I’d like to preface this by saying that I’m not a teacher nor do I work in the education system. I’m writing this because I’ve read far too many news articles, and status updates, and comments about the work-to-rule situation and am bored to death of the parents that blame their child’s bad grades or inability to get extra help so that they excel in their studies on teachers.
Why are teachers expected to give extra help to classes of 30+ students? Shouldn’t that be reserved for students with serious academic struggles (ie: at risk of failure)? Since when did parents get to wash their hands of their child’s education? Parents are ultimately responsible for their child’s development and that includes their education. Teachers are there to help, not take on the entirety of this burden for them. Education extends beyond the classroom and it requires parental involvement. It’s time to step up and do your part. —Sick of Lazy Parents

I thought it took a village to raise a child.
Apparently all it takes is two extra vacation days…
Hahahahahahahahaha!!!! With today’s bubble wrapped kids & their helicopter parents? They need all the fucking help they can get.
Great idea, in theory. What happens though to the children whose parents never finished high school, or can barely read, or are speaking in a different language at home? What about those children of parents with disabilities or illnesses where spending an hour a day teaching is not physically possible? As a former teacher it’s our JOB to teach. The curriculum was designed so that everyone gets exposed to the same information. From there it is the teachers job to ensure that curriculum is delivered in a way that every child understands. So, when it comes to what is taught in the classroom, it sure as hell IS the job of the teacher to teach. That’s why we have BEds.
Nice try NSTU troll. Just do the job you signed up for including ALL the WTR stuff. Enough of this crap. Some parents can help and some can’t and a child shouldn’t be penalized. You lot claim to be teachers so TEACH FFS.
Ok, then I will take full responsibility for teaching my child, my kids will be taught what I was taught……..therefore, lets take away PD days and replace them with my dusty notebooks.
The schools do have “extra help” and “resource classes” wouldn’t surprise me if Mr So and So’s 100k a year salary takes precedent over hiring resource teachers, Parents should do more, but then again with both parents working out of the home, and family unfriendly working hours becoming the norm, Do they really want the few hours every other day, that they get to actually see their kids, to be tooth pulling time, while they try to teach an elephant to climb a tree?
@Rubyjaye, your comment did not for far enough. They have a BEd to get in the door. Then once in they get MSc’s and or PHd’s (a total of 3) just so they can have the highest pay grade. Never mind that these extra designations may or may not make them a better teacher or be useful in their teachables (not really a word, but the educators use the term) so long as the degree is “recognized” and gives them the bump.
