Why does everyone around here just follow the crowd when it comes to opinions? Nova Scotia needs progress but we can’t progress because people go apeshit for the common opinion! Read the actual research and evidence! Fracking would help our province’s economy and has been proven to be safe. Come on people! —Sick of it

  1. Sweet, looks like we have our first volunteer to take the 30 million litres of fracking waste water that has been stuck in Debert for the last couple of years. Please post your address and we’ll send the trucks right to you, free of charge, ol’ buddy ol’ pal. You can bathe your children in it and, use the rest to water your lawn. My guess is that in 20 years when we’re buying fresh, clean water, it won’t be as “good for our economy” as you thought it was.

Science is not an opinion, the rich people who want to get richer on our backs telling us that fracking is “good for our economy” is. Idiot!!!!!

  2. CONCEPTUAL SLIPPAGE

“Why does everyone around here just follow the crowd when it comes to opinions”? Sick of it

“opinion, n. – Judgement or belief based on grounds short of proof, provisional conviction, view held as probable.” The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English

Is the bitcher’s judgement as to why everyone around here just follows the crowd when it comes to opinions itself based on grounds short of proof? Is his belief itself little more than a provisional conviction? Is it a view held only as probable? In other words, is the bitcher’s claim that everyone around here just follows the crowd when it comes to opinions itself little more than an opinion? Is there sefl-refutation here? Is there conceptual slippage?

    A pleasure as always.

    Cheerio!

  3. And you cross referenced your sources, right OB?

Anyone can make shit up. Even oil and gas companies and people will sell out and say whatever the fuck for a pay cheque. Even science!

Hay SHITTY – I’m sure OB can just brita that waste water! Drinking water for years!

  4. OB … just like to point out your link to independent scientific evidence (not produced by oil companies) on how safe fracking is & how the waste pollution generated in the process, will make a tasty topping on our breakfast cereals.
DIDN’T POST , please send it in a comment to this thread , thank you.

OK, I don’t expect the sludge will be edible…but your ‘perfectly safe’ comment has to be verified.

  5. I’d like you to show me all the long-term studies done on fracking that shows it to be “safe”. People who think it’s safe are the people who think they’re just pumping water into the ground, instead of a medley of chemicals. I am not from Nova Scotia, and because of that I can say that this province is one of the most progressed provinces in this country AND I LOVE HALIFAX!! Everything is so environmentally friendly here, it’s the top priority in many decisions made. Do you realize how huge that is? Let me tell you something, if we don’t have an environment, we don’t have an economy. What happens when the oil from fracking runs out? What then? It’s sad that the terrible things we’re doing to the environment has to hit the economy before we realize what we’re doing. Putting a hold on fracking was one of the best things done yet, keep doing what you’re doing Nova Scotia, fight for a better planet.

  6. CONCEPTUAL SLIPPAGE (II): MORE EMPTY OPINIONS

Hmm, does the same apply to the commenters?

    : Stephen Harper (8:57AM)

No proof there. Just the usual hot blow. Nothing there.

    : Bad dog Molly (10:04AM)

How is it the question a matter of logic? Nothing there.

    : The Monstercock (12:30PM)

No proof, no provisional conviction. Nothing there .

    : Natasha Hynes (1:04PM)

A lot of arm-waving there but no proof, little more than personal/provisional conviction. Nothing there.

    : BabyFish Mouth (2:13PM)

    Irelevant and incoherent. Nothing there.

Yep, a lot of conceptual slippage among the commenters as well.

    A pleasure as always.

    Cheerio!

  7. Sorry, forgot More (12:32PM) .

As there was no link to any “independent scientific evidence (not produced by oil companies) on how safe fracking is” etc.etc., More must be snorting his breakfast cereal topping. In any case, nothing there.

  8. Surprised you haven’t been chased out of the province yet. What you fail to realize is that anything that has the potential to improve the sad state of affairs around here is by default the unpopular choice. If there was a way that singing nuns on white horses could turn the state of affairs around here, we would shit all over them too. It’s just the way we are out east. We like to complain and we love misery. Those who don’t like it? we move.

  9. Your schtick is tired, MM. Barely even worth a response. **YAWN**

You would think that someone with your educational fortitude would actually have an opinion, not just criticism of those that are confident enough to hold one.

  10. LOL! I was going to argue that we do indeed have singular minds and differing opinions (as usually evidenced here), but then I read what my co-commentors have posted… thank god I avoided the Koolaid!

Well yes, Ut (may I call you “Ut?”) I have noticed that but is your choice also the unpopular one by default? Or do you have reasons for your unpopular choice? What might these reasons be? It is a rational decision? Write back soon.

    : Stephen Harper (8:59PM)

My “shtick?” What is my “shtick?” In any case Stephen, you clearly have misunderstood my point. What was that point? My point was that the substantive issue of “fracking” is vexed – there does not appear presently to be any clearly definitive answer in respect to its effects. That being so, my approach was to scrutinize the epistemological foundation of the commenters’ opinions – maybe that’s my “shtick!” – since opinions were all that remained. This I did in my usual masterful fashion, employing the criteria contained in my opening quotation and, sadly, found them all to be wanting – including yours. Only one thing Stephen: If you’re going to yawn please take a few Chlorets beforehand. Thanks for that.

  12. Is there an echo in here? Back in the eighties when Canada and the US were negotiating a free trade agreement the fearmongers were up in arms about our drinking water. A group, called something like the Council of Cranky Old Ladies, was warning us in no uncertain terms and with absolute conviction that once the agreement was signed American companies would come to remove every last drop of drinking water and take to back to the USA. Meanwhile, free trade proponents were promising a nirvana of wealth and jobs for all. In the end the free trade agreement did prove to be a bit of an advantage for Canada but nothing miraculous. And nobody showed up to siphon off all of our drinking water as the fearmongers had promised.

The current debate about fracking vs resource development has many parallels. The fearmongers use a combination of psuedoscience, superstition and ignorance to frighten us. The reality is that fracking has been used extensively and, from all I have read, safely in places like Saskatchewan so there is no reason why we can’t do the same. It needs to be regulated like any other industry – many of which currently pose a far greater risk to drinking water, by the way. On the other hand, the economic benefits if we did find gas would likely be modest. So, people need to quit getting their nickers in knot over fracking. It’s neither demon nor savious for Nova Scotia. And we need to focus on the many more pressing problems we have.

  13. BDM at 11/12/2014 at 2:07 PM: regarding drinking water being sucked out of Canada

Thank you. That link supports my point that American companies can’t just come in and take drinking water as was feared back in the days before free trade. Provincial governments have the power to say yes or no depending on their own risk/benefit analysis.

  14. If Canada has the most fresh water why can’t we share? We exploit China for our commercial goods while they’re left polluted and poor, but that’s ok. We exploit every coffee growing country to our own advantages, but that’s ok too. Then we continue to exploit any country with a fishing/farming industry while their people are once again left polluted and poor, but that’s still ok. Then we continue to exploit any country that will benefit us with their agriculture, and yup, that’s still ok.

Get your heads out of your asses.

  15. We had plans for a network of water pipelines across the nation but the EAC and its brethren protested because accidental spills would cause flooding and destroy everything.

  16. CONCEPTUAL SLIPPAGE (III): STILL MORE EMPTY OPINIONS

“Is the bitcher’s claim that everyone around here just follows the crowd when it comes to opinions itself little more than an opinion based on grounds short of proof? : ZippyZigZag (11/12, 12:06PM)

“The fearmongers use a combination of pseudoscience, superstition and ignorance to frighten us.”

Who are these fearmingers? Which part of the combination of pseudoscience, superstition and ignorance predominates or are all three evenly balanced? Can you distinguish pseudoscience from “real science”? Would you do it now?

    : Bad dog Molly (2:07PM)

Who are the “wellingtonwaterwatchers”? Why do you believe them?

    : ZippyZigZag (3:22PM)

Could you support that claim about provincial control over drinking water? Have you ever seen a provincial “risk/benefit analysis”? What if the source of the water extends over several provinces? What has your claim got to do with fracking?

    : Furious Chico Styles (4:27PM)

Could you support your claim that Nova Scotia has banned fracking? Did it do a “risk/benefit analysis?” Could you produce it?

    : Nukka (6:34PM)

You must stop your self-lacerating. Besides, what has it got to do with fracking? (Is your head up your ass?)

    : Dim Bro Tim (7:45PM)

Could you support that claim? Who (or what) is the EAC? Who (or what) are “its brethren?” Can you identify them? Are you confusing water wth oil? What does your assertion have to do with fracking?

(AVATAR #74: Nova Scotia One-Cent Black Stamp)

    A pleasure as always.

    Cheerio!

  17. Yes, Nukka, all of what you mentioned that “we” have done around the world in the name of capitalism being “ok” may be YOUR opinion but, it’s not mine, nor the opinion of many others in a growing local sustainability movement. Being good stewards of your local environment, economy and populace is, at the very least, a start and sends a progressive message that the status quo is not acceptable. Even baby steps in the right direction, wether they be local or abroad, are steps nonetheless. You can call me/us a bunch of granola munching, occupy hippies but, that says more about says more about YOUR mentality than it does mine. Time to unsheathed your head from it anal, weapons lock-up.

  18. Mr Harper, I did not say that was my opinion but was merely pointing out the hypocrisy that arises from that attitude. It also appears as though you’re mixing my opinions on fresh water and fracking. I am personally against fracking, however I couldn’t care less that we’re exporting a natural resource that the rest of the planet desperately needs. That was my point.

Now on that note, how have any of us changed our lifestyles to better the planet other than saying no to fracking? Which again I am against. My argument once again was to the exportation of fresh water which we have an abundance of. We live in a global economy and with that comes trade, most notably being natural resources. The attitude presented towards fresh water is that we can take, take, take, but we can’t give. That to me is hypocrisy at its best, which once again was my point.

I cycle well over 8,000km a year, maintain a sizeable vegetable garden, volunteer and help organize with my yearly neighbourhood cleanup and many many other positive “earth friendly” activities. I know I am the change I wish to see in the world.

And congrats on your first comment towards me that hasn’t been deleted. That must have taken a lot of restraint on your part. Oh, and welcome back! You lasted all of what, five weeks this time?

  19. Might have been five weeks, I don’t keep track of stupid shit like that. I’ll leave the sleuthing and googling to you, Sport. Congratulations to you for becoming completely obsessed with me, it’s been, like, three comments (I’m sure if it was more than exactly three, you’ll let me know) since my “return” before you start rehashing old shit you couldn’t let lie even while I wasn’t commenting. I think I should be flattered that you take so much effort out of your day for little old me. Thanks for being my hero, want a creepy backrub?

  20. Oh, and I think it has been three comments on your part. Two of which have been for me.

What was that obsession thing you brought up?

  21. Lol, “but you’ve been banned and I haven’t…”. Oh Captain, my Captain!!!
