The Bard’s local theatre troupe is performing *As You Like It* tonight in a public park. It was disheartening to find tickets are $25 per person. I think that price is a bit excessive to sit on grass. Shopping comparatively with the world famous festival in Stratford, Ontario, it turns out one can buy tickets for the very same play, for…you guessed it, $25! The Straford venue is a real theatre, professionally equipped with reserved seats that has attracted many famous performers. Why is the local production so expensive? —Julius C.

  1. Does the Stratford venue come replete with mozzies, deer ticks, dog faeces and a fountain filled with detergent?
    I think not.
    Good day to you sir.
    Good Day.

  2. Clearly, the number of ticket holders must stay about the same regardless of the ticket price. Hence, raising the ticket price is an obvious way to maximize profits.

  3. Speaking of Halifax’s false sense of superiority and culture, shouldn’t that White Dinner thing be happening soon or did I miss it?

  4. It’s actually a pay-what-you-can performance. $25 gets you a reserved chair in the front. Although one part of the website is misleading on this front, this purchase page is more clear:

I personally just show up and toss something in the jug. I’ve never seen one of their outdoor performances sell out, so no real need to go through the online system.

  5. These performances should be supported by their audience and not some gov fund. So don’t be so cheap next time.

  6. Hi Julius!

We must have not been very clear on how tickets work. Shakespeare by the Sea is a non-profit organization so tickets are actually by donation. It’s a recommended donation of $20 per adult but whatever you can give is greatly appreciated! You can also rent chairs there for $2 or even bring your own. The $25 charge is for something we call “Sweet Seats,” these are the 50 best seats in the “house” and they come with a reserved chair. They also come with a free bottle of water! Hope this clears up the confusion.

    Cheers!
