I am beside myself about EI , my girlfriend is on Maternity leave and it’s bad enough she’s only getting about half of her actual salary every couple of weeks ( which is pathetic in itself ) now that she wants to go back to work ( 1 day a week ) EI is Garnishing money from her for the one day of work ,and it nots like she’s making tons of money a day .And now she gets a letter telling her she owes EI well over a hundred dollars because she started back to work a couple of days earlier then she was supposed too.I can’t believe the trouble you have to go through just to claim back some of your own damn money , she’s been paying into EI for years you wouldn’t think you would be treated like this especially since it’s Maternity leave. The Goverment is wondering why the birthrate in N.S. is down and young people are being out numbered by old people , and wondering why all the young people are moving away to find better paying jobs and having babies elsewhere all they have to do is have a look at their own pathetic system.Whats funny is she would probably get treated better if she just lied about how much she was working like I am sure plenty of people do and never get questioned or just quit her job went on Welfare and had lots of babies to make the cheques bigger like tons of other lazy asses in this province milking the system making it harder for respectible people to make a living. It’s Pathetic .

Paying Into Insurance For Nothing !!

  1. I always thought that when on EI, you were allowed to work a certain amount of hours or make a certain amount of money before any deductions took place. That sucks for you and your girlfriend.

  2. Yeah, but it’s only like $50 or something… that’s what it was years ago, anyhow… it’s ridiculous.

  3. do you realize that EI is a government of Canada program, so leaving Nova Scotia would have no impact on how the program is run. She sould be getting 55% of her pre-tax income which should be equivalent to almost 60%-65% of her take home pay, since the deductions from EI checks are minimal. I think you should blame her employer as many employers do top up maternity leave to 70 or even 90% of pre tax income, which is like getting the same take home pay. Other than that I do agree with you that maternity leave should be higher and maybe the provice could subsidise an extra 10-20% to encourage more people to have kids.

  4. be careful with maternity leave, they didnt take enough from me and when i went to do my taxes, i now owe back 2600!!!

  5. When I lost my full-time job last year I applied for EI. I still had a part-time job that gave me a few hours a week. I had 2 jobs in the first place because along with living expenses I was pay off $20,000 in student loans (which I couldn’t get relief for because I was making an amazing $10 an hour and working full-time, thus I was making ‘too much money’). I was told I qualified & just had to submit a form every week stating how much I worked and if I had been ‘available to work every day’. I managed to get a few more hours at my part-time job, and after stating I worked 9 hours for $10 an hour one week, I was no longer going to get anything. I don’t know about anyone else, but I certainly couldn’t manage all my bills with that. Perhaps the Canadian government has a deal with Visa & Mastercard since abusing your credit cards seems to be the only way to survive when the system is set up this way?

  6. My ex just got fired and he won’t even look for another job cuz he wants to be on EI so they will put him through school (and so he doesn’t have to pay me any child support, no doubt) Of course, he’s not the brightest crayon in the box!

  7. Jesus Matt. Do you ever read what you type before you hit submit?. You make the assumption that every woman who is no longer in a relationship with the father of her children irresponsibly got knocked up by some loser she hardly knew. Of course there are plenty of those. But there are also thousands upon thousands of women who said the words, “till death do us part”, and meant it. You must be very young, and possibly in your first serious relationship, if you don’t understand that people change and grow apart sometimes. There are also thousands upon thousands of women in serious relationships who’s birth control fails. It happens. Some of those relationships survive an unplanned pregnancy, and some don’t. Are you saying that people shouldn’t have sex until they are one hundred percent sure they want to spend their lives together?

  8. Matt, you’re beginning to sound like your own worst enemy here, much worse in fact. What you wrote below is far dumber and far more ignorant than anything Ginger has written. Atleast she has the excuse of being incoherent and mentally unstable. Maybe you are as well!Read the post again you creep, and then please justify to us your crude attack on this woman. Please tell us, what makes you come to the conclusion that this woman is in the wrong merely because she expects her ex to pay child support?

  9. Obviously they cant afford a child, they cant even afford to look after themselves….Yes they are part of the problem…

  10. Chris, i think the real probem are people like you who have no compassion, or understanding of how reality works. Please step out of that prescious little bubble that you’re living in and join the rest of the world. Don’t be such a dipshit.

  11. Wow, Chris! I am a financially independant woman who has a very stable, well-paid job. My partner is the same. We are going to have a baby together in three months. If we should ever decide to break up in the future for some reason (which hopefully will never happen), does that mean my partner has no finacial responsibility whatsoever for the child to which he contributed half of creating??? What Chris, so it’s all MY responsibility to pay formy child’s diapers, clothing, food and college tuition?? I don’t fucking think so.

  12. Wow… sorry, my post didn’t really have much to do with the OP but I’m glad I brought it up! This should be interesting…Matt~ You can go fuck yourself! I am NOT on welfare; I have a very good job that I love and enjoy and another part time job in the summer. I don’t NEED my ex’s money to raise and take care of our son but I am entitled to it as I didn’t make him on my own. I fought for 6 freakin years to get support out of him and 2 months after I finally got it, he went and got fired. As for you being so crass about me ‘opening my legs’, you don’t know shit about me or my past. And I might as well send out a big FUCK YOU to Chris as well. I hope neither one of you ever has any thing to do with creating a child. You are both obviously to selfish to handle that.Thank you Miranda, NMH and Poop for coming to my rescue and helping to make my points. 🙂

  13. Rest assured, Matt. Nobody EVER liked you. You’re not always a complete idiot, which is why you’re tolerated. But you ARE (almost) always a complete asshole.

  14. Chris, you know the old saw about what happens when you ASSUME. How do you know this woman, or any other random woman, can’t take care of herself AND her children. I, for example, am quite capable of providing for my children with no assistance from my ex husband OR the taxpayers. But I STILL expect him to pay child support.
