Keeping with the theme that’s developing: Least we forget the construction crew who felt obligated to not remember the sacrifices of our veterans and Canadian Forces personell by working on Remerbrance Day. The noise started shortly after 7am and the only silence I heard was when I finally put my little guy down for a nap when they went to lunch. With the Legion right accross the street with the Canadian flag at half mast, you might think something is going on huh?? I needed to remember my family members who fell while fighting for my freedom… not your freedom to drill and dig a fucking hole in the ground. —Saddened Sailor’s Wife

But if the city workers don’t get triple time-and-a-half then the terrorists win.>; )
Unless it was emergency repairs it was a truly shitty thing to do. My thanks to you and your husband for your service.
It’s not like it’s the workers’ fault they had to work on a holiday. They were just doing their job as mandated by management.
and of course, they can’t work that early according to the by-law. next time CALL THE COPS (490-5020).
PROHIBITED TIMES:
A – … On a Sunday, Statutory Holiday or Remembrance Day until nine o’clock in the forenoon (9:00 a.m.) and after seven o’clock in the afternoon (7:00 p.m.).
and these guys just work when the boss tells them. If they, like you, don’t know that they can’t work at 7am then someone, like you or the police, need to tell them.
funnygirl you obviously didn’t read the entire by-law…particularly the ‘exemptions ‘
As well as some groups do not have to respect it at all, like employees, contractors or agents of the Municipality, The Government of Canada, or The Province !
Not too forget the Water Commission, NS Power, The Bridge Commission can do what they want when they want to !
Then there is the clause that says that it doesn’t apply to “the emission of sound by any traditional, festive, religious or “other” activity.
Plus anyone else can apply for a permit to start early or go late….& let me finish with if you can in any way claim it is an emergency for any immediate health ,safety or welfare of the inhabitants… the preservation or restoration of property !
So basicly anyone OP, can do what they bloody well want, when they want to
…great by law ‘eh, Doesn’t stop anyone except you ,me & about 4 other people in the HRM ~;)
Not to mention that Rememberance is not a paid holiday in NS.
Work doesn’t stop for some because you miss your hubby, OB.
During the Veteran’s National Day Of Protest Rally held in the parade square a crew doing work on city hall started up their machinery drowning out the speeches being made. These veterans and/or their families have paid the price for their service to their country. These veterans are no longer just our fathers and grandfathers. They are now our sons and daughters too. A little respect would have been nice.
‘
These people were there because their fight still continues. Only this time it’s with the government and country they served who deny them their due. If you value your freedom and if the denial to veterans of due services and pensions offends you, please call your MP to complain. We all love to bitch here about social issues and such, which is great. Bitching to your MP can make a REAL difference in the life of a veteran who desperately needs our support. What better way to thank our vets for the freedom they defend for us all!
Perhaps The Coast is up to the challenge of helping keep this issue on the ‘front lines’ until reforms are made at Veterans Affairs and our veterans are treated with the respect that is their due.
Get over it. People had work to do. Their agendas don’t have to adhere to your opinion or sympathies. They have a job to do like anybody else. You’re talking as if they did it with intention to be jerks and that’s certainly not the case. If they stopped while speeches were going on that would probably set them back an hour to a few hours. An MP isn’t going to do anything about it.
The suggestion to call your MP wasn’t about the noise at a rally, NGF.
It was to get your MP on the right page, i.e. getting changes made at Veteran’s Affair so that veterans get the pensions and services due to them.
Oh, and BTW, the rally lasted just under an hour.
Its funny that the first comment made by Ivan says that “if the city workers don’t get triple time-and-a-half then the terrorists win”. First of all, on a holiday as negotiated by the respective union of which those workers are part, some may get double time and some may get straight time. Second, unless it truly WAS an emergency I know for a FACT (as in first hand) that both the City workers and the Water Commission workers had the day off, aka they didnt make the noise. Its funny how as soon as there is a bitch about construction its all about the city or the commission or whatever, even though as a construction manager myself I CLEARLY notice that 90% of the time, a private contractor is involved. Yes private contractors work on most holidays during the year when I think the workers deserve a break, but on the same hand- If laborers don’t work, they don’t get paid. Simple as that.
Contrary to popular belief, its not one big party at the City or the Water Commission. Just because council is ridiculous and politicians are snakes, doesn’t mean the rest of us don’t do our jobs and try hard to keep the public at minimal inconvenience while still providing ESSENTIAL services.
Phew. there’s a rant for ya.
For once, I agree with NGF.
My bad about the MP thing, OC. Still stand by what I said about work and priorities though. Some things just gots to happen.
I stand corrected. Muchos gracias.
First: Rememberance Day is not a stat holiday.
Second: The OP has a husband in the armed forces, and from what I can gather from the bitch, didn’t even bother to attend the ceremonies in support of said husband.
How to make yourself look like a complete ass.
Triple time and a half. Shit, that isn’t half bad. Meanwhile the rest of us salary joes got the day off to do whatever we pleased. Heck, some of us even took Friday off to make it a long weekend. Didn’t the soldiers fight for our freedom? Our freedom to choose to work on holidays and rake in money.
rememberance day is not about the world grinding to a halt, it’s about respecting the sacrifices of our soldiers, with a national moment of silence, and a yearly marker that says, no you are not forgotten. nothing ruins a moment of silence more than all this, “I am better at remberance day than you” crap thats been turning up, all these bitches on facbook, or on here, or in the paper about al these disresepectfull people. since when was rememberance day about one up man ship?. At 11 am on the 11th by not stoping for a moment These workers were exercising their freedom to be ignorant, which unfortunatley was paid for by the blood of many brave souls during world war one and two, who stood up to exactly the kind of people who would like to burn somone at the stake for not conforming to national protocol.
