Three factors are in play in the poster’s claim that her “friend” believes that women are inferior to men in certain areas such as politics and logical thought processes. My claim is that while women are not inferior in any way but rather they are different. How is this so?
At the biological level – and there is a large element of truth in the old saying that, “biology is destiny” – the possession of a vagina instead of a penis, while not important in itself, does provide the “platform” for one’s orientation to the world. The vagina is penetrated, the penis penetrates. This inescapable biological fact informs the female’s world-view in the sense that she has a receptive attitude to the world while the male, with his penis, is has an active attitude to the world. He penetrates it. Of course this may well not be true in particular cases but it does appear to underlie fundamental gender differences.
At the sociological level this biological distinction provides the “platform” for differences in gender socialization. The little girl plays with dolls, the little boy plays with guns. In other words, the gender differences observable at birth are reinforced throughout the child’s formative years. She is socialized to be the nurturer, he is socialized to be the bread-winner.
At the intellectual level, while the male’s thinking proceeds along sequential, cause-effect logical lines, the female’s thinking is more “hermeneutic,” is more inclusive, immediate and intuitive. How many times have we heard from females on this site that males just “don’t get it.” And they are right. Perhaps for the most part, males just do not get it. They do not even know what the phrase “not getting it” means.
So your “friend” is wrong. Males are not better than females, but they are different. Indeed, the word “better” is inoperative in comparing the two. It’s like comparing apples and oranges.

Well Daniel, if women are indeed better than men at reading body language as you maintain, I believe my reference to their “hermeneutic” way of knowing includes their reading of body language. In its narrow sense, of course, “hermeneutics” refers to the interpretation of Scripture but I broadened its reach to include interpretation in a general and not restricted to a narrow epistemological sense.
In any case I still stand by my claim that while the general orientation of the male to the world is penetrative – who has not heard the expression “a thrusting young man” – the general orientation of the female to the world is more receptive, more holistic and more accommodating. However, given the fundamental differences between the genders which precludes the one entering wholly into the consciousness of the other in spite of whatever they might think (viz. Daniel himself – how did he know that women are better at reading body language?), my claim must stand since females, being equally unable to penetrate the male consciousness, can never convincingly (i.e., from a male perspective) ever overturn it.
I trust that everyone is in agreement with my claim.
