up getting stuck under piles of snow and suffocate in their tents! They seem to be pretty heavy sleepers too. I drive by there each morning around 7:30 on a loud bus and I don’t see any movement. Has anyone heard about Occupy Whitehorse? Teehee, it’s just one guy.

  29. we have used that park for charity events, and we plugged in an amp. i took a loop around this morning, didn’t see people but lots of tents. please keep your signs off robbie

  30. @ Paingirl & Starrydays: Wow some of you speak like I’m one of the people out there protesting. FYI .. I was lucky enough to come from a family with Money and I still think that the wealthy should be paying more. My father NEVER allowed himself or my mother to spoil us and we were expected to go down and get our hands dirty just like any other employee in my fathers company. SO, I have an idea of what it is to have work ethic and money in my pocket. Do any of you actually know the unbelievably crooked tax loop holes available to the wealthy? It’s disgusting and even I don’t believe its happening. For Christ sake, when you have a man like Warren Buffet (Richest Guy in the world) standing up to his government and saying … “TAX ME, YOU SHOULD BE” … then you know without a doubt, there’s a serious greed problem in North America!
