Taxes: advocating higher taxes does not mean advocating an 80% tax rate. At the same time, lower taxes aren’t always good if they only benefit the rich, and if corporate taxes are already competitive (which they are). Higher taxes (especially the GST) is also needed if we have any interest in balancing the budget and financing programs for future generations (unless you don’t give two shits about your current/future spawn, and their spawn).
Health care: making things more difficult for health care workers implies that fewer will choose to become health care workers, which implies an accentuation of shortages of doctors and nurses: not good for an aging society. Streamlining is important, but so is subsidized pharmacare, dental and eye care. Right now Canadians pay the highest out of pocket health care costs apart from the US, mostly due to the cost of prescription drugs.
I actually agree re: climate change and education. Canada won’t put much of a dent into the climate problem, and the only thing it can offer is leadership (but who really follows Canada’s lead). As for education, the biggest problem here is the commodification of university. People are essentially buying $40,000 pieces of paper. And in general they have no skills to back it up. We need to start mandating all university programs to have unpaid coop internships for credit, so students actually get to see how the real world functions before they jump into it. Universities have become the modern high school, and high schools typically have coop programs and take your child to work days. This could be the equivalent version of that for university aged people.

Maybe we do pay a lot of taxes, but the top 0.01% of the income distribution has seen their share of total wealth rise astronomically since the early 80s, while the middle and lower classes have suffered. The countries you’re referring to as being the most taxed (Scandinavian ones and some continental European ones) have similar outcomes as we do in terms of employment rates, unemployment rates, and earnings growth, but lower poverty rates and less inequality. I’m not sure what their purchasing power is compared to here (probably they pay more for gas and oil) but I’m sure the security of health and person more than compensates for not having as much consumptive junk as your neighbour. We’re a fucking society of hoarders that winces anytime we see our neighbours with something we can’t have. And then we beg the government for income splitting and a one cent less in taxes for every dollar spent on garbage. Pretty pathetic if you ask me.

There were three companies in the competetion, Lockheed with the F-35, Boeing with the X-32, and MacDonald-Douglas. MacDonald-Douglas’s submission was rejected quickly due to the complexity of its design. Lockheed and Boeing both made prototypes for testing and the result was the F-35 was chosen because it was more versatile with STOVL (Short Take Off and Verticle Landing) capability. So the aircraft wasn’t plucked out of thin airas the opposition would like you to believe. In fact if you check the date, you’ll see it was a Liberal government who got involved with it from the beginning.
