I know that this is a done to death bitch, that everyone complains about it, but seriously can someone, anyone, explain to me why I can’t sit on the grass in the Public Gardens? On this first truly nice day of the year, I couldn’t resist the beautiful lush grass and decided to live on the wild side and sit under a tree and read. It was great. Then someone came and told me to move, I can go sit in the appropriately designated grass area. Oh, you mean that square with no trees, flowers, fountains, or anything in it? Thanks!
What is the big deal? How much damage can it do? Do you have any idea how much tax money goes into the meticulous landscaping in that park and I can’t even walk up to the flower beds and smell the roses? It’s not like I want to start playing rugby or something in there, I just want to sit down, maybe even LIE DOWN. Whoa! This really needs to change. —Some Dead Horses Need Beating

The problem OP is not you in particular but everybody in general. If they allow people to sit on the grass anywhere and people do so on a continuous basis, they will kill the grass in patches. Those patches will be in places where most people like to sit like under shady trees. I don’t know but that would seem the obvious reason.Don’t they have benches there under trees?
..that is one od the nicest parks in Canada..and I’ve been to nice ie: Butchart Gardens…WAY too many rules though..too bad..
There’s like a hill or something you can sit on, so I’ve heard.
actually o.p., this is the first in a long time, for this bitch. however, i shall try to enlighten you. walking on grass compresses the mass of it and stunts it’s growth, or so they say. however, i have seen grass walked on all over the country and guess what? it bounces back.
the only damage that you will get by sitting on it, are green shit stains on your ass. not pretty, but not life threatening either. and how do the employeees get to the flowers to pretty them up you ask? they simply walk on the grass. next time you go there, sit on grass, and see what they say is the reason for not letting you. sort of like beating a drum. if no oe says anything, then you are ahead, and win the game.
Rugby is fun to play, watch, and heckle at.
I think you’d be changing your tune once the place goes to hell.
it can change a LOT….
especially the traffic that goes through there. if you’re allowed to lay and sit and chill…
then you’re allowed to walk… creating dirt paths…
and then play frisby.. oops, there goes the flowers….
then it’s just more of the usual shit hole the rest of the city parks are….
I tend to agree. I was there yesterday enjoying the flowers and the sun (finally!) and would have enjoyed being able to park under a tree to enjoy my music and my book. Those park benches just aren’t that comfortable.
You can sit on the grass in Leighton Dillman park. Lovely gardens, view of the harbour. Dartmouth rocks!
the darkside has some beautiful areas. i think the gardens have rules for a reason, no bikes or pets either…makes sense
There’s grassy areas in Victoria Park to sit on, Point Pleasant too, and even the Hill. Just imagine if everyone was tramping all over the Gardens’ grass. There’d be now. Plus all the duck shit in it…..I don’t think you want to see in that grass.
It is very strange. We aren’t a very populated city and in big cities like Manhattan people are aloud to sit in the park or in the garden areas and actually enjoy what’s around them with out some Garden Grump yelling at them while driving like a mad men around in their gators.
Those tax dollars spent to make the Gardens a lovely place to be are EXACTLY why people are not allowed to hang out on the grass. The Public Gardens is the oldest traditional English garden of it’s type outside of England, a type of garden that is meant to be walked through, enjoyed, and observed from benches, so as to preserve the beauty.
If everyone who wanted to sit and relax (yes, I’m included in this group) on the lush green grass of the Public Gardens were allowed to do so, the Gardens would look like almost every other outdoor public space in Halifax, with garbage on the ground, dirt paths worn through lawns….not nice, basically.
There a fountain and grass at the south end of Victoria Park across the street, make a compromise, and sit there instead.
