I have had it this awful city and I haven’t been able to properly word how I feel until I looked Halifax up on urbandictionary.com.
Everything written below accurately describes my feelings for Halifax. Enjoy 🙂
“The capital of Nova Scotia and the largest city in Atlantic coast Canada.
Also the dreariest place in Canada, well known for being chock full of military types and all that goes with it. Liked by those who’ve never been anywhere else…i.e locals.
Downtown is a concrete jungle with little done to preserve it’s history, absolutely nothing to do or see and mainly full of unfriendly, ignorant hillbillies (I would add in Toronto girls here too)…transplanted into an urban environment. High unemployment too. ‘Deliverance’ in the city.
‘Night life’ constitutes various bars and clubs full of aforementioned types which is about as much fun as being skinned alive and then lying in a bath of salt water afterwards.
Halifax official motto: ‘riches from the sea’.
It should actually be ‘effluent from the sea’ “

Bitches like this get very ultra-boring after a while. Please don’t complain, just fucking move!!
Opinions are like, well you know…we’ve all got ’em.
The author of this review and the OP are entitled to theirs.
Here’s mine: Having lived in and visited many Canadian cities it was a great relief to actually move back here to a great city by the sea! Concrete jungle? Ever been to Toronto? Montreal? Vancouver? Little done to preserve historic buildings? Most were blown away in the Halifax explosion!
If you approach something with a negative attitude then all you will see are the negative aspects. A broader perspective reveals what a jewel this city actually is. I fail to see the purpose of living somewhere that is so unpleasant. Life is too short to live it unhappy. That’s why I moved back here. (Perhaps those who are unhappy here should take steps to live somewhere they would be happy before it is too late.)
So much for the author’s theory of this place only being liked by locals who have never been anywhere else.
Oh no ! Not “military types”! People in the military are some of the most polite and friendly people I’ve met here. Don’t be hatin’.
Oh no! Urbandictionary.com!
What ever will we do??????
Here’s what Effluent from the sea says on UD.
The lamest bitch ever bitched on The Coast Bitch Board. Written by an oh so lame CFA, who whined and moaned about Halifax.
Got 126 cities pinned in 31 countries – and I could but wouldn’t live anywhere else. Halifax may not be perfect, but it’s a good blend of pros & cons.
Oceanlady, I have never agreed with you up until this point. Well said. Our history resides in places outside of the downtown area. However, one just needs to travel just outside of the downtown core to see many pre-WW II homes, etc. to prove the history of this city.
I’d just like to point out that the Urban Dictionary has a definition for a Mississippi Handbag, Donkeypunch, and The Shocker. Not exactly a place you should be getting information from. Just a test to see if you actually read it, where will my balls end up if I give you a Mississippi Handbag?
Just for a reference it also says of Halifax (also the best reviewed definition by the way): “The capital of Nova Scotia, the hub of the maritimes [sic].
Halifax is home to weird hip hop artists like Sixtoo and Buck 65.”
Looks like kay found the urbandictionary.
Military types eh? Halifax IS a military city and ALWAYS has been! This city was built around military installments (Citadel Hill, York Redoubt, and the battery in Point Pleasant Park not to mention the Largest Canadian Naval Base on the east coast). If not for the Military, Halifax wouldn’t be the city it is today.
Lived in London, ON, Toronto, Chicago, and Halifax. I moved back to Halifax from Chicago and turned down a job offer in Montreal. Why? Because of all those cities, Hali is the nicest balance of the pros and cons: (relatively) low crime, still affordable housing prices, restaurants that easily compete with Toronto and Chi, fantastic live music scene, friendly people (compared to Ontario and Chicago), great parks. Harbor is smelly? Yep. Council ineffective? Yep. Provincial and small-minded at times? Yep. But still better.
Hey OP, if you don’t like it here, you have 3 options: 1) move, 2) get involved in local politics and try to change it, of 3) suck it up, princess.
Concrete Jungle, eh? Within 20 minutes of the ‘downtown’ you can be in a Provincial Park fishing for trout, go another 5 minutes and be deer hunting.
Oh, great, now I’m just reinforcing the “hillbilly” stereotype.
Go back to wherever. I’m not a local but Halifax will do just fine.
Wow….now that BITCH is the definition of effluent….verbal diarrhea……pure bullshit.
Yeah, Halifax fucking rules! No other city in the world, I believe, offers so much with so little. I’ve been everywhere, man, and there’s really no place like Halifax!
On the other hand, it can feel a little small and redundant at times. Especially being born and raised here and rarely living elsewhere, though the few times I have lived elsewhere, I missed this place.
muauauahah good bitch i like it its fucken funny
You should see my post on urbandictionary about Dartmouth! haha.
