  1. No the worse is to let evil triumph and not do anything about it. While there is evil in the world, the military and police are needed.

  2. I think it’s time Canada did the mature thing and left the UN. Mouthing off to the world about what we will tolerate is just embarrassing!!!

  3. All that is needed for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing.
Pretty much what we’re doing right now.

  4. But zZz, Putin is just a good ole boy meaning no harm. At least that’s what the pacifists believe.

  5. lol “pacifists.”

spoken like someone who’s never been in a scrap in his life. even dangerous danny davis used to put up his dukes.

  6. Well fake John, you don’t know me at all. Basil, your analysis is spot on. First Crimea, then the rest of the Ukraine, then the other former SSRs and west to slide the Iron Curtain across Europe again. Of course it is possible that Obama could bore him to death.

  7. It really doesn’t matter what the West does, or doesn’t do. Ukraine loses. Condemned by geography and history to be under the boot of whatever Czar is occupying the Kremlin.

If you have to be the neighbor of a superpower, I suppose it’s preferable to live next to a nation that can periodically ask “Why do they hate us?” rather than one that just doesn’t give a fuck.

  8. I’m going to pose a question…What if the Ukraine, with the significant advantages of the cheap reliable source of energy (natural gas) that Russia has to offer them as a poor nation, decided they wanted to side with Russia instead of economic servitude, not unlike Greece and Spain, the EU has to offer? Would they be allowed to make that choice, however unpopular it seems to be in the West?

It would seem to me that both sides are after the same thing, expanding their borders, creating more slaves, and ensuring their energy interests by chicken-hawking a country with extreme civil and economic woes. I’m not sure that cramming an economy crushing euro down their throats makes any more sense than being swallowed by Russia. The outcome looks equally as bleak, it’s just that the EU is backed by the UN.

I also see footage that resembles the “election” in Afghanistan, a significant military presence outside ballot boxes, “protecting their right to democracy”. Which we all really know that they were their to ensure their backed candidate won. When the “West” protects their interests, everyone cheers. When Russia does it, well…it’s a threat of WWIII.

Before all you bandwagon jumping nutbags jump down my throat, I’m only asking the question. There are always two sides to every story…and considering the US was excused for their illegal occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq because of “terror threats, and weapons of mass destruction” (or I like to call it, revenge and protecting an oil pipeline system), I am more than a little leery of the UN’s judgement and motivations.

  9. “GOD WITH US”

Oliver Cromwell would not have agreed that war is the worst. In fact, he was rather partial to it. Of course, being a Puritan, he knew that God was always with him.

New Avatar Alert! Oliver Cromwell Shilling 1656

    A pleasure as always.

    Cheerio!

  10. Fact; War brings peace. The very peace that allows and enables you to post this very complaint.

Fact; There are far too many assumptions being made by know it alls. No one raises an eyebrow for the conflict effecting an Italian state that wants to secede. My guess would be none of you even know because CNN hasn’t reported it yet.

  11. In the case of Ukraine, they had a leader who preferred servitude to the Kremlin over that of the EU. Enough people in the country have a very real remembrance of the former and were eager to try the latter. I really don’t know if that option would benefit them, significantly. But, there is utterly no evidence to support the suggestion that the Ukrainian people would benefit in either the real terms of economics or the more nebulous aspect of “rights and freedoms” by returning to Moscow’s control, another province in a resurgent Russo/Soviet Empire. Putin appears to have learned well from the past; he has taken the worst aspects of both the Russian Imperial era and the Soviet experiment and made them his own. Nations have gone to war over the region before; the losers have always been the Ukrainians themselves.
So, I don’t know if this is another Sudetenland, or just Putin’s surrogate for Viagra. We in the West will click our tongues and say what a shame, and then move on to something else. Ukraine will fade into the memory like Syria. Sanctions will be imposed, then ignored and we will think we’ve done something.

As far as there being “two sides to every story”. Sure.
Us versus them. Always has been; always will be. Isolationism in a globalized world is a luxury, sort of like expecting to sit by yourself on a bus.
    How’s that for bandwagon jumping?

  12. That’s exact my point, Ivan. It doesn’t seem to matter which way the wind blows, the Ukrainian’s will inevitably end up with the short straw. As unfortunate as the circumstances may be, picking a winner in the global quest for securing energy and strategic property equates to forcing the will of choice A or, choice B, on a formerly sovereign nation. Unfortunately there are no purely “altruistic” reasons for any of this conflict. All of it is based on strategy, globalization, and control. There is no real choice for the Ukrainian people, no matter which side “wins”. There is no “liberation” light at the end of their tunnel.

Perhaps “bandwagon jumpers” might be a little strong a term but, thinking that the UN has a single thought for the people of Ukraine is a falsehood and, equates to nothing but propaganda from the West. IMO.

Hypocrisy is hypocrisy, and the UN is rife with it!!!

  13. If someone dislikes Hailfax they’re told to leave. Can we by any chance apply that to Canada as a whole?

If we’re so oppressed and its not a democracy then why don’t you move? Seriously, just go.

  14. Fact: a colon is used before a list or an explanation

Fact: to link independent clauses not joined by a coordinating conjunction

Fact: War brings peace, but why do we need to war to have peace?

  15. If Ukrainians did opt and were permitted to join the EU, just think of the benefits they’d gain, Muzzers, Muzzers and more Muzzers. I think Vlad has a boner on for dealing with them, god bless him and pass the vodka.

  16. Duh huh, that’s original, Ryan. Those comments are usually reserved for the OB’s that spout off about Halifax and how much it sucks because it’s not like Toronto, or any other blank you wish put in Toronto’s place. I’m not comparing Canada to anywhere, I’m worried about how the political landscape of my country is being manipulated to give the advantage to one party (ideology), therefore eroding our democracy. If that doesn’t worry you, then that’s your right to bury your fool head in the sand. Its probably better that way anyway, no need to dumb the rest of the population down to your level, ya assclown!!!

  17. So you’re on the way to saving your country on a local newspaper site? My apologies then, carry on with the good fight.

On a side note if I’m the “dumb assclown” may I inquire as to which university you earned your credentials? But judging by your comment history you’re a truck driver so maybe leave the big boy decisions to those that were elected by the people, to lead the people.

I know your type…………… Halifax is full of them. Big fish in a small incest pond that would simply crumble and vanish elsewhere. Now go and drag your knuckles as you walk away frothing and drooling to save “our country”.

  18. I gots me mah grade 10, with trucker math, cause all that addin, subtractin, and englishin was for suckers, plus, my mom said I was speshial and I didn’t need it nohow !!! How’s that for credentials?

First; I never called you a “dumb assclown”, I called you an assclown. In fact, I never called you dumb at all, let alone a “dumb assclown”. Ever hear of the expression “dumb it down”? Apparently not. I guess when people are “dumbing it down” for you, you’re always the last to know. Also, why is “our country” in quotations? Is it not our country? Are you not Canadian? Does Canada not belong to Canadians?

Second; Only people who are insecure judge someone by what they do for money, unless it wasn’t meant as an insult and by “truck driver” you meant: Canadian, taxpayer, law abiding/productive member of society, husband, property owner, pet owner, hiker, skier, friend, etc… Get it yet? Also, you may want to look around at everything you have, as well as imagine far into the future about everything you will ever buy, build, drive, fly, eat, etc…and be thankful that there are people with “big boy jobs” out there to do the work necessary for the lifestyle you take for granted. Thanks for coming out, Mr. Bigshot!!!

Third; I’m not “saving my country on a local newspaper site”. That’s just stupid!!!

Fourth; You don’t “know my type” at all. See what I did there, I quoted you using the same words you used, pretty sweet eh? You don’t know the first thing about me other than I happen to be a “truck driver” and all the other things I listed off above. My arms are actually pretty average in lenght, making knuckle dragging nearly impossible from the fully upright position.

I think that about covers it but, if I forgot anything, be sure and let me know.

  19. MORAL EQUIVALENCE? IS UKRAINE A VICTIM OF NATO?

The argument goes like this: Instead of simply accepting
their fate as a part of Russia, Ukraine has made things difficult. It has failed to understand that Russia is the victim here. It is the victim of NATO and its hostile alliances gathering at the very doorstep of Russia. Given this provocation, Putin had no choice but to invade Ukraine. His hands were tied. The victim has become the oppressor. For the “bien pensants” on this site, it is not Ukraine but rather Russia which is the victim. This not a figment of imagination. Indeed, it is the consensus of the foreign-policy community.

John Meersheim of The New York Times writes, “The taproot of the current crisis is NATO expansion and Washington’s commitment to to move Ukraine out of Moscow’s orbit and integrate it into the West.” In the same way Peter Beinhart of “The Atlantic” writes that “… the post Cold-War period has brought one long march by America and its allies closer and closer to the border of Russia itself.” Anatol Lieven, a professor of “War Studies” at King;s College, London, is similarly in no doubt. “It is morally criminal,” he proclaims, “for the West to force to Ukraine to choose between Russia and Ukraine.” And so on.

It is, of course, the default position of the orthodox Western pundits. Leaving aside the unprovoked invasion of and annexation of the territory of a neighboring country, the worlds of academia and journalism responded not by condemning the aggressors but by blaming the victims. It was NATO which was the problem.

But the fact is that there is no causal link between NATO’s decision to admit Latvia in 2004, for example, and Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine in 2014. So, if NATO is described as “marching toward” Russia and is presented as a “hostile alliance”, it doesn’t matter if NATO actually fits that description, only that Putin views it that way and, in the realm of moral equivalency, that is sufficient. To ensure such equivalency, we must adopt it as our own.

One must remember that NATO is a “defensive alliance.” Those seeking membership do not want to invade Russia but to protect themselves from Russian invasion. But Putin finds such a position a provocation, an insult. And the “bien pensants,” such as we have seen here, support his view.

    A pleasure as always.

    Cheerio!

  20. MM, almost. Putin wants to put back together the Soviet Bloc and the SSRs. You can take the boy out of the KGB but you can’t take the KGB out of the boy.

“You can take the boy out of the KGB but you can’t take the KGB out of the boy.”

That’s a pretty profound analysis, Dim Bro. I’m going to have to remember that one.

    A pleasure as always.

    Cheerio!

  22. RyanStalk – I know your type, full of criticism for people who have something to say but nothing to say yourself. If your dick gets so hard for war why don’t you try having a one-player game of russian roulette?

  23. Shitty man-you are awesome! I thought RyanStalk’s comment was narrow-minded and offensive….I also thought RyanStalk was a girl–probably MyraGirl’s bestie….anyway dude, you really know how to step up to the plate! Kudos!

@Hoist–great comment, reminds me of that Shatner tune ‘Has Been’ lol

  24. oh also, this so called Provocation by nato as the idiot above mentioned…what about georgia, south ossetian war? where russia backed a violent militia into rebelling against the georgian gov’t and when Georgia responded by force to reclaim the breakaway state, the russians “intervened” aka invaded. or Chechnya, where over 250k civillians were slaughtered indiscriminately while only 50k fighters were killed…or afghanistan….where russia invaded because “russian civillians were killed” in an uprising there, necessitating invasion. Its the same fucking playbook the russian govt has pulled since the 80’s only this time in Ukraine they dont have the mujahadeen to go against… wake the fuck up already.
