People need to learn that when you see a dog tied up and their owner is not around you don’t pet the dog!!! You don’t know if that dog is friendly or not!!! Dogs are very territorial animals! When they are tied up they get very protective of themselves and if a stranger approaches them and tries to touch them their main defense mechanism is to bark or bite since they can’t run away! If you do try to pet them please let them sniff your hand first!! Don’t put your hand in their face trying to pet their head, the dog thinks that you’re going to hit them and will try to protect themselves. Also older dogs might have cataracts which blurs their vision!! So the moral of this Bitch is please don’t pet a dog who’s tied up!! Its not worth the risk!! —Concerned owner of an aging dog

How about, just don’t pet other people’s dogs, ever! Solves a lot of problems. I also hate seeing dogs tied up like that…I never understood taking your dog for a walk to the store and leaving him outside. I wouldn’t trust people to leave him alone. I once saw a dog in the summer tied up outside of a BAR! Who the tell brings a dog to a bar or any place to eat/drink and leaves it outside?!!!

Always let the dog sniff your hand, and if you’re going to pet it start under the chin – dogs who don’t know you see it as an act of aggression if you try and pet them on the head, and may react in a negative fashion. In my opinion, I think all children should be taught this at a young age. Many kids (especially those who have a dog at home) will walk up to any dog on the street and can end up getting bitten.

Although I agree with all your comments and much of the post – I have to say that if you have an aggressive dog that you know has issues with biting people and is not good with strangers – maybe you shouldn’t tie them up in a public place and leave them alone. People are not very smart (some – not all)….and children are naive….so maybe if you think your dogs a high risk biting offender then don’t put them in a position where this mistake can occur. I love dogs…when I had 2 I knew that I can tie my retriever up outside anywhere and no one will be hurt – but my American Staff will likely take someone’s arm off.

Some people really don’t know these things OP. Dog owners may think it’s common sense but to someone who doesn’t have regular contact with animals or dogs specifically it’s not. Most of the people doing this are probably not dog owners. They probably wanted to pet the dog in the first place because they aren’t around them much. I don’t disagree with you though, just thought I’d point that out.
kids are the worst for doing that shit. someone’s kid is gonna be eaten by a big fucking dog, one of these days.but the problem falls on the owner’s shoulders her o.p., by leaving said dangerous animal out in plain view, and withen reach of people. part falls on parents who fail to instill in their kids, the dangers of strange animals too.
I was in the off leash part of Point Pleasant with my dog, when we ran into a young family. I called my dog over because the couple had a toddler. Next thing I know, and before I can even hook on his leash. Mummy says, “run run, go pet the doggy”, and that’s exactly what the 3 year old did. Good thing my dog has an excellent disposition.
Guess I’m one of those peope who considers that teaching children, about dogs and other animals, is just common sense.
Dogs are just domesticated wolves, if it’s not part of the pack and appears sick or weak….could be dinner.

I had a most beautiful encounter with a wolf, not too long ago. I will never forget the beauty of this beast. I was in a rest area, where I met this man(also striking) and his wolf cross?both where taking a lap at the water fountain. This dog was HUGE in legs and he had no problem in lapping at the water fountain(adult height) Yet the most striking thing about this animal was his sheer intelligence. One would never question it, as he eyed me up and down…It was a moment in time where I was overwhelmed and stunned by Mother Nature’s Beauty.

uhhh zZz, I think you missed my point. I didn’t mention wolf attacks, I was saying that dogs are/can be dangerous to strangers, especially small children. Dogs, like Wolves, are canines; canines are predators. Small wobbly mammals look like prey to predators.
