So I get home Saturday to find a letter on my door stating that Metro Transit wants to move the Lacewood Bus Terminal. It seems “the existing Lacewood Terminal on Willet Street can no longer accommodate the increasing needs of HRM residents in the area”.
First of all, I haven’t noticed any overcrowding at this terminal. There are usually more people waiting for the bus at Wal-mart in Bayer’s Lake than at Lacewood.
Second of all, I live 3 minutes from this terminal and use it to get to work and all points within the city. Moving it away would seriously fuck me over. It’s present location, at the center of Clayton Park by the shopping area, is ideal for commuters who do their banking, grocery shopping, and whatever else here. Not to mention it’s close to Timmies so I can grab a coffee and then be at the bus stop in 2 mins.
The only other suitable location I can think of would be in the parking lot of the shopping plaza and I don’t know if that would be possible.
Bottom line, leave our Bus Terminal alone! Meeting Monday night at Halifax West to discuss this foolishness.

Ever think they want to be able to put more busses at the terminal and not more people? Ever think that the terminal might be too small to expand the number of busses that service it? Ever think that by expanding the service that it might benefit many people, yourself included?
Well come on guys…Metro Transit is entirely in operation to cater to the needs of just one person, namely the Bitcher, didn’t you read the Mandate as set out by Metro Transit?

Actually, I can see why they would move it. I’ve seen times where four of five buses will be on the outbound side (facing Willett)and people will have to walk out into the lane to catch a bus because there’s really only enough room for about three buses at either stop, and considering that there’s at least 10-15 different routes that service that particular terminal, it’s about bloody time.
Clayton park sucks anyways !!!! I think people really are to lazy to walk a couple extra minutes !!!

I see what Dr. F is saying — there’s usually major congestion of busses around rush hour.
I think the terminal *is* in a great location, and it’s central to everything and sort of in a “middle point” for all parts of CP (including the westward expansion areas), but if they need more room…I’m just wondering where they’d put a new one.
Honestly, heh, I’d love it if they moved it up Lacewood a bit, closer to BLIP. That way I wouldn’t have to transfer — I used to live super close to the current terminal and it was NICE to not have to transfer to get home.
Lacewood as it is cannot take any more buses. No expansion means more pissed off CP passengers. Attend the meeting, see the presentation, if you still object, by all means put in your 2 cents. That’s why they have the meeting.
It’s not about pedestrian overcrowding you pompous idiot, it’s about how many buses they can slot in. Metro Transit sucks? Why? Because this location happens to be more convenient to YOU? Get fucked.

They are looking at moving it to the Northwood site since that facility will be demolished once the Canada Games Centre opens.
That’s what I figured, Calvin. It’s a pretty good spot and close to the current terminal. GOD FORBID people’d have to walk two more minutes to get to their bus…then again, the amount of people who hop the 4 or 2 at Lacewood to get to their building at the corner of dunbrack and willet (or just half way to dunbrack and willet!) is kind of sad. *eyeroll*
It would also be nice if they put a link in, maybe. With the new land they *could* do it. I remember the chick from the HRM call centre said that there was an issue with land to put the link stop on and they’d have to figure out where to put the stop before they considered putting a link in.
They should move the whole bus terminal underground and have tunnels with moving walkways connecting it to Winston’s Pub, Applebee’s, and my house. If there’s any money leftover, we might consider a tunnel to where Pretty Kitty lives, too!
Q, can we connect that tunnel to my house too? I am sure I can get a grant to cover that.
PK– the terminal relocation is precisely to allow for the addition of a LINK bus, and increased frequencies on the other routes. Lots more buses are coming to Clayton Park.
I wonder if anyone at Metro transit ever thought about having buses come to the terminal areas at different times ?
It seems to me that you see no buses there at all & then there are 10 or more there at exactly the same time …why not have say, 4/5 show up now & 3/5 more in 6 minutes & 4/5 more 6 -7 minutes after that ????
I actually look up Portland Street when I’m coming up Alderney at the lights to see if the 3/4 bus train is moving past Moffat’s pharmacy, so I can go str8.
Its a narrow road & the buses move like a god damned train attached by bungee cords, one slow moving behemouth behind another…SPREAD YOURSELVES OUT BY A COUPLE OF MINUTES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What they need to look into doing is adding better services to get OUT of Clayton Park, and hopefully a new terminal will lead up to this.
I take the 35 to and from work during the weekdays, but after 6:00 pm if you want to get out of the city and to Parkland Drive in a timely manner, you’ve got another thing coming, and are bound to routes such as the 4 or multiple transfers. Also, on weekends nothing really runs as effectively. Clayton Park is a great area to live and work, and its central and accessible to everything, except places that aren’t Clayton Park.
You’ve just made my day, Tim. It’s GREAT to hear there might be a link coming to CP. It’s ridiculous how long it takes on a bus to get DT compared to a car.
It takes me about 10 minutes to get DT from my apartment on Parkland when I drive, but almost an hour on the bus 🙁
I think this move is a fabulous idea, considering a new terminal = expanded routes/frequencies of existing routes which is fantastic.
I’d say leave it where it is. Rip down the building behind the existing terminal, and re-work that whole parking lot to accommodate more buses. Having terminals near groceries stores is an important part of good infrastructure. Same with warm stores to enter when you’re waiting for your bus. A few steps isn’t a big deal to most but the old lady carrying her bags, or parents with children will benefit. And the demographic of Halifax is getting older not younger. While there’re at it fix the gawd dam Timmies drive thru, that’s in that area!!
Good idea Balls, but they just spent a tonne of cash to renovate the old Topcuts and CIBC locations into an M&M’s and Wok Box, with something else to go in behind that.
Dr. Fever, One of My biggest bitch about Halifax is that there isn’t an overall plan for metro transit. They knew the terminal was going to have to grow. They should have grabbed that property while it was cheap. Locating a terminal simply due to open space, is not by design but by opportunity, and shows the lack of leadership Halifax has.
I say spend the money and do it right for the generations that *may* locate to Halifax.
Isn’t the Northcliffe property already owned by HRM? If they were to rework the parking lot of the strip mall, Balls, the city would have to purchase the land from centre corp, who owns the parking lot/strip mall.
I’m not particularly thrilled about the terminal possibly moving further away from my building because it’s a hike as it is, but if it means more bus service to the area (including link service), I’m sure I can suck it up and walk the extra 2-3 minutes 😛

With the rental income that land provides to centre corp, I doubt they’d let it go for cheap.

OK So here is another idea…..GET RID OF IT. I think Halifax has way too many bus terminals and it takes too much time for the buses to get in and out of them.
Make your transfere at the bus stop on the street instead. This concept works on Barrington Street in front of Scotia Square as it is on the street and it keeps the buses and traffic moving.
While we are at it get rid of Penhorn Mall terminal as well and move that to a similar type bus stop on the street as Scotia Square.
And Finally…..Don’t let the buses wait at these stops….Just long enough to drop and pickup passengers.
Keep the buses moving so people and traffic get to where they are going faster.
“I haven’t noticed any overcrowding at this terminal” — A have you ever beenthere at 6am on weekdays or 4pm when all the buses cant fit into the terminal and people miss connections becuase there next bus pulls away before the bus they’re on can get into a spot to “safely” let them off. Do you even know where they’re moving it to? Or are you just one of these people who just jump to the conclusion that you “might” have to walk another minute and freak out.
-AND- to the one that doesnt think CP people are lazy.. Maby not all of them. But many are, they must be, to get off the 52 just get on the 89 just to get off at the first stop on Parkland and dont even say thank you. or maybe the extra minute is just too much out of they’re precious lives. So some ARE lazy and stuck up too..
