Fuck you, you. I lived in Toronto, from Halifax, for 3 years and changing apartments was as big a hassle, if not more! So here’s an idea – GO BACK TO THAT HELLHOLE CALLED TORONTO!!

I personally understand what the person from Toronto is saying. There is basically nothing but shitholes in this city and all a landlord has to do is check for employment. I personally REFUSE to give my SIN # and bank info to anyone this day and age, ALSO, don’t knock a university grad from ANYWHERE. Um wait a second…was this guy the only person who hates the olde tyme RTA? It only protects the landlords and never the tenents. Imagine complaining that you had a leaking shower time and time again…then said shower is replaced by the landlord (who didn’t notice the water damage that he had been told about already) then this nicey nice landlord keeps the 750$ deposit because of ‘water damage he was not made aware of’. I now video tape all apartments I move in to because I know when I call the helpline for the RTA they just say there’s nothing they can do to help.
The dude’s right. The Residential Tenancies Act does very little to protect tenants, and gives landlords all the power. He didn’t say anything nasty about Halifax, I even saw the words “fair city”. He’s saying the RTA needs changing, and it does. Everyone chill out.And to “That’s right, that’s the truth.” – Shut up. Try fixing the spelling and grammar mistakes in your post before you start getting all high and mighty. So far, I think your post is the single most close-minded one here. So you’re disgruntled that landlords have the right to ask for applications and references?I lived in New Brunswick during my undergrad years, Nova Scotia for my Masters degree, and am now in Alberta beginning my professional career.In all three of those provinces, I’ve lived as a tenant and have filled out applications complete with references when looking for accomodations.I’m not saying the Residential Tenancies Act is fantastic, in fact I agree that it needs a major overhaul. I had my fair share of landlord issues when I lived in Halifax.However, it is perfectly within the rights of a potential landlord to check out your history to make sure you haven’t been a troublesome tenant for others. If you’ve never rented before, most landlords are willing to accept other types of valid references.If you’ve been a responsible tenant in the past (or a responsible citizen in general if this is a first time tenant experience for you), you should have no issues with your reference check.If that seems to be the problem, maybe you should stop whining to the bitch column and phone your references yourself to find out what they are saying about you.
Guess things are different in Toronto than the rest of Ontario. I’ve lived in Ontario for about 10 years, and when I was apartment hunting recently, all but one of the apartments that I looked at required an application to be filled out, including the name and address of my current/previous landlord.

If you are living here, and have a problem with the RTA, get involved in making change… instead of just bitching
