… IF I SEE ONE MORE “SIDEWALK CLOSED” SIGN I’M GONNA SCREAM. For years now, every city block, every time you turn a corner: “sidewalk closed … sidewalk closed … use other side.” I have spent afternoons zigzagging from one side of a street to the other and back again, block after city block. Why not create a temporary dedicated pedestrian lane for each project like they did for the construction site at SG and Birmingham streets? We pedestrians don’t take up that much room. —Extremely Fed-up Lifelong Nondriver

  1. Shocking! I just noticed that the controversial figure montrealman has been expunged. Love him or hate him I have to admit that he did contribute more than his share of content. His posts numbered over 10,000 if I remember correctly.

    Adieu montealman!

  2. … Or maybe (s)he’s on vacation…
or maybe (s)he’s swimming at the bottom of the basin.

All I can say is, Woot Woot!

And yes, as per the paper today there are a lot of businesses getting fucked over with all the construction lately. Has to happen sometime though…
    whatcha gonna do?

  3. I propose we all raise “un petite verre” in mm’s honour this evening. Whether you mourn or rejoice in the demise of his persona is strictly up to you.

  4. Ah, Montrealman. I knew him, Horatio. A fellow of infinite jest….No wait that was Yorick.

  5. Oddly, MM is gone yet Son of a Duke is new… Let us don our deerstalkers and light our briars (loaded with your choice of smokables)! WHO REALLY IS this Son of a Duke?!
    *ominous muzak*

BTW, welcome Son of a Duke!

  6. ^^^ I assure you I am not the reincarnation of montrealman if that is what you were implying Jesus.
If mm does resurface I suspect he will call himself something like Dr. Whippet PhD. He finds it irresistible to flaunt his credentials.

  7. Um . . . I’ve been away for a few days. What exactly happened to get MM “expunged?”

  8. Earlier today I noticed mm had disappeared from the Top Commenters list so I clicked on his name below one of his previous posts. His account and all of his post history seemed to have been deleted.

But now I see he is back at the head of the class as top commenter and his account seems to be intact. Very strange.

    A resurrection?

  9. Angel: You don’t have to do anything anymore to get banned. It’s like Moscow circa 1938, here. There’s an old joke from the Gulag days. A newly exiled Muscovite meets his former neighbor in a lead mine in Kolyma who asks “Well, Anatoly Pavlovitch, what did you do to wind up here” ” I did nothing, Denis Plutarchovitch. Nothing, and they gave me ten years redemptive labour” “Ha ha, Tovaritsch. Now I now you are lying. For Nothing, they only give you five years”

    Jesus: I got it.

  10. Well, it sure isn’t like the olden days around here anymore; all the great commenters have been banned or disappeared.

    *Sigh.*

  11. I have, once. It was ignored. I re-submitted it asking they respond at least with an eff off-go pound sand, but still – silence.

For an “indy” paper, oddly it’s censorship and content control that seems to be the foundation. This is followed by an absolute disregard for journalist standards and practices.

Free speech is being ripped from our founding hands by those who followed us. Unfortunately, those who pay no attention to the mistakes of the past are bound to repeat them.

The good news is that we will be around long enough to say, “We told you so! Now change my shitty diaper!”

  12. The old board was such fun. We even had moderators who were good sports but always let us have our say. For such a liberal paper as the Scroat, they’re an intolerant bunch of old ladies with political correctness canes.

This moderator has posted some of the grossest bitches I’ve ever read. Yet she has the ability to ban anyone on her whim alone, even when the comments are perfectly banal.

Editor of the Scroat: Please free us from this terrible moderator, please!!! Do we have to start a petition for this?

  13. Maybe The Coast is in preparation for being bought out by that big regional company that starts with “I”.

  14. I love it when adults pout like children when they don’t get their way.

For years its been the overall attitude that the Coast was nothing but a shitrag, good only for drying bus seats and the only reason people came here was for the LTWWB and flamewars. Now the Moderator has banned a handful or two of post retirement children that just can’t get along with anyone but themselves as a sacrifice for a larger, much more diverse and less insulting younger readership pool.

I would imagine Team Coast gets more then a laugh out of every complaint and email/post directed at them. Does anyone really think the Mod cares? Do they lose sleep at night too thinking about all the posters that have been “unfairly” banned?

  15. I’m retired. I stroke my whippet, toast my scones, touch up my faculty members, and curate my Eagles’ Nest.

Oh, Just the usual memorabilia and bric-a-brac accumulated through a lifetime of peripatetic lecturing through the historic capitals of Mittel Europa. Postcards, photographs, first day covers, travel brochures, purloined silverware, a saucy lampshade or two. When curfew rings the lot shall be donated to St. Mary’s University, my alma mater, for inclusion in a reading room to be named after – moi.

    Cheerio!

‘Will the real Montrealman please stand up? Please stand up?’

(Even better Michael Jackson impersonation including 3/4 of a twisted Moonwalk):
    ‘We want you back!’

From Montrealman’s first post, way back when he was discussing the subject of the Halifax Underclass – several years now – there was something intriguing about our good sir that many of us recognized. I can’t say I always agreed with him but I have grown quite fond of him although he has been unfairly muzzled over the last few months. He never suffers fools gladly. No, indeedy, not our MM.
