i feel the women who made the bitch about cats being aloud in apartments but not dogs did not make a very good stand for us dog owners/renters.
cats are great cats should be allowed in apartments because they are little fuss and mess.( i wont get started on the smell of cat pee though) but there is almost no places that will rent to people with dogs in this city and i always get the same response when i ask: a couple people ruined it for everyone by not taking care of there responibilty. but i why cant landlords be open minded and have an interview process like for people. because it is extremly unfair to say no dogs because they destroy and bark ect ect. meet the dog and if it clearly not a fit or what you are looking for then at least you could say no and it be fair. but anyplace that will rent to people with any age child should rent to people with dogs because any kid is louder, messier and more destructive than any dog in a apartment.
me personally, i work from home, i have a big dog who has never been from my side, we are always together and he is quite and lazy and amazing. it took me forever to find a place that could trust that he was good, and i have in a bad and remote part of town. i wish i could move to a safer closer neighbourhood in halifax but forget it, it is impossible unless i rent a house. please.

Not going to rag on you too much for it… but spell-checker has mislead you in this case. You don’t always click on the first word it thinks you’re trying to type.
no biggie… if you were talking, I would probably not have noticed.
While I agree with the comparison to children being loud… they don’t exactly have nails or teeth that can thrash a door and bite the doorknob off. and they actually can learn to speak and understand language pretty much automatically…. without the need of a trainer.
if it is strictly a noice issue with dogs, I can understand there worries but it is still FUCKING annoying when all you hear is MEOW, MEOW, MEOW,MEOW,MEOW,MEOW,MEOW,MEOW,MEOW,MEOW,MEOW,MEOW,MEOW,MEOW,MEOW,MEOW, like SHUT THE FUCKING CAT UP!!! Same with you fucking dogs!!! but why is OK for people to let their Cats roam free around the neighbourhood and let them shit and piss all over my yard!!!!!! Here let my 115lbs dog leave a nice coiler on your front step and see how you like that.
—–Fucking angry!!!!
More to the point of the kid being more destructive than the dog… Yeah, sorry, kids are not more destructive. Dogs will gnaw, scratch, so on and so forth. Here’s the thing with kids, they listen to instruction. Dogs won’t if you have destructive dog. Last but not least; kids, if they have accidents, soil at worst their pants. Not the carpet. If your kid is being destructive in an apartment, maybe you shouldn’t be in an apartment, it’s probably due to the fact that they’re cooped up all day.
I have had two tenants with dogs. One barked whenever it couldn’t see his owner ( I was told it never barked). It also pulled apart part of the deck and ruined a post that the owner had left it tied to. I didn’t notice the damage until after the tenant was gone and they hadn’t mentioned it. The one other time I rented to a dog owner they let the dog tear apart the backyard and they mostly fixed it, but it doesn’t look like it did before. The other tenants in the building were the ones that suffered the most and have asked that I not rent to dogs anymore.
I had similar experiences to electricmayhem when I was renting my mother’s flat. I had to rip out the entire living room carpet and replace two doors because of one tenant who lied about the dog’s behavior. Neighbours next door complained about the constant barking, again, something the tenant said wouldn’t happen. So why should I believe any dog owner after almost a thousand dollars paid out in repairs?
This is sad to hear that, dog/animal owners are treating there dogs like this.( Not trg them) and if they are gone all day and they destroy things while they are out kennel them it is quite inexpensive(Home Kennel) and/or take them to a doggy day care so they get to socialize and play and get rid of all that energy!!!
Fucking Fuckers!!
If you really do have a good well behaved dog, then get your previous landlords to write you a reference letter noting that your dog didn’t do any damage/make excessive amounts of noise. Then your new potential landlords can see that you’re not just lying to get the place. Problem solved.
sad but true…. I wouldn’t want to pay a pile for a dog someone else couldn’t control.
If even 5% of population do this… every landlord is going to be hesitant. Truly, why wouldn’t they?
I’m not shelling out for anyone else’s rampant beast.
I’m with PAS – a reference letter could solve the problem unless it’s a bogus arrangement (i.e. friend poses as former landlord).
My landlord (actually a pretty cool guys as landlords go) said he wouldn’t rent to a dog owner because he’d once allowed a dog with “excellent references” to live in his house and it still caused damage. If I was in his position I would feel the same way. I am waiting to get a dog until I am actually in a good position to have one. Why should landlords have to put their property on the line to accommodate your lack of self-restraint?
If l were allowed to take a pet deposit, I would reconsider renting to dog owners.
