Apartment hunting on kijiji and trying to find an affordable place in a decent location is like trying to catch a fart in a windstorm. The most shit-hole in the wall you can imagine is at least $750/month. Heat and hot water is rarely included. It will say Dartmouth, until you click open the ad, and then you see it is Primrose, or Pinecrest or Jackson Road or insert crime-ridden area. You look though the photos of the joint and it’s always really trashy looking. Peeling Linoleum floors, ugly dated 70’s fridge and stove. Then these slumlords have the nerve to say “no partiers,” “no loud music,” “no smoking?” Are you fucking kidding me? You think you’re gonna tell me how to live now? Who do these landlords think they are??? You don’t have the right to tell me how to live my life. The Residential Tenancy Act trumps any special rules you may wish to stipulate as a landlord, rendering them null and void. So make all the rules you want, asshole. I’ll lie to your fucking face if I want. It’s not against the law to smoke in my own home, which I pay rent for…and it’s not illegal to play loud music before 11 pm. So deal with it, fuckface. You should BE so lucky someone is willing to rent your roach motel for the exorbitant prices you’re asking. FUCK YOU! —Your next tenant

  1. I was wondering about the no smoking thing I was looking at a place once and they said you can’t even smoke on the balcony. This was a fairly upscale place so I though no smoking in the unit Ok, but the balcony is outside.

  2. Re not smoking on balcony. Don’t blame the landlords on that one.

Blame rests with the second-hand-smoke hysteria…

  3. MAN!! I would LOVE to go to court with you and watch you wither after all your keyboard warrior talk!! Where can I start…the 11pm noise “law”? so because you seem to throw the Tenancy act around, maybe you should do a bit of research into noise by law…which doesn’t have a time limit. in fact, the wording of the by law covers the “reasonable enjoyment” of ones property at ALL times without being made uncomfortable. so jackass…that means if you are making excessive noise at Lunch…you can still be served a noise complaint. Whether you believe it or not, YOU DONT OWN the property or the building. That is owned by the person ALLOWING you to pay fair market price for the time period you agree to live in. If that person wishes you to not smoke on their property or their house, and you refuse to abide by it…find another place to live. Cherry pick the Tenancy Act all you want, but you cannot ruin the value of a person’s property and not pay for it. you are a douchebag of the WORST calibre.

  4. You seem like the EXACT type of tenant those “bad” areas are looking for OP. Shove your hypocrisy up your ass….with your cigarettes and a copy of the tenancy act, then fart repeatedly to attain the noise level you desire…

  5. My apartment is a pretty nice place. The landlord/owner seem to give a damn. 700 for a 2 bdrm in a decent area far away from North End Dartmouth with heat/hot water included. I’m mostly quiet, pay my rent on time, don’t have a ton of people over (self-awareness…you live in an apartment, not ideal for parties anyway)

When I signed the lease I signed a stipulation that said I wouldn’t smoke weed in my unit. I don’t smoke it every day, maybe once every 2 weeks or so, but it has never been a problem. Long story short, not being a douchebag can go a long way.

  6. @Ho!st
My landlord is a really nice landlord. He lives in the building with us :). My 2 bedroom is $650 a month.

  7. Cuja12 is correct. So many people believe that untruth. You can play your music at any time of the day but at a respectable volume. What about the poor guy who works nights and sleeps during the day? What about his right to some peace and quiet? Most people work days but some work nights. They have a right to peace and quiet and the right to call in a noise complaint. You want to blow the roof off your abode? Move to the country where your neighbor is a mile away asshole.

  8. “It’s not against the law to smoke in my own home, which I pay rent for…”

No no no NO NO!! It’s not YOUR own home. Someone else worked their ass off to buy that place, respect it.

Shitty fucking tenants like you is why we all have to pay through the roof for a decent place.

  9. “Someone else worked their ass off to buy that place”

lol, their rich parents and/or foreign investment money cosigned for it 99% of the time. Tenants are the ones working their asses off to pay for it.

Welcome to HRM though. Student loans subsidize the market. It’s a train wreck.

  10. Nobody wants to smell your nasty cigarette smoke. Nobody wants to smell LIKE your nasty cigarette smoke either. Respect the other tenants in the building who are paying ridiculous rent to have to live in the same building as a disrespectful idiot like you.

  11. yes but your nasty smoking habit is killing my lungs if i have to breathe it on your balcony. Chances are it drifts in my upstairs window as you are below me or next to me. That is not hysteria but truth. Your rights end where mine begin, asshole.
