A leisurly stroll downtown on Saturday chanced my friend and I pon two young females giving out coupons for a new “pay by the weight” stir fry grill near Reflections. They asked us if we wanted free apptizers… since I can barely afford a litre of gas anymore, let alone a bit of decent food we obliged. There was a condition though.. we had to buy a drink. Perfect we thought, between our three friends we had enough pocket change for these beautiful $10 dollar pictures of beer they were also offering.

Once we arrive at the establishment in question and find a beautiful patio table unoccupied we are approached by the waitress who explains how the pay by the weight of your stirfry works, how we get free soup etc… great. We politly explain that we are just here for the free appitizers that we were so eagerly told about and we would accompany it with a picture of beer since according to the girls giving out the flyers / coupons we needed a beverage purchase. The waitress tells us to hang on a minute and returns to tell us that we can not order alcohol without a food purchase.. and the free appies do not count.

A half hour of our precious time wasted. I can really see this newly open resturant going really far. On our way out, we see the big ten dollar picture of beer sign.. nowhere does it mention “with food purchase”… typical halifax.. scam scam fucking scam… no wonder nothign lasts around here.

  1. Don’t worry. Dumb Canadians NEED bylaws to tell them how to feel, act, behave, etc. Pay attention and you’ll see Ontario is setting the precedent not only by allowing women to go topless if they want to but they’re actually creating bylaw to ensure women can breastfeed wherever they happen to be when baby’s hungry and NO there are NO preconceptions about discretion. Look out HRM, soon enough government will pass another fucking bylaw and all of you, pro-tittie or not, can get over it.

  2. L…. when they say you have to buy a beverage they mean you have to buy alcohol and OP i think you mean pitcher of beer not picture of beer lol. And let me guess this is Tribeca, and btw this place has been open for a while people don’t usually eat there but they do have pretty good food.

  3. Actually, Elle Elle, a beverage purchase means any beverage. It’s illegal to force someone to purchase alcohol. Also, the OP wasn’t talking about Tribeca. I think it’s pretty clear (s)he’s talking about the Mongolie Grill. It’s the only “pay by weight stirfry” place in town I know about. And the nickname “MongolieHell” sort of gives it away too…

  6. OHhhhh ok well I thought it was Tribeca, because I know that they have been trying to promote their food. Anyways the beverage thing, I’ve gone into a restaurant and was told I couldn’t buy pop with for the deal, it is not illegal because technically there not forcing anyone to purchase alcohol they just can’t get the deal if they don’t!!!!!

  7. Oh and I didn’t read the name sorry, Jennie my bad, but you are worng about the beverage thing, I have friends that work in the service industry, in order to get the deal you have to purchase the alcohol its whole point so they can make money

  8. This is another case of Bait & Switch… It always amazes me that businesses do this type of thing and get away with it…Congratulations to the OP for standing up for themselves and calling them on it…
