So have you heard how you can make a quick 11,000 dollars? All you have to do is hide a coffee in your coat, or jacket, take the bus and when the bus hits a bump or the driver has to brake suddenly, the coffee spills onto your body and you sue the city. Don’t worry, instead of kicking you off the bus and or giving you a fine like they do in “normal” cities (because you’re not allowed to bring coffee in take out cups on the busses), here they reward you with lots of money!! Man we have the stupidest people running this city. No backbone, jellyfish. —Coffee, Tea, or Stupidity?
This article appears in Apr 4-10, 2013.

…besides who would the coffee, tea, etc if any fell on the bus floor or seats? The buses are filthy, inside and out.The city must’ve laid off the bus cleaners.
Times this winter the windows were covered with mud, salt, sleet you couldn’t see your stop…Sure the winter that was to be expected.I’ve been on buses that covered with crap i couldn’t see out the windows.
Eh. Halifax is an odd ball when it comes to rules around drinks and food on buses.
Any other public transport system I’ve been on (big ones like OCtranspo and the TTC) don’t have any rules banning food or drinks. I was also allowed to bring food/drink in disposable cups on the bus in Quebec (city) and I couldn’t find any rules banning food/drink on the metro in Montreal….
I can see why metro transit doesn’t want food/drink on the busses (save for drinks in reusable/sealable cups, though I was ‘warned’ by a driver about my resealable smoothie cup *eyeroll*), but it’s really nice in these other cities to be able to. Anddddd their ridership is A LOT higher than MTs and they don’t seem to think it’s an issue, so….
Also, as per bus cleanliness — buses get dirty throughout the day. I find the dartmouth routes in the more, uh, ‘ghetto’ areas usually get dirtier faster inside…. All buses are cleaned nightly. It’s impractical to clean them throughout the day beyond what a driver, at the end of their route, can manage (pick up papers, etc…). I’d say it’s just as much the fault of the cretins that use the bus as their own personal landfill as it is Metro Transit. And they can’t just hose them down during the day when they’re in operation all day.
OP, could you provide a link to a newspaper article about this? I googled but I couldn’t find one.
If this is legit it’s just another example of the courts rewarding people for their stupidity.
Was probably Wheels driven that bus. To busy dreaming of an empty bus to notice someone sneaking a steaming hot coffee on the bus.
Bullshit they’re cleaned nightly. I’ve seen the same crap on the floor and smears on the windows a few days running when I took it regularly.
An empty bus is a happy bus all day long.
