Now don’t get me wrong, I am completely for equal right for all. Including, men, women, trans, staight, gay, bi, black, white, purple. You get my drift. But I am a little confused on what “equal rights” means. It should be common sense. Yet how it is equal rights for a gay man to be allowed to walk naked in a parade? If a straight man walked naked in a parade he would be arrested for indecent exposure. THAT is not equal rights. That is reverse discrimination. 1. this shit comes splattering forth after the pride parade, same as last year. get a new soap box

  2. it seems o.p., that some people are more equal than others. and why would that be now? do they have something that the rest of us poor fucks lack? or could it be because of some pet project, that some fool politition has going?

  3. ummm, why couldn’t a straight man walk naked in the Pride Parade if he wanted to walk around naked? Hey dude, maybe the nekkid man you saw WAS straight? did he have a placard strung off his wing wang stating his preference?
and I don’t know about ya’ll. but those purple people, well. nuff said.

  4. Sometimes people (feminists, aniti-racists, pro-gay, etc) become overzealous in their quest for equality. This can lead to a feminist becoming anti-masculine, trading her defense for women’s rights into an offense on men (usually all men as a collective). Or some people who stand for racial equality, suddenly the ‘White man’ is now the bad guy instead of equal to the Black, Asian, or purple man.
I’ve found people have a tendency to jump to extremes like this sometimes.

A Gay man walking naked in a parade = Not acceptable
A Wife beating a Husband = Not acceptable
Black people calling Caucasians ‘Whitey’s’ = Not acceptable

I’m unsure of whether society really understands what equal rights actually are. I agree with the OB

  5. it’s the anti-this, pro-that…fuck sakes, no one is equal, we’re all of bunch of ants on a ball of dirt

  6. except the dirt would be better off without the damn ants crawling all over it and mucking it up. Truly.

  7. To clumsily paraphrase a twit from Ricky Gervais that I read in M*tr@ this morning – We all have a number of freedoms and rights. Being taken seriously is not one of them.

  8. …and op, when folks say”don’t get me wrong” or “you get my drift” my hackles go up, sorry

  9. gotcha Paingirl. but I meant the two legged ants. However, whilst we are still here, any suggestions for keeping the 6 legged ones out of the kitchen without poison? I have tried fresh lemon, cucumbers, a mild bleach spray, limes. Buggers still marching up and down my counters. and I keep a reasonably clean house, not awash in crumbs, but not antiseptic either.

  10. He was waiting for the naked bike ride, his wee wee got caught in the bike chain last time.

  11. the naked bike ride! I forgot about that one. There ya go OP, a place where straight guys can dingle dangle all they want. equal rights.

  12. Good dog Molly: if you have a clean house, traps using fresh fruit or other incentive is ineffective (it only attracts more). Best method; Equal parts icing sugar and powdered javex (borax). Sprinkle this in a solid 2 inch thick line around your house. 100% effective.

That’s only if you agree with killing entire populations 😉

  13. “But I am a little confused about what equal rights means.” (Tired of Equal Rights Being Taken Advantage Of)

This is an interesting question. I see it to fall into two distinct parts: (1) What does it mean to “mean something” and, (2) Of what does the concept of “equal rights” consist?

    (1) What exactly does the poster mean by “mean?” Two possibilities emerge, the (a) denotative sense and the (b) linguistic or the conventional usage sense. The denotative sense of meaning, of course, refers to the extra-linguistic object denoted. For example, when one says “cat” one means the small, fur-bearing domesticated animal commonly seen in suburban homes. But this denotative sense of “meaning something” does not seem to apply to the issue under review, i.e., “equal rights” but this question will be addressed below.

What, then about (b) the linguistic or conventional usage sense of what it means to mean something? For example, when one says “I love you,” what does that mean? Clearly it does not refer to the extra-linguistic object denoted as in the case of the cat but rather is intended to convey the feeling of the speaker. It is internal rather than external. It is an emotion rather than an object. But does this mean that its status as meaning suffers from some dimunition, some dilution of meaning? I think not. Indeed, it might have an even stronger meaning than the simple denotation of extra-linguistic objects and perforce, a more complete concept of meaning. But space constraints prevent me from pursuing this question here. So what about the meaning of “equal rights?”

    (2) I see the question of the meaning of “equal rights” to fall into two distinct categories, (a) that of what it means to be “equal” and (b) that of the content of the concept of “rights” itself. What, then, is it to be “equal?” We are not talking of some sort of physical equilibrium here, some equality of physical forces as in, for example, those supporting a suspension bridge. We are talking about “equal” in some higher, normative sense. So, for example, when one says that someone is “equal” to another he might mean something like “intellectually equal” but then that raises the further question as to just how variations in intelligence are to be assessed. Is he talking about some psychological yardstick such as the Stanford-Binet assessment of intelligence or does he hsve some more amorphous, perhaps intuitive concept of intelligence in mind? This question must be set aside for further discussion. So that brings us to the question of “rights.”

    (b) We have at least an initial grasp – a beachead if you like – of what it means to be “equal” but how does this bear on the question of “rights?” Presupposed, of course, is the concept of “rights” itself. What is it to be a “right?” Obviously it is something – a rank, a privilege, a title and so on – to which one is entitled but this raises the further question as to the legitimacy of such entitlement. For example, would such legitimacy spring up by virtue of birth as in a hereditary aristocracy or perhaps legitimacy by virtue of business acumen as in the csse of the successful capitalist entrepreneur? And, of course, there is the nature of the rights themselves. It is generally agreed that the mediaeval right of “the first night” has been superceded and does not, in fact, currently constitute a legitimate right any more. This points to the transiency of the concept of “rights” itself. Beyond the right of equality before the law, the right to the enjoyment of one’s property, the right to basic human dignity and so on, are there other rights which we might legitimately claim as our own? This is a question which, as with the determination of the varying degrees of intelligence, must be set aside for further consideration.

So there we are. It’s been a pleasure to clear up the poster’s question, “what equal rights means.”

    A pleasure as always.

    Cheerio!

  14. Well OB, I call bullshit on the “naked guy” in the parade. I drove one of the trucks pulling the floats, and was at the spot where all the floats were assembled from 8:00 until 1:25 when the parade began. I was not witness to any “naked” people, gay or otherwise. There was a dude in a “mankini”, like the green one in BORAT, but definitely no nudity. I have volunteered for many other parades in the past, but never the pride parade, but it was by far the most fun I have ever had (parade wise). Congrats on a great parade Pride Committee, I look forward to next years event!

  15. There weren’t any nekkid people in the parade, SHITTY — there was actually a naked dude and a few naked ladies on south park who weren’t in the parade — someone I work with was in the parade and they told me about it.

There was a naked guy IN one of the trucks pulling a float. But he was IN the truck (you couldn’t see anything) and there was a sign saying he was in the buff. Who knows if he *actually* had no drawers on.

Though, there were a few gentlemen with calvin briefs on who might as well’ve been nekkid — you could see the outline of their [circumcised] penises. *gasp*!

    I sure hope they’re growers! 😛

  16. —–
    now don’t get me wrong
    —–

But God hates f@€s, right OB?

When you include “purple” with legitimate races/creeds/orientations/etc, you realize you’re trivializing the ACTUAL people and tipping everyone off to how you ACTUALLY FEEL, right?

    —–
some people are more equal than others
    —–

Translation: “it really pisses me off when minorities insist on being treated equally. As a powerless, impotent member of the ‘majority’, it helps me feel I have meaning when I can legally shit all over another group”.

  17. Montrealman. I think rights start at the base of human needs. The right to life, and the right to food and shelter. Also, the right to be approached (at least initially) without prejudice. That means a lot, obviously, but it has great inplications. Someone may look like a homeless crazy person, but they could be incredibly world wise and compassionate.

Wheelie. Including purple people does trivialize the matter, but in a good way. Because it is a joke! There’s no sense in placing one individual below another based on their, usually, random heritage of race or sex.

  18. I don’t believe the people who include “purple” are intending to be funny. I believe they are intending to reduce something intrinsic to someone’s identity, to something silly and worthy of dismissal.

    Are you the OB?

    Wp

  19. Not the OB, I don’t write bitches. But I’m picking up what you’re throwing down. I just don’t think the Bitcher meant to disregard someones preference in the way you think they did.

  20. are we gonna start this shit up again? i was perfectly happy to let everything slide by. but now you are trying to put words in my mouth, that were never intended to be there. some fucking people just don’t grow up. not once today, have i said a snide thing to you, or that other person. just made my comment, and moved the fuck on. why don’t you?

  21. I don’t agree with public nudity and exhibitions of sexuality, whether gay, straight, or bisexual. Especially not when little kids are around.

  22. 20 or 30 years ago the pride parade definitely had more of a protest motivation which would make the almost naked part a legitimate statement for some people. Now the parade is more of a celebration. Why aren’t there naked people on Canada day floats? Because there are kids around……

  23. “I don’t have anything against gay people but…[insert ignorant comments about how you have something against gay people here]”. Fuck people piss me off! I’m so glad you have never experienced discrimination or oppression because of something beyond your control, that you can’t fathom why a Pride Parade is legitimate. “Where’s my straight parade durrr durrr?” When people start killing you, beating you, harassing you, raping you until you’re “corrected”, then you can have a fucking parade mmkay? As long as hateful mouths keeps making noise, there will be a parade. I saw no naked people at the parade.

    : Darth Captain (07/30, 9:47PM)

Yes, of course Darth, you are talking about “basic rights” but I was examining the dimensions of the concept itself.

Actually Darth, my post was a spoof, a parody of conceptual analysis as it has been carried out by some philosophers in the past. I was having a good laugh as I was writing it. It was one of Montrealman’s “little jokes” if you like. However, Darth, it sounds like you were sucked in which, of course, makes it all the more enjoyable. Well, for me anyway.

The fact that it got only one “like” – the one I posted myself – indicates that the spoof was a resounding success. People would read it, well try to read it, and say, “What the hell is all this about?” My pleasure, as you can imagine Darth, was unbounded.

    A pleasure as always.

    Cheerio!

  25. Lisacunt: this parade has been going on for 25 years. If people think it’s inappropriate for their children to see, then they can always stay the fuck home for the 2 hours the parade takes up.

I think it’s a wonderful expression of freedoms and has people from all walks of life. I definitely intend to bring my children to the parade when I have them.

But, I also don’t intend to sweep the issue of sex, sexuality and sexual preference under the rug when I have kids. These are [important] facts of life asshole conservatives like you, Lisacunt, get their panties in a twist about.

People like you make me ill.

  26. I find it interesting that they let a man walk in the parade in, as Steve says “a mankini”, yet they wouldn’t let another man wear a necklace with dicks on it.

  27. “Lisacunt: this parade has been going on for 25 years. If people think it’s inappropriate for their children to see, then they can always stay the fuck home for the 2 hours the parade takes up. “

One could use your angry overly opinionated woman response in support of anti-pride arguments. Fuckwit. People have been openly straight a whole hell of a lot longer than people have been openly gay.

blah blah hfx_godzilla hates gays. I hate everyone equally. I don’t give a flying fuck who you are involved with. As long as you are fucking in the privacy of your own home then consensual sex is consensual sex regardless of man on man, man on woman, man on man on woman, woman on woman, woman on woman on man, man dressed as lizard on woman, man dressed as lizard on man…..

If it was my choice then we wouldn’t have pride parades because we wouldn’t need to. I wish everyone stopped giving a fuck about who people are fucking. As long as you aren’t fucking the family pet or molesting a little kid then its really no ones business where your dick or vagina goes.

  28. In the name of “Equal Rights” I say we should also have a “Shame Parade” where people can publicly show off and revel in those things that they find personally distasteful.

  29. I like the shame parade idea, Ivan. There could be a float for the homophobes, one for the diddlers & the haters, another full of bullies…and we could throw tomatoes! I just don’t know how many a-holes would board the floats…but I really like your concept here.

  30. LOL I know a few people who could be on the homophobe float.

One will post pictures on their facebook about how “two dads are better than none” and then go all “ewwwwwwwww” when someone talks about same sex couples.

    *shakes head*

  31. Kontee – the way things are going now, I would not be surprised if D.S.M.(5) lists “Assholishness” as a legitimate mental disorder. Watch the Medicinal Crystal Meth lobby take off as a result. Fuck it, I’ll be in my bunk watching footage of cops beating up protestors, set to light classical music.
Ahhh Vivaldi. My f-favorite f-folk singer.

  32. pretty kitty: the fuck is your problem, bitch?
and apparently I’m a conervative now! wow news to me.

  33. The ugly fat dudes look for any opportunity to parade naked….. just check CC beach ….. ugh, we are not amused!

  34. Lisacunt: your posts on here are decidedly conservative (little ‘c’ conservative) along with stuck up and uptight.

Perhaps removing the stick you have firmly planted up your arse might loosen things up a bit.

  35. while i do believe in reverse discrimination (one of my chief things is natives, we want equal rights, but we want to be able to fish log and not pay taxes like everyone else). I do not see this is an example of it.

  36. The no taxes privilege is dated. It’s been too long since the land papers were signed. As for the fishing it should be done with traditional methods. That way it’s more sustainable and is a cultural preservation instead of a way to make extra money. Besides, if you wanna make extra money just smuggle cigarettes;)

  37. Wow. It would sure be nice to have some NEW BITCHES TO COMMENT ON….(nudge, nudge, wink, wink, knowwotImean, Mod bird?) 😉

Must be her day off today. (shrug)

  38. So you want to be able to walk around naked huh? I’m sure if you organized some kind of event where that kind of thing was expected like the naked bike ride it wouldn’t be a big deal. It’s not like someone can walk around naked any time they want just because they’re gay. I know of an incident where a gay guy was arrested for being outside pantless.

  39. “I don’t agree with public nudity and exhibitions of sexuality, whether gay, straight, or bisexual.”

Does anybody care about what this dumb broad says or thinks?

    Not ‘I’, said the Biscuit.

  40. Stop being such a fucking prude.

It’s like everyone in Halifax can’t simply remember the date of the parade that happens EVERY YEAR and keep their precious children inside.

Do you watch the Olympics, OB? That also has men in Speedos!

You’re probably just jealous that you can’t let it all hang out

  41. There’s nothing equal about “equal rights”. The richer you are, the more rights you have. The rights you broke asses squabble over, rich people don’t give a shit about, they’re just a distraction to keep you poor and thinking you’re winning.
