Almost every day, my 3 year old Black Lab Koko and I hit up our favourite dog friendly coffee shop on the way to the park. We are always greeted with a smile from the staff and they always give him a treat. Until today…..
Unfortunately there is a crusty dog hating human out there that took it upon themselves to complain to the health inspector about people bringing their pets in for 2 minutes while ordering coffee instead of tethering them outside. When the staff behind the counter informed me, they were just as upset about it as we were. The girl on the cash pointed out the fact that it doesn’t make sense, seeing as some people that come in for coffee wear the same clothes every day and smell like they haven’t showered for a week, but they are still allowed inside and she has to serve them….
Anyway, to the miserable person that ruined our daily routine instead of just staying at home surrounded by your own crustiness or going to another coffee shop, thanks! —Koko & Derek

Darling, little Koko is full of nasty germs of which we do not want. Sound reasonable?
That really sucks Derek and Koko.
Part of being able to fully engage in a city is having the flexibility to go where you want with whom you want. Halifax is a great city with wonderful offerings but the culture is a little quick to react to the voice of the few that are very vocal versus the many that are quiet and too afraid to voice an opinion.
I empathize with your situation as I enjoyed many years in London, England where dogs were welcome just about everywhere, including the pub, coffee shop, buses, and so forth.
I would suggest you take a little time and do some research on the true “health” violations associated with having a dog in a coffee shop. Service dogs are welcome and they are not pre-screened to ensure they are “nasty germ” free.
Good luck and never let the bastards get you down!
People are assholes, and apparently it only takes one asshole to ruin shit for everyone. If germs are what stops you from entering a coffee shop, peoples annoying-ass dirty children, homeless people and old people should be banned from public places, period.
Ooh ooh I have a dog (or a cat or a snake or whatever) and I should be able to take it wherever I want to because I’m entitled. Sorry but unless it is a certified service animal, it has no business being in a restaurant or coffee shop.
As the song goes, “The trouble with normal is it always gets worse”.
You may be a responsible dog owner OB but what if someone else comes along behind you, sees you, and wants to bring their dog in too. But their dog is not well trained and it jumps up on the other customers or tries to grab food or starts a fight with your dog. Not a good idea in a confined space like a coffee shop. Not a good way to run a business.
There may be a few people who hate or fear dogs but most people, like myself, love dogs but hate irresponsible dog owners.
It definitely sounds like the complaining patron has a stick up their backside but maybe they are allergic to dogs? I love dogs and really want to have one in the future when I have a bigger place and more time but there’s a reason a lot of places don’t allow animals inside (such as drug stores) and it is because some people have a medical reaction to them.
It only takes one person to spoil it for everyone.
No food service place can be animal friendly as it’s illegal.
So is smoking weed, GJ, so what’s your point?
Whistle-blower shaming!
