Here is a bitch topic for people to bitch about the coming traffic snarl that entails sending the Olympic Torch up Quinpool at 4-5pm on a weekday.

  1. who in their right mind takes quinpool anyways? I suppose yes it will divert traffic elsewhere…. oh well, you get home 15 minutes later.

  2. uh, pretty much Quinpool is a standstill between 4 and 5:30 M-F from people heading out of town, thats who uses quinpool for a commute…

  3. I just saw the torch being passed at the end of the Macdonald Bridge, it was pretty cool. Sure, it tied up some traffic, but it’s not an everyday thing.

  4. cranky, exactly my point. you know it’s going to be bumper to bumper whether there’s a torch or now… why take it?

  5. The torch was going in the opposite direction of all of the rush hour traffic. It barely caused any problems, get a grip.

  6. um…. was FORCED to take Quinpool due to police presence at Oxford/Jubilee

and its fucking stupid to have torch bearing ceremony thing DURING RUSHHOUR … wtf

  7. Conclusion jumped to?

Nice Goin’ Fat, do you think F7 was just avoiding the police because he/she is such a badass, or that maybe a police barricade was IN THE WAY?

    F7…?

  8. OK, well let’s just see. I was hoping F7 would say he didn’t want the fuzz to see the sawed-off he has mounted where his visor should be.

  9. At first when I saw the cops blocking off the intersection outside my window I thought some crazed gunman was on the loose, but alas, it was just some people passing a giant joint to each other.

  10. “uh, pretty much Quinpool is a standstill between 4 and 5:30 M-F from people heading out of town, thats who uses quinpool for a commute…”

So how could you tell that it was backed up because of the torch relay?

  11. Some people would be happier if the torch would just stay the fuck away, oh and the olympics, fuck them too, right?
What the fuck is wrong with you people? Park your car, get out, and support your fuckin country! If everyone was like these crank arses, there would be no one supporting our athletes and Sidney could’ve passed Sarah the flame without any wittnesses on an old dirt road far away from civilization.
Thank God, this isn’t the case, since over 15,000 took the chance of getting “caught in traffic” just so they could show their support in downtown Hali last night!

  12. I didn’t mind the torch relay so much, just the over the top police presence that basically put all the streets on lockdown last night.

Why can’t they just have a police escort through the city? They had like 4 police officers on every intersection 12 blocks ahead of where the torch runner was.

  13. not to mention the countless other parallel streets you could take most of the way and pop onto quinpool just before the rotary… pepperell, for instance? there may be a few stop signs, but at least there aren’t 1000 cars in the way of them.

  14. I saw the flame pass through four intersections. At each one there where dozens (some close to hundreds) of people watching this special occasion. For the traffic that was tied up, cars honked in encouragement as the flame passed by. What an excellent display of our community. Also, the party at grand parade was very well done.

P.s. cranky, dont suppose you’ll blame Santa Clause for blocking up roads for the festival of lights?

  15. Actually, I don’t have a problem with The Torch or the Santy Claus parade, I was just going to get the ball rolling for anyone that did.

What I do have a problem with, though, is how much money is being dumped into this production and who is paying for it?

  16. $50,000 for the Grand Parade dealy, paid for by the Olympic Committee, or maybe Coca-Cola, I’m not sure. Not by HRM, anyway.

  17. There is definitely a lot a government money that is turned over to the Olympic Committee.

From CBC: “providing security for the Games could cost as much as $1 billion.”

…worth it? I don’t think so. …but then, Canada has always been a bit like a Survivor player—very concerned with what other people think of us—and all the cool kids host the Olympics.

  18. In 2006 the Tax payers in Quebec finally paid off the 1976 Olympics ! 30 Fucking years of debt on the taxpayer for a couple of weeks some over exercised bozo’s can run, jump, hop ,skip & swim. Big fucking deal !
THey want to hold “Olympic games” with Olympic traditions. Then run on roads “like the original greek athelets did, swim in lakes ,ponds or the damn ocean.
They need places to stay in…how about renting hotel rooms or pitch a damn tent…you want authentic Olympic games…hold them in fuckin’ Greece ! Stop spending my tax dollars on this stupidity, that I refuse to participate in, I don’t get to see (& don’t want to) & don’t give a flying fuck about…but for some reason the supporters believe they have the right to make me help pay for it !

Fuck off & go somewhere else …& bloody well stay there !

  19. Just a qusetion for all the haters….What do you want your tax dollars spent on? Cause the ones who cry “MY tax $$” MY, MY, MY……usually can’t be pleased no matter what.

Get over it already, we ALL have to pay taxes!

Another question for ya? What if you had a son or daughter who trained and trained, year after year, and became an olympic athlete? Would you still be saying FUCK the olympics? Fuck the athletes? FUCK the torch? I bet you wouldn’t if it was your offspring carrying it……

  20. more, by your reasoning we shouldn’t be funding a canadian soccer team either because I hate soccer.
it’s global man, everyone isn’t going to listen to you.
wars were stopped for the duration of this event ffs…. I’m not saying I’m going to watch any of it.. but I certainly expect it to happen every couple years.

  21. Lorilulu & zZz, I don’t believe we should be funding a soccer team. We don’t fund NHL hockey teams ! Some uses for the tax money…how about a medicare for seniors, no matter what they need give them a flat $5.00 fee for their drugs…or better yet, make it free. What do you think 2 BILLION Dollars in tax payer money wasted on a nonworking long gun registry would have done to say, to lowering University & vocational education costs for students ?
What about the 2 Billion + this latest Olympics ,PLUS THE INTEREST COSTS would do for say…Health Care in Canada. We need more nurses & doctors….How many can you hire for 2 Billion dollars ? We have Politicians who are not responsible for how money is wasted, they say they can’t track every dollar…Yet Revenue Canada seems to do that like a bulldog on a fresh bone ! Too many Canadians IMO are too stupid or just too damn lazy to attempt to get change.
First we need Politicians to be responsible for mistakes made when they are in charge…That one change will effect us (& probably save Billions of wasted dollars) After all the threat of Prison time seems to work to keep most Canadians paying taxes & reporting income. Have a system where The Party in powers elected officials are accountable, financially & abuses bring criminal charges against them… we’ll see change.
I don’t support Tax dollars going to special interest groups. Like the 4 rink complex in Bedford…a Businessman/group were trying to do that & it gets nixed by Government at the Municiple level, WHY ? So that it can instead be built & controled by Government ??? THose that wish to use this type of facility can bloody well pay for it. Why should those of us who for the most part will never even go in there, have to help pay for it !

  22. With that reasoning, More, why should I pay for someone else to go to school? Or someone else’s life saving operation? Or some senior’s drug perscription? None of those things directly affect me at the present time…
Just becuse you don’t like the Olympics or have a kid or yourself playing hockey in Bedford, you don’t think YOUR tax dollars should go to that….but what about me and my interests?? I pay taxes just like you, and I plan to spend more time in the arena than I do at Emerg…
We could make arguments all day about what the tax $ should be spent on, but the thing about Canada is we have a very diverse group of people who all want different things, so maybe you should take a look at one of the 1st lessons learned in life, and SHARE with your fellow Canadians!

  23. Emerg is there to save your life waiting to save mine and help anyone who needs it …way more important than you having a taxpayer paid place to skate…I got no problem with rinks, but make them like bowling alleys or theatres…PRIVATELY OWNED BUSINESS, you still have to pay for ice time on a city owned venue !
You went to school so someone paid for your basic education…your repaying your education think of it like that.
As for Senior medical…if you win (ie get to live to old age) it will be there to help you just like it should be there to help our seniors.
lorilulu your BS excuses mean SFA. We have real needs in this part of the world & another rink isn’t goin gto solve anything. Especially one we’re goin gto be on the hook for it taxpayer wise, when a private business wanted to set the same thing up in the same area & was denied…that’s nucking futs & people like you who support that type of government buracracy interference is why we have the problems of over budget municipalities, provinces & countries & tax dollar waste.
I have no problem with sharing…I just don’t see why tax dollars wshould be used for minority groups, when the MAJORITY IS SUFFERING from areas (health care, education, seniors) that could use more money if it was available.

  24. Exactly.

The only time government should be spend against the wishes of the MAJORITY is when the MINORITY would suffer unduly (tyranny of the majority). That is a key purpose of a government.

    school –> clearly benefits majority
certain laws –> protect minority suffering
health care –> benefits majority AND fights undue suffering
    Olympics –> big fat NEITHER

No-one will suffer unduly without the Olympics, even hard-training athletes. There’s a job market for them. It involves getting FANS to pay to watch them do their thing. It does NOT involve forcing money out of the wallets of people who don’t give a flying fuck, say, how aerodynamically they can lie on their sled.

Also… More, I’m loving “like a bulldog on a fresh bone”. lol

  25. -Okay I see your point, but it is one of the only times our world comes together in a peaceful and competitive way. It makes me all warm inside and extremely proud to be Canadian…can’t wait to hear the anthem! Sorry everyone doesn’t feel that way!

  26. No Dog… It just came to me…I was inspired 😉
    Lorilulu, sorry I rant !
THere lot’s of stuff gov does that pisses me off… in one way , but I enjoy in another way, like the cost of fireworks. They are something to see, especially with kids, but at what cost ?
Is it really too much to ask for the elected people & those who run the government depts. under them, to be able to stay on track & on budget ? After all there are thousands upon thousands of businesses from tiny 1 person operations up to the worlds largest employers…& they seem to manage & even >gasp< /make profits !
Also -I’m not into the games, but I understand where your coming from.
