Ok, I know it’s nice to walk side by side with your friends. The thing is; there are certain places where it would be nice if you tried single file for a change. I love the new library; as do many. The stairs are lovely. Please try to embrace the concept of taking those stairs in the new library single file! —old bitcher

Just plow right through. If someone complains, ask: what did you expect me to do – walk on the rail?
If people in Halifax can’t figure out how to STAND to the side on an escalator how can you expect them to figure out how to share stairs when actually walking?
Same thing for the sidewalks…people honestly won’t move…and yah gotta hug the wall.
Honestly? I just plow my old carcass through them like a well-tuned Bobcat tractor. Oh, did one just go over the side? Me bad.
ALLES IN ORDNUNG!
What is the subtext here? I see two, both of which are inter-related. First there is the demand for courtesy, to allow for the presence of others in tight quarters. This precludes such activities as overt sexual interaction or answering Nature’s call on the steps of the library, both of which interfere with the free flow of traffic about the premises.
Coupled with this is the demand for order since, given such tight quarters, courtesy itself may well not be enough. In addition, order is itself a “higher-order concept” since it applies not just to random individual interactions but also to those criteria constitutive of social cohesion in general. In other words, there can be no society coherently conceived without order.
Some societies, of course, embodied order more than others. One thinks, for example, of the Polynesian Islanders just wandering about eating the low-hanging fruit (and no doubt interacting sexually with each other as well) as contrasted with Order as seen in the Third Reich where one could truly say, “Everything is in Order!”

Single file is a mystery to many in this burg. Since the library did not opt for wide stairwells, perhaps due to weight factors, they should have UP and DOWN stairways, like my old high school did. However, they would never be able to police them anyway and some people would be too dim to follow the instructions. After all everyone is the King or Queen these days, it seems.
I was walking along University Ave. yesterday and three girls (17-18teenish) all walking abreast (well actually it was six breasts). Do you think they were going to move? I kept over to my side of the sidewalk and smacked one in the arm because my arms oscillate when walking. This happens too often for me.
I once had words with 3 people (one guy, two women) as they were walking down from Barrington to the waterfront and proceeded to walk 3 across while I had to chug up the road and somehow get through them. I refused to walk around them (i.e. in the street) as I thought they were incrediblely rude to walk like that. I can’t understand how self absorbed some people are….
