Last time I checked, EVERY city had bums. Maybe I’m crazy thinking that though.

I agree OP. The same guy is at the Windsor Street exchange daily with his coffee cup looking for money. If people would just stop giving these leeches money, maybe then they’d go away. There are plenty of jobs out there, but these bums are too damn lazy to work for an honest dollar. Giving them coins isn’t encouraging them to try to change their situation. I don’t give them one damn cent.
I’m over trolling Halifax haters. I have a feeling the last few have been by the same person.

If someone is hungry and asks for food, feed them. I’m not a bible guy, but we need to practice a little human kindness at times, in between bitching. I don’t give money simply because I cannot feel good with knowing it’s probably for booze or drugs. Whenever someone asks me for food or coffee, I take them to the nearest restaurant or coffee place. One time a guy looked like he woke in the alley asked for coffee money. I said let’s go get you a coffee. We went to the coffee boutique on SPark, since we were in front of it. The guy got a 5$ latte and 8$ worth of cookies and food.
No skin off my butt, and he seemed pretty grateful.
It’s so sad, wheelie, how the “pros” who are just looking for booze or drug money and the ones who make their living off of panhandling ruin it for those who are really in need…especially those with psychological and emotional disorders who are, for one reason or the other, on the streets because they truly can’t take care of themselves…mental health services in this province are SHIT and a lot of people will fall through the cracks and end up broke and hungry on the streets.
It’s such a shame.
And remember, many of us are just one or two paycheques away from living on the streets ourselves 🙁

I have a lot of empathy for every different kind of person. Even “bums”. There has been times where I have passed somebody, perhaps homeless, but they never told me so how would I know? They said they were starving, and asking for ANYTHING to help them… I won’t give them money. But I did go into Subway and pay for a meal for this person. You can help people without giving them money. If they won’t accept a free meal, then what can you do?
I gave my sandwich to an old homeless man once, but money is out of the question for any of them since I simply don’t know if they’re buying toothpaste or crack.

yes there is real poverty out there….. and helping out the less fortunate is a noble character trait, this guy (and the others at those intersections) leech from those who really need help.

I agree with this poster. I am from London, ON. Which is about the same size as this shitty city. Never once in my 31 years of living there was I ever asked for money.

I hate that Windsor Street Exchange guy!! What a tool! In the summer when he’s waiting for the lights to turn red, he would do push ups! Why not use some of that energy and do some construction or landscaping or porn or something? I would see him walking down from Windsor street, listening to his ipod some days too. He must live down that way in a nice warm home, heated by the morons that give him money.

I work at a hotel and we actually had a homeless man come in and ask if he could sleep in a room for the night. Obviously we cannot do that, but I was curious as to where I could send him, such as a homeless shelter. I called the Y and apparently even homeless shelters cost roughly 25$ for the night. The city should have some sort of program to help those in serious need. I gave a many a bag of food when leaving the Shoppers on SG. With HEALTHY choices. I walked away and as he waited for me to be far enough and didn’t think I would notice he opened the bag with excitement to see what I had bought. The look on his face brought tears to my eyes. Unfortunately some of the homeless are elderly people who probably can’t work due to mental illness or physically can’t handle doing labor work.
The young beggars are a different story…

You make me sick, always judging everybody and making claims about who is or isn’t the “undeserving poor”. What kind of name are you making for the people of Halifax. The precious city of Halifax that you get so defensive about, anytime someone makes a criticism. These are your your children, your youth, your elders, your disabled, your abused, YOUR PEOPLE!!!! Stop making homelessness into an individual problem and try to see some of the factors that contribute to homelessness. Everyone has a story, and until you get to know a person, how can you judge? Even then, who are you to judge? Do you understand that homelessness, in a country that gets as cold as Canada is death sentence? Do you not realize the health problems that homeless people face? Come on people!!! Im not saying that by giving homeless people money on the street that you will make things better, but I’m asking you to look at your general attitudes towards YOUR OWN PEOPLE!!! Calling them bums, and saying not to give to them as though they are stray animals.
Interestingly enough, I find that many people are MORE KIND to stray animals here than they are their fellow human beings. Not that being kind to animals is not important, but it just amazes me, the amount of care, sympathy and anger at injustice that seems to go out towards animals. Yet people seeem to want to watch other human beings suffer because they are “undeserving poor”. Geesh!!! I feel like were livin back in the 1800’s or some shit. But I guess Haligonians are some TRUE CANADIANS, cause Canada is still a MONARCHY, and the people down here will never let you forget it!

Sunsine — what about the Metro Turning Point shelter on Barrington? It’s a homeless shelter for men.
There’s also Hope Cottage that provides meals for homeless people.
Those who aren’t fake homeless WILL go to these places…the rest (a good 75% of panhandlers out there, I’m sure) have PLACES TO LIVE BECAUSE THEY ARE FAKERS, ONETIME.
No one here has a problem with helping out those who need it (well, SOME of the bitchers on here may because there are some huge assholes around here, but most are a’ight), it’s the fake homeless that are too lazy to get a real job and just scam those, like you, onetime, who are wholly naive about the entire situation. If people like you stopped supporting people like this, maybe the problem would go away.
I was telling another bitcher this yesterday — when I was little I never remember SGR having the number of “homeless” panhandlers there are there today. In fact, I only remember seeing one or two here or there and they were mainly digging through the garbage to find something to eat (fake homeless people don’t do that, I’m sure). And I used to spend a lot of time down on SGR with my family whether it was going to the PG, shopping at Mills, going to movies at Park Lane and family dinners at the old Swiss Chalet there…and I was the type of kid that got horribly sad/depressed when I did see someone who was homeless, so I would’ve totally remembered if there was the abundance there is today back then. I still remember this one guy standing in front of the garbage in front of the old KFC eating the bits of chicken left on some bones he found when I was 6 years old. And these guys NEVER asked for money!
And once summer comes you’re going to get all the teenagers who think it’s a good gig out there bumming for change because they’re SO hard up…meanwhile, they’ve got ipods in their pockets and more expensive sneakers on than my adidas.
Maybe you should follow one of these panhandlers after they’re done for the day, onetime — I’ve seen a few go home at night — they’ll hit up the liquor store, and one “regular” panhandler on SGR actually has a sweet apartment on Queen St. A friend of mine who lives down there sees him go in there at night and come out in the morning all the time. And apartments on Queen street aren’t cheap.
I get what you’re saying, onetime, I’ve been there, but them I took off the rose coloured glasses…after I had been asked for money for the bus three times in the span of 20 minutes by the same guy on a daily basis while waiting for my bus (after giving him money for the bus). I’ll offer to buy someone food or a coffee — because those who really do need it will take me up on the offer — but I won’t give money anymore because they’re usually not on the level if they want money only.
Ask them next time what the money’s really for — most will cop to it. Someone asked my dad for money the other day for “food” and my dad said “ok what’s it REALLY for?” and the guy copped and said “booze”…my dad, giving the guy credit for being honest, gave him 10 bucks and had a laugh with the guy…but, my dad doesn’t visit SGR on a daily basis, so I’m guessing he wouldn’t be giving money like that regularly.

Someone who is begging for money is a beggar. As someone with a visible disability I am aware of the reality of the hidden disability. The majority of the folks on SGR have no disability or condition that keeps them from holding some type of work, or looking for work.
I’m not obligated to give my money to every person who asks for it, but if any of them ask for money for food, I will take them right to a restaurant and buy them lunch.
You need to remind yourself that many people on this board are typing for style, and their language may come off as cavalier or harsh, but the sentiment is there if you read it.
If you were down on SGR and 20 people asked you for your spare change, how many would *you* give money to?
