My girlfriend and I went for supper last night at her sister’s. We ended up having a few drinks (as it’s the festive season) so we got a cab home and left our car on the street. The responsible thing to do, right? When I got a cab back this morning to pick up our vehicle I had two parking tickets. One for the winter ban ($50) and one because the meter ran out ($25). I can accept the ‘meter ran out’ fine, but it didn’t even fucking snow last night. Sure, have your precious little ban, but if it doesn’t fucking snow then you shouldn’t be fining people. If it snows, fine everyone. This is nothing more than a cash grab and a scam. You don’t get speeding tickets because you “might” speed and you shouldn’t get parking fines because it “might” snow. Fucking ridiculous. —T

  1. Not sure how this came as a suprise to you, this isn’t a new policy that has been put into place it has been in effect for at least the last 5 years during the winter months. It’s great that you took a cab but you should have parked your car somewhere off the road.

  2. $75 in tickets vs. possibly killing an innocent person. You’re right OP, you should have drove drunk! idiot.
Parking ban is at all time….not just when it’s snowing. Cash grab…yup…but it needs to be done. Also last night was a big storm serge…so if we had of gotten snow, your car still would have been on the road, illegally.

  3. Jesus Christ, here we go. The winter parking ban exists and will continue to exist all winter. This is not news. Either you or your girlfriend should have opted out of drinking so you would have a DD.

And saying you’ll drive drunk next time is stupid. Risking your life, your girlfriend’s life and every single fucking person you drive past on the way home after you’ve had some drinks is definitely more costly than $75 in fines and some cab fare. Way to stick it to the man.

Planning ahead really isn’t that hard.

  4. Surely, with anticipating the possibility of seasonally festive drinks necessitating 2 cab rides, it’s not such a stretch to conclude the safest place to park one’s car would be at home?

  5. You should have taken the chance.
People have been doing it for years !
The cops can’t be everywhere…& think of what a great loud bitchin’ rant you’d have if you get pulled over & charged with DUI !

  6. What everybody else said.
DD or leave your car home, remember 0.05 gets your car towed (tow & storage = apx $200), and you walk.
Using $75.00 in fines to justify drunk driving, pathetic.

•licence reinstatement fee of $106.80 (your cost)
•you might also be required to be re-take any and all of your driver’s tests, including written, road, and vision tests.

    2nd offence, within a 10-year period:
    •a fine of $600 to $2000

•completion of an Addiction/Drug Dependency Services assessment program ($390)
    •licence reinstatement fee ($106.80)
•you must re-take your driver’s tests: written, road, and vision tests.

    3rd offence, within a 10-year period:

•completion of an Addiction/Drug Dependency Services assessment program ($390)
    •licence reinstatement fee ($106.80)
•you must re-take your driver’s tests: written, road, and vision tests.

    4th offence, within a 10-year period:
•permanent revocation in addition to all of the penalties provided under the Criminal Code of Canada

    * Persons prosecuted by indictment for offences under Sections 253, 254 of the Criminal Code (Canada) are liable to receive a prison term of up to five years. Persons prosecuted by way of summary conviction under these sections are liable to receive a prison term of up to six months.

  7. maybe if people in HRM weren’t so “entitled” and rediculous and used their brains and parked off the road when they needed to; we wouldnt have this stupid ban in the first place.

There are forever people parked on my street, a few times the plow had to go around cars and plow them in, and guess what!!??? NO FINES on the window!! Yet they ticket on clear nights??

    Je suis CONFUSED.

  8. OP, you deserve the tickets. You could have called Operation RedNose (a free service) to drive your GF and yourself home in your own car.

  9. Dear Hugo Phirst…. nice copy and paste job, but that never happens, just look at the retard that has dozens of charges, drives with no license, no insurance, no registration…. he is free to roam all tanked up! Noone is doing a thing, has he even seen the inside of the jail?

  10. Whoops, I did forget to post my source.

I only know 2 people who got nailed, both first timers, both got a $1,000.00 fine and the rest. Both “learned their lesson”, and as far as I know, never drove after drinking again.

Frenchie, you can say the same about murders and rapist too. It’s not the laws fault, it’s not the cops fault, it’s the fault of the courts (meaning, lawyers and judges).

  11. nearly 200 tickets issued so far….
people don’t really seem to be paying attention…
which means they’ll be paying in the long run either way.

  12. “People have been doing it for years” They sure have! The lucky ones don’t kill or maim some innocent person! Having lost a dear friend to drunk driving (at Christmas) I can’t stress enough the stupidity of more’s statement. There’s nothing like getting a call from your friend’s bereaved family on Christmas morning with the horrible opposite of glad tidings. Is killing someone really worth driving after a few drinks? Only a selfish alcoholic moron would choose to drink and drive when we ALL know it is wrong!!!

  13. Imbibe your Christmas spirits at the Old Triangle.

They have a new ‘valet parking’ service where a bar employee will take your keys, go and fetch your car and park it in one of the waterfront parking lots where you can leave it overnight, avoiding various parking tickets.

“Thank you” Brian Doherty, publican and musician extraordinaire.

ps I am not an employee, just a loyal patron.

  14. do the employees track which moved which car?
I would need that assurance before taking advantage of this service….
what with some people being such connoisseurs of liberating all things portable.

  15. CE, I occasionally patronize the Triangle, thanks for the heads up.

I’ve enjoyed a beer and philosophical debate there with Ivan a couple of times, maybe we can do the same (I still want a bitchers summit:))

Plus there are Safe Ride Home programs in parts of Nova Scotia, Operation Red Nose is just one.

  16. I’ll never forget going to the hospital at the age of 6 to visit my sister after a drunk driver had hit her, she had to be airlifted to hospital and my parents were told she had no brain activity while in her comma, and all they could do was pray…. spent a year in a back brace…her whole face was scared to hell. But she woke up and can walk today…with metal rods still in her back…wish I could say the same for the 21 year old girl he killed 2 km’s down the highway.

  17. Just on your post, RC, my aunt and uncle were hit by a piece of crap that decided driving down the wrong way of the 102 was a GREAT idea while drunk. While driving with a suspended license. In fact, it wasn’t even his car — his common law wife had loaned him hers.

My uncle was black and the driver of the car was white. After the two cars blew up (someone had pulled my aunt out before the cars blew up) they couldn’t tell who was who. The only comfort I have is the fact that the drunken piece of scum that hit my family members was still alive after he hit them and was screaming to get him out of the car. Then it blew up.

I don’t feel one bit sorry for that piece of trash. What I DO feel bad about are my cousins who were left without parents because some drunk couldn’t control his urge to drive and because his stupid STUPID wife decided to loan him her car and for people like RC’s sister and that poor girl that died and her friends and family.

So yeah, you *are* a disgusting piece of shit, OP.

  18. I’m totally digging Kitty’s wrath-tastic, venomous bitching these days.
    🙂

    fire’s a burning….

  19. OP you’re a fucking idiot. The responsible thing would have been to park it down on the waterfront – $6 parking overnight – and taken a cab home, or used operation red nose, or how about using some common sense and taking a cab to the restaurant and home again. Any of them would have saved you $75.

I don’t know how you could possibly not know about the winter parking ban, and I really don’t know how you could think that driving drunk would be a reasonable way to save $75, seeing as you could injure or kill yourself or others, not to mention the fines if you’re caught. A. FUCKING. IDIOT.

Ask someone who has lost a loved one to impaired driving what they think you should do. See what kind of answer you get.

  20. Ocean chick….you really need to LEARN TO READ ! ! ! ! !
Not just take a sentence or a couple of words OUT OF CONTEXT from an ENTIRE POST !
    JESUS H FUCKIN’ Christ woman, have you never heard of S A R C A S M ? ? ? ? ?

  21. It was either that or a Screen capture from “Ilsa , She-Wolf of the S.S.” Artistic merit trumped topicality, and really, aren’t we all happier for that.

  22. Really sorry to hear about your aunt and uncle PK. Drunk driving takes too many lives and is so unnecessary.

  23. parking bans are effective, whether there is snow or not. if you chose to leave your ride on the street, did you think a good fairy would watch it for you. it is in place in case it snows, and remember, this is after al, nova scotia, where weather can be at most unpredictable.

  24. Hugo,

I enjoy the atmosphere at the Old Triangle.

Another place I frequent is Celtic Corner in Dartmouth. It doesn’t quite qualify as my neighbourhood pub because it’s about a fifteen minute walk up towards the Lake Banook area which is home for me. Ideally it would be just around the corner so I could nip in for a ‘swift half’ after a warm afternoon working in the veggie garden.

Bitcher’s Summit? One of these days.

  25. We’re practically neighbors, El Jefe. Which side of Lake B? The Braemar Superstore or Crichton Park side?

  26. Drunk driving never a good idea. No question. And here’s to goping the OP was being emphatic and wouldn’t actually drive drunk.

The ban is a cash grab, plain and simple. Beyond the many other reasons, one fact trumps all arguments: When it snows, the side streets (and many main streets) are not cleared to the curb anyway. One swipe down the middle of the street and that was it – all over town last year. Remember? So… if they aren’t even planning to plow where the cars are parked, the ban has nothing to do with safety (as Ken Reashor claims) and everything to do with grabbing cash.

  27. wasn’t there a storm last night?
    a massive one?
where if it turned cold enough, we’d probably be shoveling ourselves out this morning?

gee I wonder why the police would be concerned about cars violating the ban. it just doesn’t make sense.

  28. So you’re threatening to drive drunk and risk the lives of innocent people just because you didn’t follow the rules?
Just because you don’t agree with the winter parking ban doesn’t mean tickets magically won’t find you if you CHOOSE to break the rule. I hope someone slashes your tires.

  29. Your “meter ran out” one is a little odd. When did you park on the road? You don’t have to pay for a meter after 6pm!

Also, if you’re going to drink, take the bus there or a cab and you won’t have to leave your car! It’s not like the parking ban is a new thing.

  30. just wanted to point out that you spent 2 cab fares (one to get home and one to go get your car). The better solution is a) realize you will be drinking b) take a cab TO the venue c) take a cab HOME. Less wasted time, no need to park. Problem solved with less money, less hassle. Don’t blame others for your lack of foresight.

  31. Not to mention, with a criminal record, it is very difficult to get a government job, to travel out of country, to be bonded. So for the sake of $20-60 you can save yourself a lot of trouble.

  32. I looooovvve the righteousness and perfection of posters here, just love it! They always plan ahead, never get caught in a difficult situation, never make mistakes, never do dumb things, have never done anything illegal, never say things facetiously like “driving drunk next time!,” are never late for anything, never drink too much, never make spelling mistakes, are never wrong, never complain about silly things just to get it off their chest (since they always “do something about it”), etc… basically, everyone who posts here is so fucking perfect. Wish I could be a regular again so I can be perfect, too.

By the way, I’m not the OP, seeing as I live in Edmonton now and they don’t have a silly winter parking ban here (though the plowing kind of sucks).

  33. I wonder if any of you have been to any of the other cities that don’t have parking bans, get a shit load more snow, and still manage to get by some how.
Also, I see the implied point of OP. I think that some losers who are faced with a $50 ticket or driving home drunk might choose driving home. And, yes, we do live in a world full of these people. Winter parking ban is a real dumb fucking idea, especially downtown.

  34. dog love, you’re missing the golden rule of LTWWB: if someone has a different opinion than you or says something facetiously and is not a regular poster, they are “a disgusting piece of shit” or “a fucking moron.” Rather than, you know, posting a bitch on a Bitch board to let some steam off, posters are always supposed to “fucking deal with it / fucking do something about it / shut the fuck up.” But I guess that’s what Bitchin’s all about.

  35. q, old buddy, got any of that white shit out there yet. heard from someone it snowed like a bitch last night(dec.23), we have had fuck all here, and i for one am glad. and yes bud, we are all fucking angels here, you alread knew that, as lady z showed us on her reply to a bitch earlier in the day. i have a standing offer of a half mill in life insurances benifits, to the first one to come here, show me their fucking wings(real) on their back, and a signed letter from whatever god they have, stating that they are, indeed a real angel. SO FAR, NO ONE HAS SHOWED UP, WONDERING WHY????
