my family just moved into an apartment from a house, and all our lives we have been composting/recycling. then we move here and they tell us we have to find somewhere else to put our compost/recyables because they wont fucking pay to get it picked up. well fuck you. we have been composting our whole lives and now we have to stop because you wont pay a fucking extra dime. well there teaching everyone a great lesson, its okay to not care as long as your saving money!

  1. In the HRM, as far as I know, it’s illegal for your landlord NOT to provide you with a green bin and recycle. Please research it! I bet there is something you can do!

  2. we have 1 green bin for the 100 people that live int he building it is not worth using

  3. It’s fucking biodegradable, so what if it goes to the landfill. Think of it as fertilizer to make the landfill pretty.

    Cranky: “Away”

BroTim, I tend to agree with you on that…the only downside to tossing compostable materials that I see is that it takes up space in the landfill, and it’s not getting reused as compost of course. Either way, tossing organics down the chute is far from the worst thing that could happen to the environment.

  5. Whomever said it’s illegal to not provide composting services as a landlord is right. I actually had a chat with the people from the city about that a few years back when i was working for an environmental organization.

Call the city and dime the fuckers out. Onus isn’t on you to compost (they can’t force individual tenants in apartments to compost) — onus is on the landlord to provide composting services. Whether or not anyone does compost in the building isn’t the landlord’s responsibility, but they have to provide the opportunity within the building.

My building has a huge compost bin in the garbage room. They also provide new tenants with mini green bins — they cost under 10 bucks at walmart. I’d say it’s enough to encourage the vast majority in my [larger] building to compost because the bins are always full. They also told us that all the garbage/recyclables and compost is gone through by their contractor to make sure everything is where it’s supposed to be. i’m sure otherwise they’d be fined by the city.
