Dear university students, university degrees are investments. You choose to invest your money in them and you can choose where to invest. Therefore, get over yourselves and stop marching in the streets thinking that the NS government should be paying more for your investment. News flash—we live in NS… the government has no money. University degrees earn you higher wages and if you can’t get a decent job to pay it off at the end because you took an Arts degree or a Education degree, deal with it. It’s just like any investment—there is some risk associated with it. I’ve been paying my $39,000 student loan for 6 years now and I never once went to the streets to protest because I know it was my decision to go to university. I was also not wearing $300 UGG boots, carrying an IPHONE (I didn’t have a cell phone because I was a student and I couldn’t afford it), and wearing a nice warm fancy goose feathered down jacket when I was in university. Dunno, I have an arts degree and have been fairly well employed since 3 days after receiving it. But – I worked throughout university so that I could graduate without a debt load. It IS possible, you know.
I completely agree OP. No one forces these students to pursue a university education and the debt associated with it. It’s a choice they made. We must all be held accountable for our decisions in life. I also graduated from univ, $23k in debt (thankful to the help of bursaries/scholarships), and it took me 26 months to pay it all off after I secured a well paying job. Again, my education paid off in the end for me. Now, back to Questrade and my tax free investment account.
You’ll notice.. or at least i’ve noticed since i finished university, that for the most part, the only people who bitch about paying for university are people currently IN university. Why? because spend a year or two in the real world and you learn way too fucking quickly that This Is How Shit Works. NOTHING is free. NOBODY is entitled and there are FAR more important places where government money should be going. Find a genius? Yes, his fucking education should be paid for. But most university students are flakes. I mean come ON. The average IQ of the canadian university student is 115. 115! Can you believe that? Trust me, if you’re a genius, you’ll get the funding and the support and the grants and scholarships and attention you deserve. Eventually you WILL be found out. If you have an IQ of 115, you’ll get what you’re worth.
I know that’s a horrible, bitchy thing to say.. but i’m just sick and tired of university students all believing that they are, in some way or another, a great tortured genius when in reality, they’re painfully average, drunk half the time and in no way entitled to a free education past the twelfth grade.
Yeah it would be lovely if it were free for everyone. But the truth is.. 99% of students are no more than one face in a massive sea of many. We can’t afford to invest in every single one of you. Most of you aren’t smart. So you have to work hard. And if you work hard, i PROMISE YOU.. it will pay off and this debt won’t last long. But given the number of students who default on student loans because they can’t even earn back what they spent, it would be complete dumbassery to GIVE them that money with no expectation of ever getting it back in any form.

chipmunk, choice of schooling is determined by the choice of one’s vocation. Generally, surgeons, engineers and the like graduate from universities, trades people and the like from community colleges.
iso-kay, imagine a system like France where state-funded higher education’s tuition fees are minimal, acceptance based on academic achievements mean the smart ones are given priority. Imagine turning out top-notch grads instead of a crop of soon-to-be pros who’s money, not their IQ is the determining factor for atttendance at uni.

One must never, no never, attend university with Sick’s blinkered pragmatic perspective. To do so is, in effect, an oxymoron, a contradiction in terms.

I don’t think this bitch is very fair.
I get pretty good marks in school, and always have. I have parents who have filed for bankruptcy and can’t help me pay for anything. I’m a theatre student so there are very few opportunities for me to get scholarships and I can’t go to college (in this province) for my degree so I rely on my student loans, even though I have summer employment in my field of work. Yet, I’m still living on apples, KD and cans of tuna… I can barely afford to pay my rent let alone my bills. I buy my clothes at Frenchy’s, budget my entertainment money strictly and I don’t go to bars because they’re too expensive. Yes, I have a cell phone, but I don’t have a home phone line because of it, and I’ve never been on a vacation anywhere outside this province.
Long story short, YES – Going to university is my investment, but I should not have to pay off Nova Scotia’s debt or get bitched out for protesting an increase in fees that will force me further into my own debt and take me even longer to pay off.

I’m a 26 year old back in university and what I see is pathetic… I take a 2nd year English Lit class as one of my arts electives and half the class is bitching that they have to actually crack open a dictionary and learn a few new words in order to read Death in Venice. So they paid hundreds of dollars to do what? Sit around and look pretty? There are so many who would have better spent their money in community college first and then worked while they waited for their motivation to catch up with them. People were bitching about my generation being lazy and over-entitled back when I was in high school but kids want everything spoon-fed to them these days.

It’s usually accompanied by “they can’t expect me do that” or “this is bullshit, I’m not doing it”.
I think we put too much emphasis on kids going to school right after uni. I wasn’t 18 yet when I applied for my first student loan. I could have done with a few years to work and live in the real world (which also would have led me to my passions and career interests with less faffing around while paying university tuition). I also think schools should be a little more competitive, I don’t know anybody that graduated from high school with me that applied for university and didn’t get in, though there were some real duds that were applying. I’d like to see a higher calibre of graduates coming out of our universities.
Hugo, it’s almost worse than high school in that they all expect to get all the class notes posted online in powerpoint format, thereby making having gone to the lecture completely pointless since most of the prof’s who do this don’t give any extra information during class.

Here’s a tip for university students: if you can’t afford a degree, for the love of god don’t go to university. Go to community college, you’ll get a job almost right out of school, and if you still want a degree do it then when you a. have your own money and b. know how to manage it responsibly. People always talk about students being poor – but I’m telling you, when I first started working and paying off my loans, then I was poor. I couldn’t afford much, and I didn’t own anything besides a piece of paper. And now I’ve been working in my field for a few years, paying off loans, saving for an RRSP, a wedding and a house – and I have never had less disposable income in my life.
Yup, living the dream… really kids, your education is an investment, and like an investment some are riskier and some are safer. Some pay off earlier and some pay off over time. The way I look at it, community college is safer and pays off faster, but over time university will likely (not always) have a greater payoff – if you can afford the initial investment.

Unfortunately Hali is full of the Ugg wearing, parents paying students… and they seem to be the focus of ur bitch.
But what about us, the students who are here at university because we’re passionate about what we do, and we do it well. The only thing standing between me and school is the cost. I work thoughout school, usually 2-4 mid-full time jobs in the summer, and do whatever else I can to get by. So much of my time and effort already goes into participating fully in my school work, it’s difficult when the rest is consumed by finding some way to pay for the education i’ve dreampt about.
I guess it’s just different when you’re paying for EVERYTHING, rent, tuition, travel, clothing, everything.
WE ARE THE STUDENTS THAT THE RALLY WAS REALLY FOR.
So what if the Ugg boot bitties showed, at least they’re another body aligned with the cause. and really if it means they’re parents don’t need to shell out as much for school, i could care less. at least then I could maybe focus more on my studies and less on money………..
